Bang on! You're smashing it on your KZfaq channel right now! Another point is that when the front arm is internally rotated the supraspinatus is in a fully stretched position, and if you raise the bow in this position, then there is too much strain on the supraspin' which can lead to injury.

Very interesting. This weekend I was shooting 60 and 50 meters and struggling. There was no consistency in my shot such that I was pretty much spraying the target. Earlier in the day, I had been used as a demonstrator for set and release as apparently "Hugh does these quite well" for our beginners class. later on Saturday our coach called me up about something else, but he took the opportunity to tell me that he'd noticed a couple of flaws in my set up. Sunday morning, I went to the range again and he explained what was going wrong. It was all about what I was doing from between what you are calling the maximum bow height and anchor. In other words, the draw and setup were all wrong. I had been thinking about bow arm alignment earlier in the week and had inadvertently created another issue. Anyway, fixing the set/draw/set up issue made a huge difference, it took me from being happy just to get in the red to actually scoring 3 x's in the very next end. Granted, the other three arrows were 2 8's and a 6, but three x's! for me that was massive! Now, maybe if I look at the elbow as well, I can get even more consistency.

Oh, I am type number 2.1 😅 - when I draw, the rotation comes off. I found out that the problem is in a lack of strength because it’s okay with a light bow (difference is 6#). With my working bare bow I still keep position but it’s not so strong and I must make more efforts. But with my assembled bow I lose the connection, and If I try to put the elbow back - I feel tension and pain in my upper trapezius ☹️

I always do the elbow rotation with the bow down, before lifting. I had never thought about shoulder rotation and muscle stress. Probably this may be the cause of some pain that I sometimes have in the bow shoulder.
@mortenjacobsen5673
@mortenjacobsen5673 4 жыл бұрын
Your triceps must withstand the draw weight, its what kreeps the shoulder from compressing, your bow arm is also stronger when working isometric, so that needs to be trained, this way your muscles wil fatique and lactid acid serve as a warning to rest, your bones and ligaments how ever do not and when they report pain damage is beeing Done.

Another awesome video, as always, Ashe! Learning a lot watching these. The one thing I struggle with most, along with elbow rotation, is anchoring. I can never get a consistent comfortable anchor so it changes/evolves constantly - so was wondering if you have any plans to do a video on anchoring at some point? As I'd love to watch this. Keep up the good work man! 😊

Sport tape, put a strip on your hand surface that makes contact with your jaw, and do the same with the jaw, the jo can reduce the surface of the tape whenn your getting more feel, og course the large draw motion need to be memorised and the last move of anchoring reduced to a small hand placment. And getting the pressure right, but the tape Will give you more tactile feedback back and a spotter can look for the tape if you change the contact surface

Very interesting. Because I have big shoulder muscles (and probly some fat, not saying that I am strong, i don't even train...) and people commenting my form saying that my bow shoulder is too high but in fact it just look too high, especially when I do elbow rotation it seems like the normal shoulder muscle movement you described is showing appearance of a high shoulder on me... Because I went to a point that I tried exactly what you said not to do and this really didn't work for me as well. So for now I think my bow arm form is okay according to what you say but still "look" too high. Thanks alot !

Hugely useful, thanks! However I don't think that gravity is a major factor, the angle above vertical is small and the bow isn't that heavy. What would make a big difference is the initial draw angle to vertical. The line of gravitational force is also vertical, but that is just a coincidence :)
@OnlineArcheryAcademy

You have a point! The biggest factor is the draw force line pushing the bow shoulder down as you say :)

I wonder if shoulder impingement is also common amongst archers, i imagine it happening when rotation of elbow happens too early encouraging shoulder internal rotation followed by shoulder flexion 🤔

It is fairly common and you're absolutely right about early rotation increasing the risk.

I tried both, right timing as well as earlier at Set. The latter gave me the feeling of a shoulder too much locked or rigid, making the lift-up less fluid or natural. Ashe, do you confirm these sensations?

You cant Just twist, also need to push so the shoulder is that nutreal posission, then scoop to maintain forward pressure without hyper extending the ball joint of the shoulder lifting with the deltoid
