Omg Thank You SO Much for this video!!!! I started my first vegetable garden recently on my patio… and my tomatoes are thriving and growing so fast, and it’s time for me to transfer and separate them, and I had no clue how to do it or when to do it, having never done it before.. and the other videos I watched about it weren’t very detailed or specific at all… but your video taught me everything I needed to know!! Like for example I had no idea I had to transfer them into damp soil.. if I didn’t watch ur video, I woulda put them into dry soil and then watered it (like I said it’s my first time😅) so you’ve been a huge help with this! I’m watching this before I go to bed so tomorrow morning I’m gonna go do the transfer! Thank you!🫶🏼

I stack 2 containers, or party cups if you're using those. Top one exactly as you've done and the bottom one empty. Kinda gives a false bottom and the plants get tricked into really pushing out roots without being bound. At least in my experience. There's a video about it somewhere on KZfaq. I appreciate the tips though man!

Thank you for those comments. After I do my first transplant, I usually put them back under my lights for another 2-3 weeks. If there is no chance of frost, you could begin to harden them off at this point outside, but I would still keep them inside under lights and give them 4-7 days to acclimate to any transplant shock before I began to harden them off.

@rileysgarden8153

Leslie, I put them back under my lights for 3-4 weeks but I move them under different LED lights that are a little more powerful. You can start to harden them off outside immediately if you don't have a chance of frost and them put them back under your lights until they're ready to go out to their final home in the garden. I did a video a few weeks ago about leggy seedlings that fully explains my seed starting / light setup.

I used to. Now, after I up-pot them, I put them under two 200 watt LED grow lights for 2-3 weeks before I move them outside. I have found that these lights are powerful enough that my tomato plants no longer needed to be hardened off. Before I started using those lights, I did harden off my tomato plants before I moved them to their final home in my garden but I let them grow for 2-3 more weeks inside before I hardened them off.

I like to use a small offset spatula ~1 inch wide. I stick it in the 3” pot and move it sideways to make a 1”X1” square hole then I can use the same spatula to slip into the side of the 6 pack and slip the plant out and drop it in the 1X1 hole. I plant 2 seeds in each cell of my 6 pack, but I thin by cutting the weaker of the 2 plants…always difficult but easier to handle a single plant, and you get to choose the stronger plant which may help make stronger plants.
