Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

This is actually an opportunity for J&M. If it’s never been done in the field before this will be a chance to write a repair plan for this issue and it also gives them a manufacturing opportunity to increase reliability. Yes it’s inconvenient at the time but the good that can come from it may prevent it from happening again on future carts.

There’s kids all over this area running everything. I haul silage, corn and sugar beets and there’s a 12 year old running a dozer in the silage pile and giving orders to grown men. It’s the way it is in these parts. I’m not from here, only come for 3 months a year and was shocked the first time I saw a kid in a big machine. They learn young and take over the operation as they grow. Zack is still a young man but he probably has 30 years experience under his belt.

It always amazes me what friction between two moving metal parts can accomplish. The fact that it welded itself together without tearing up something else is also pretty impressive. I can't blame you for not trying to load and use it without the bolt in place though. Shoveling out that full grain cart by hand would be a pretty daunting task if the auger failed.....
@wiserguy7257

Amazing and a bit lucky that the bar bent and the wood cracked instead of something else crucial and expensive on the cart breaking. I think part of the problem is that you didn't curse loudly enough or long enough. In my experience cursing always seemed to help. It's tough to know when to give up on the pulling, pushing and hammering and get the wrenches out, but I think that removing the gearbox and pulling the flighting would have been faster in the end. At least it would have given you room to get a torch or welder on the connection.

If your bending that pry bar with the skid steer..(we have the same one's in the shop they've been there sense the 60s) I think the J&M boys could wait till after corn harvest to come and fix it. 18:04 interesting method of splitting firewood 🤔 you should make sure to only use this firewood on special occasions though

We had the exact thing happen in our last field on our Brent 1194 grain cart! I believe it has two bolts holding the auger sections together though so we were able to finish the last field. But same situation. The guy at the elevator told our truck driver that the last one of our trucks to dump there lost that big bolt.

To add to my list of winter projects, think about the bearings on the auger shafts. If they are going to pull the shafts completely out, if it was me, new bearings would go in. Never put used parts back in 8f you have to remove them.

Put a sheet of expanded metal or a trap magnet to catch things like that bolt or chopper flails. Keep them out of the pit augur. 11:06
