How do you know your chicks are old enough to move out of the brooder? Will they survive the change in environment? Should you have moved them out sooner? Should you wait a little longer? I address all of these questions in today's video.

Hey John. It’s the first of 3 harvest days today at the school in Sagkeeng. 76 of our original 84 birds have made it all the way to the end. Thanks again for your guidance and help. Cheers!

90% survival! Do you know what caused your fatalities?
@michaelthorbourne1723
@michaelthorbourne1723 2 жыл бұрын
The deaths were spread out...mostly aggression of other birds when we were struggling to get them outside into a bigger space due to weather. Our grade 8’s also rescued 2 birds from the flock who became injured along the way; the one with the bum leg wasn’t viable and had to be destroyed, but the one who hurt his wing recovered and moved to a local petting zoo last week. So, 6 deaths before harvest, which we were happy with, and managed to learn from along the way.

On nice weather days our family brings chicks out from their brooder to have playdates in their Suscovich tractor ☺️ Also, I recommend installing the Chicklift wheel system on the back of the tractor. It makes turning the tractor much easier for me.

Personally I think this price is crazy. But it gives you a good idea of what it is- maybe you can find something similar cheaper

Great update John. I’ve looked through all your moving chicks to pasture videos you’ve created through the years, as well as your pasture flock management content, but I have been missing any mention of how birds deal with wet grass I.e. morning and evening dew, as well as wet grass after rains heavy and otherwise. Is there a management technique one should keep in mind to these situations?

In our area gnats are a major problem. If the chicks do not have enough feathers to protect themselves and we do not pay close attention to weather and gnat pressure, it can be very hard on birds. We learned this the hard way!!!

Hey John, thanks for your content. I'm a new subscriber and I have a question for you: I integrated two flocks together. Now, one gets picked on by one of member of flock "A". Other than that, there is no fighting and the one only does it occasionally. Flock "B" stays in the coop and never leaves although they have a run. They stay separate. How long does that go on till they become one flock?

Hi, I just got chicken’s for the first time and they are two weeks old today. The weather is hot so when can I take them outside in a coop?

My cornish cross are exactly 2 weeks old today.....the largest (best guess) 15.7oz....smallest 11.4 again I didn't weigh them all.....does that sound good.....I'm feeding them county organics...whole grain, they're still eating starter ( until week 4)......I do give them some fermented feed 1cup 4 or 5 times a week...great video....I'm hoping to put them out between week 3 & 4 in their tractor...
@Scott-zb6eo
@Scott-zb6eo 2 жыл бұрын
I was not very consistent with recording weights last year, but at week 4, we averaged out to 23.5 oz per bird. They finished at 4lbs average dressed weight. This go around I'm adding a second feeder just so that there are no issues with access, as the largest was over 5.5lbs and the runt of the clutch was only 2.5lbs, and I think it was due to pecking order.

Hey John, I have a question. I live in the suburbs and my city only lets me have 3 chickens on a permit and they rarely give out the permits. How can I convince my council to allow this kind of thing in our backyards? (I have enough backyard btw) Edit: I also want to say that I can’t leave here for another 7 years because of my financial situation. This is why I want to convince them and not leave.

@@rickayers3150 And there is room? Turkeys sold locally are around 16-20lbs, or about 4-5x a chicken. I'd be hesitant to stock them that dense, but I've no first hand experience with turkeys, other than the wild turkey that lives in our bush.

A year ago I built 5 at 300 .00 each. This year 5 cost me 600.00 each. So I milled my own lumber and only used treated 2 x 4 on bottom skid rail and they came in at 250.00 a peace.
