Help me out, here. Are these guys trying to find out how much power their expensive cars develop at rpms well past the red line, or are they trying to find out how long their expensive engines last at rpms well past the red line?

Most keep under the redline, they are trying to find out how much peak hp they can make. By adjusting how much fuel and air can fit in the combustion chamber. Sometimes also controlling boost pressure so if they get it wrong engine goes boom.
