When the PAST PARTICIPLE agrees - PASSÉ COMPOSÉ with AVOIR // French conjugation course // Lesson 23

Күн бұрынThe passé composé with avoir doesn't follow the same rules as the one with être (previous lesson). For the past participle to agree in gender and number, the direct object or direct object pronoun has to be placed before the verb.
Another possible way is with the relative pronoun QUE / QU'. In this case, it replaces the direct object, therefore the past participle will agree in gender and number.
The agreement can change the pronunciation depending on the last letter of the past participle. If it's a vowel, the pronunciation won't change, but it will if it's a consonant.

Thank u so much, Dylane! It was really important lesson for understanding the structure of French past tenses! I am a native in Russian, I know English, Spanish, Portuguese - and I didn't see the past participle in feminine or plural form in any of these languages 😂 I think French is a REALLY unique one🙂 The changing form of a past participle shows to me that the details (pronoun and relative pronoun) are important in French culture 🙂❤

Thank you for this video, I was not aware of these past participles agrees in avoir for making passe compose. Just a question - is the same principle followed for the sentences contain also "y" or "en" before the verb?

There are exceptions but it's mainly only direct objects :)

Some do very well with a lesson a day, others need a few days between. I usually don't recommend do that a few a day because like you said, there is a lot to take in :D

Thank you for another great lesson! In the book you use the example “Il nous a appelés”, but if nous is feminine, does it change to appelées? (“J'étais à la maison avec ma sœur quand il nous a appelé(e)s.”)

Madam, a little doubt , off the lesson's topic. Please guide... The liaison is not possible between three consecutive words? "Nous Avons achete" you pronounce only "nuzavon" and then separately achete, is the three word liaison:"nuzavonzashet" not possible ?

Ça dépend si tu tu parles d'un cadeau spécifique ou pas. Si oui, utilise LE, si non, utilise UN
