Watching the play live I just thought it was an amazing play by Hyde on a pretty decent throw by Jones. Didn't even think about the direction of the pump or whether he should have pumped at all. That's the kind of nuance I really appreciate from this channel.

I really appreciate the detail and clarity of this breakdown. My guess if Brady ran this play, he eyes the route for a split moment as he drops back, then brings his eyes to the over, probably doesn't even pump it unless he needs to turn the safety's hips, then bounces his feet to turn left and drops it 2-3 yards inside the sideline for the TD. Jones ball definitely pulls Agholor back towards the middle a bit, too.

Another example of what makes your channel great - you really do articulate the nuance of QB play well, highlighting things the layman would never realise.

You can even see the safety shifting his legs right after the pump to prepare running in the direction of the route. Nice lesson JT!

What a great channel. I came in thinking it was a great play by the safety (which it was),, learned about the pump fake in the middle, left thinking about the role of the slot defender making it so the slot receiver didn't get a clean release, freeing the safety to not have to pay attention to that side if the field, leading to the interception. Such a great teacher. Also, JT, I don't think you are harsh- this is one of the best channels at stating what is there, instead of trying to sort people into the boxes of "this player is good" and "this player is bad".

The big question is, can he differentiate between man vs zone, and has he gotten past being punked by the Defense.

Imo I don't think the pump affected the play very much because hyde doesn't even react to the pump and doesn't begin running until he sees him throw the ball, plus he was running from behind the receiver so I'm giving almost that credit to the safety.

Great point on pump fakes. This was taught way back when I was in High School (long before you were born). However, I loved Josh Allen in this game. He did what he needed to do and ripped the Pats D. BTW: What the F happened to Dak? Dallas stunk it up.

Question from a football moron: It looks kinda like he is pump faking at the tight end coming across the middle [shoulders seem to indicate short throw], is it possible he was trying to draw the safety forward? Is that still a bad move, even if that was the intent? Obviously the result is what it is but sometimes good concepts have bad results. I appreciate the content and education, thank you.

I’m here because Trey Lance pump faked on the 49ers vs Raiders game. All I could think is why is he pump faking more than a few plays. It didn’t make sense as to why he would do this. Thanks for explaining this to me. I knew I was on to something

Yeah as a Pats fan it's tough to watch. We've invested years and years and years in this veteran and he still pump fakes safeties into easy turnovers, like what is the point of having a great coaching staff combined with veteran qb play if they can't figure out the details? It's sickening. Wait.... what now? Mac is a rookie? Oh my- what if he learns from his mistakes and improves? Could that be weird? Oh well, lot's to consider....

Looks like Macs pumping for the WR that starts in the slot on the left that you are saying the safety is also responsible for??? Wonder if that WR would have been better at holding the safety if he cut across the safeties face sooner, as well as actually beating his man and being considered more of a threat to the safety. Then the safety is stuck in lala land wondering who he should cover. More importantly if Mac actually fades his WR to the sideline, since Agholor gave himself plenty of room with how he ran the route then the safety can't even get there regardless of the pump of not. ...and the pump discussion becomes moot. Agholor beat his man and had him stacked . Would have been different if the CB was in phase and squeezing him out.

If brady played his rookie year he would of looked ten times worse then Mac Jones. Even in his 2nd year he made a lot of errors, there's a reason they call it the tuck game. Brady also imo had a much better offense around him and an astronomically better defense. It's fair to say Mac looks better then rookie Brady.

I know that it was man so he probably shouldnt have pumped regaurdless, but do you think he was trying to pump fake the short crossing route coming over instead of the route he threw to?? Even if that was the case, it still doesn’t make much sense to pump to the same side you are about to throw to.

Wow, that was great play by the defender without drawing a PI, that’s a 1 in 100 type of interception. However, if Bill BetterCheater retires, then I think the GOAD (Greatest Of All Deflators) would come back. Thanks, JT for the deep dive on the improper use of the pump fake, without that, it would have been Mac's best floating pass of the year.
