Boxing is a sport where even in the fights between equal opponents there is always the favorite and the underdog. But fights between equal opponents are a rare occasion and in most cases the favorite is much stronger than the underdog. The outcome of such fights is often predictable before the start and the only question is how exactly the favorite will win. But in boxing one punch can dramatically change the whole situation and today we'll remember the fights in which big underdogs beat the favorites by spectacular knockout.

Corrie Sanders is a hero in my eyes because on 22 September 2012, Sanders was fatally shot in an armed robbery at a restaurant called Thatch Haven in Brits, South Africa, where a function was being held for his nephew's 21st birthday. He had been near the entrance of the restaurant talking to his 15-year-old daughter Marinique and a cousin when three robbers entered firing their guns. Sanders had used his body to shield his daughter from oncoming bullets and then, while bleeding from bullet wounds in his right arm and stomach, pulled her to the ground and whispered for her to pretend to be dead. Sanders was taken to a hospital in Pretoria, where he died in the early hours of 23 September 2012 of his wounds.

You're not wrong but that's not really how things were. The 'odds' were utterly insane and far more a reflection on betting trends and disinterest and not what boxing people themselves would know and predict. Buster Douglas was well known to be a VERY GOOD fighter, Top 5 and it might surprise people but writers picked him as one of the few fighters who COULD beat Tyson. The knock against him winning was that Douglas was a little infamous for slacking, not trying, lacking motivation, coming into even bigger fights flabby and basically an 'Underachiever'. Some might have been tipped off and changed predictions if the noticed Buster showed up at a weigh-in looking shockingly strong and fit. It seems that during camp hew as devastated by the early death of his mother but rather than slack and give up went on a massive mission tribute to show his mom proud sort of thing. an in shape Douglas was a very close competitor to Tyson. Not an huge underdog. an In-shape Douglas, and, its more than that too because Douglas didn't just put on an in-shape Douglas fight but one of the greatest heavyweight performances ever seen. He is absolutely astonishing in that bout against and iron Tyson too. So, really, you're not wrong because, given the expectation of a flabby unmotivated Douglas - that was an incredible underdog comeback that started in that gym and training camp and ramped up to be better than ever.

The person who put this together is incorrect about Tyson. He has prepared for a very different kind of fighter than James Douglas Jr. At the last minute his opponent pulled out or wasn't' able to fight and James Douglas Jr. was a replacement, which means he was the alt, and was preparing for Tyson.

I loved this video but calling Ali an underdog is a joke. He was one of the best boxers in the world at the time and only got beaten once by a boxer whose entire style was Ali's kryptonite. Ali being an outboxer who specialized in long range fighting, counter punching, and using his endurance and precise punches to whittle away at his opponents but Frasier had an almost unbeatable chin, could close the distance, and had an equal endurance and also specialized in whittling his enemies down. Foreman meanwhile was weak to Alis style since he was fairly slow, left himself open, and rarely if ever had to go the distance so he didnt have great endurance and the tight being in a hot arena didnt help. Even with his defeat of Frasier and Norton Foreman didnt have that big an edge over Ali, 2 champions entering a ring rarely have that large a skill gap. It's hard to find reliable odds from the time, I've heard numbers of 6:1, 32:1, or even 49:1 all in Foremans favor but rarely any evidence for those claims or even sources beyond different forums citing one another or people citing numbers they remember hearing.

Ali was indeed the decided underdog, and I remember the build-up to the fight firsthand. Also, you said that before the fight with Foreman Ali had "only got beaten once", but both Frazier and Norton had beaten Ali beforehand.

OK this pissses me off. Tyson was in EXCELLENT SHAPE vs Douglas. In fact, its one of the most impressive 10 rounds of endurance ever seen, Tyson was IRON in that. EFF OFF with insulting him and 'he didn't train' and was 'woefuly out of shape' eff off with that.
@addisonjudah
@addisonjudah Ай бұрын
it was a great fight. Douglas was more in shape and determined than most other fights hed ever been in. Tyson was of course also in shape but Douglas was a last minute replacement and Tyson wasnt prepared for him as much as he could have been If anything, id say that Tyson was more used to knocking out opponents early (if I remember right before this Tyson had never gone against the 5th round). so his endurance wasnt as good as later in his boxing career and thats probably what cost him in the end
@topsuperseven7910
@topsuperseven7910 Ай бұрын
@@addisonjudah the only thing escaping my memory as Douglas being a last minute replacement. As far as I know, Douglas was the mandatory contender and there was a good amount of time to train. Of course, you'd have the equal advantage/disadvantage if both are give a short surprise time to prepare for each other. i strongly disagree with you on Tyson's endurance on that night. I"d say that was absolutely extraordinary endurance. Just stunning the Tyson would not stop and that was a very fast paced fight (by HW standards) and Tyson, 10 rounds of that actually gets back up and shoves his mouthpiece in wanting to go back out and keep fighting. ive never seen Tyson (or nearly any other heavyweight) that endurant.
@addisonjudah

@@topsuperseven7910 I went and did some research and I was wrong, Douglas wasn’t a last minute contender, sorry about that. I think endurance was the wrong word for me to use, it wasn’t that he was tired out but more that he just wasn’t used to fights going that deep
