I moved my 26 chicks to my empty 8x8 coop at 2wks(ish). It's often 40°F during the day. Two heat lamps to give a 3-5' quarter circle of appropriate heat....and the rest of the coop is COLD. Usually around 55°-60°F. THEY LOVE IT. They run all about, climbing and flying up to the two diagonal natural branch roosts I left in (high side is about 18"). When they get cold, they go back to the warmth of cuddled chicks and the heat lamp. Just like they would with a hen. They are visibly happier, and I'm 150% certain will be healthier for having the extra room and ability to move about. Betcha $50 they'll be more intelligent and developed when they hit the run, too.

5/19/2021 How did having chickens work out for you? My wife and I are new to this but both grew up under families that had them.

@@shanemarcotte2062 I've enjoyed my chickens thoroughly since my original post and this year (2021), I've added more. The new babies are about 2 1/2 months and I'm enjoying them just as much as my first set of baby chicks. I hope you and your wife will receive just as much enjoyment as I have. 🧡

I put a heater in the coop until they ignore it at night. if the coop is already empty I get them out to the coop as early as 3 weeks with a heat lamp. If there are adult chickens already in the coop I wait until week 8 if there are more adults than juvenile chickens. If there are many more young chickens being added than adults I will do it sooner as the adults get over whelmed and only peck at the ones that come close. At 8 weeks I noticed that the young chickens are not bullied as often or for as long, provided they have a place to run and hide.

I have 3 week olds now and they are almost fully feathered about half and I am waiting to put them out at around 5 weeks old, between 4 and 6 weeks is about right depending on temps, where I am its about 83 90 during the day and 65 73 at night, I would wait at least 5 weeks for temps in the 60s at night or hang a heat lamp for another week or two.

Is that necessary to vaccinate open range chickens and have to follow same vaccation schedule like we often follow on commercial farms?. I really love the way you explain and share your practical knowledge stay blessed and live happily
