The raids were true ...but there was also honest trade. Many of the Vikings, settled with family in the raided 'territories' and immersed themselves into those societies. Agriculture was a large motivator for the raids, as Scandinavian land was scarce and the weather was better suited to raising livestock, than growing food 😉 but yes, Roskilde Viking Museum will tell you this and more! hello from still chilly Denmark 🌸❄

Fun fact: In the Viking villages people weren't allowed to carry arms/weapons, they were kept in an armory to prevent violence. And only were used when the chief ordered it.

Regarding Vikings there is this Popular misunderstanding that Raiding(Plunder,Murder and Rape for fun /monetary gains) was all they did. While it is true that the whole culture was a Warrior like culture. The majority of Vikings was not "Vikings/Raiders" they where Farmers, Merchants, Artisans, Explorers And raiders. The problem in the Viking age was that too many was born, so the wealth that you could distribute would be less and less. so in order to balance that out they ventured out in to the world most often as Merchants. But they saw a world with riches and when you are raised in a Warrior culture then it doesn't take much to imagine that they would trade when they could but would Raid to fill up their coffers even more before having to go home. At some point some of these Viking lords got so rich they could afford mounting invasions where they could move some of their surplus population, and give them the chance to actually become more than what they where. Y ou have to remember it was imperative for the Vikings that no matter where you started in life you should be able to make your own name for yourself on your own ability. it is also why there are examples of chieftains that actually started out life as a "Thrall/Træl" which in nature is almost the same as a slave Except you can advance if you show an ability beyond the work of a "Thrall". Now you have a little background for when you go to the Viking museum in Roskilde, Notice the big difference in Viking ships there they where build with all the different purposes in mind as I've referred to in the beginning

What is difficult to take in is that all writting stories about the Vikings are done by their enemies. Snorri Sturluson and Saxo Grammaticus wrote about the vikings but 150 years later. What we dont have is Vikings writing about Vikings. I am sure if they did those stories would be as biased as the stories of their enemies

For sure, for sure. Luckily, we can look between the lines for much of the context, showing some remarkable undeniable events. Like how all of Sicily, almost up to Rome, was under the control of a Norse, how counties all the way from France to the Baltics suddenly have Norse rulers, and leftover - but now mostly extinct - Norse languages in The Hebrides, Orkney and even further in, as well as Norse place names in all of Britain. And of course knowledge about this people as far east as India or beyond. Muslim accounts are for example a mix of respectful but at the same time manipulative recess, at the lack of better words - written from a point of view where you are victim of massive losses to someone whom you have no chance of retaliating against. It seems like defeats were only acknowledged when they got too large to ignore, then they were praised almost, to build a tale of their own legend. Generally though, the Vikings and the Islamic world were trade "partners", with exceptions here and there. Vikings traded as far as Cairo and beyond, being there in person. That's also probably how word got around, as the Middle East would get visitors from other directions, too. There were no Suez canal at this point, although further Viking would had been possible but maybe lacking incentive. India was not particularly rich at this time, not in the same way. Neither was China or anything in the Spice Isles nor Japan. Persia was, though. As well as Oman I think?

You should check out the story of Sigurd I or Sigurd Jorsalfare. The story is almost funny in how ridiculous it is but it did happen. Now, this was shortly after Christianisation... but you can consider him one of the last Vikings. Basically the guy is a Norwegian king, sets out on a wild ride west and through the Mediterranean, doing crazy stuff along the way, before ending up in the Middle East, where he helps Baldwin I and captures a couple of cities, before leaving again through Miklagard, donating all his ships to the Byzantium Emperor before returning home over _land._

Been living in Sweden for past 7 years though. So maybe its something new or maybe its just something for some specific region of Finland. But if the sender gave you instruction follow them. :)

Our ancestors might do trade instead of raid if opponents were to to tuff like Mikkelsborg (Konstantinoble). Konstantinoble even hired the vikings as elitetroops in the emperors guard. We call them jomsvikings, Harald Hardrada was a jomsviking before he tried conquer England.

Scandinavians, Scandinavians are constantly called Vikings Scandinavians. What is depicted in the video are mainly Danes, possibly a small element of Norwegians, perhaps an even smaller part of Swedes. The Swedes went on their Viking voyages mostly east. We river. Through Russia, Ukraine down to the eastern Mediterranean.
@Jonsson474
@Jonsson474 2 жыл бұрын
Swedes went all over europé and not just to the east. That’s a common misconception. All over central Sweden, Svealand, there are thousands rune stones, many telling the story about travels to Central Europe and England. Walking distance from where I live in Sweden there is for example a rune stone telling the story about the swede Sigvid Englandsfararen or Sigvid the England traveler. Close to where I live was also where Bjorn Ironsides or Björn Järnsida is buried as he was the first king of the Munsö dynasty. I’ve recently been to Bråvalla in the region of Östergötland (land of the east Geates) in Sweden, where the Geates came from. This is where Sigurd Ring was king and where he in the battle of Bråvalla United Geates with Geates from the west. He was also the father of Ragnar Lodbrok, who was born in my home town Uppsala and later became Earl in Denmark. Well you know the rest. Not far from where I live in Svealand (land of the swedes) is where Bjorn Ironsides or Björn Järnsida as we call him, is buried. He was born in Denmark but was the king of the swedes and the geates. There is also the misconception about swedes, Danes and Norwegians. They were tribes with several different rulers, located in areas that isn’t the borders of the countries of today and they don’t have much to do with the modern Scandinavian nations except for the names, the history and roughly the region of where they lived. The borders were not the same. So in todays Denmark were the Dane’s and a bunch of other tribes. They gave the name to todays Denmark. In todays Sweden were also Danes in the south, Geates in south central Sweden, Gutes on the island of Gotland and swedes in central Sweden. The swedes gave name to todays Sweden but the borders are actually made up of the areas where several different tribes lived. In todays Norway were mainly Geats and Norwegians. The latter giving name to todays Norway. It’s very much an oversimplification to say that Swedish, Norwegian and danish viking did different things. They were pretty much all over the place. Perhaps a myth created during the nationalist movements in the late 19th century. That’s also when Viking myth and history became popular. But the stories told back then were not always so accurate. Today we know more through science. Also remember that the Icelandic Viking sagas were written several hundred years after the events so things changed over time. They can’t be seen as accurate sources of information but they can give you a hint and tell some fantastic stories. Not even the records created in Southern Europe are accurate since either vikings were described as monsters since they threatened the power of the church and rulers and many records were written by people who had never even seen someone from Scandinavia.

The Nordics were traders and farmers. It is one of our best views into the forming of civilisation. The first few trading posts gets formed and the strongest person defends it. Bad harvests leads to migration waves and slowly the strong men at the trade posts conquer the other trade posts and require protection money, so they keep growing in power. More bad harvests leads to people seeking out more and better land, and some take the trip out to the foreign trade posts they had previously traded with on "raids". The so called raids happened every 20-30 years until parts on England gets a more permanent settlement and later Normandy. Financial growth through more trade with the German lands and the Baltics leads to the beneficial conversion to Christianity and thus raids are both less beneficial and starts being looked down upon as a sin. What really sets the Vikings apart is that they raided during a time of great crisis in Central Europe, and they would develop a significant trauma from it.

We watch "what the Vikings did" from the perspective of our times. I find it very hard to believe that we can grasp the mindset of those times and the folks involved. Just think of what today is called intelligence gathering. What would that have been like in those times? Rumors, is a word that comes to my mind. The Vikings seems to me to have been very practical folks. Should we attack? Should we leave? Should we trade? Or all three, in that order? I also don´t think we should forget the Viking beliefs. Today I guess they would be called true extremists. Even if I fall in battle, it is great! I will come to Valhalla, eat and feast with some great buddies. It is hard to fight anyone that is prepared to die for their beliefs. Add to that, the "what if" my prospects around where I grew up are not so great? I don´t have any land, all of it is taken. I have very little money but I see some that are very rich. And they got it from - looting. A raid sounds quite attractive now, right? Especially that if I live or die doesn´t really matter, I will "get rich" anyways.

Your trip is probably already planned out. But if you do have a chance, go to Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus. Best ancient history museum in Northern Europe by far. Aside from the regular exhibition of iron age Denmark and upwards to middle ages, they currently have a really nice display of the Rus vikings. The vikings that founded Kyiv. Yes, that Kyiv in Ukraine and the entire Rus viking empire in Ukraine. Moesgaard Museum: www.moesgaardmuseum.dk/en/ If you do come, let me know. I'm close by and would love to give you a tour of the museum and the surrounding Viking landscape and show you Aarhus, which dates all the way back to the Iron age.

It could be good to learn more about the historical context of the Viking raids. The Vikings were brutal in their raiding activity, but they were also surrounded by brutality. Read for example about Charlemagne and his campaigns to the north before the Viking age started. I am not telling you to take sides or justify one over another, but it is also not fair to pretend like one side were so bad and the other so pure. Only if you imagine that Charlemagne were a soldier of God can you imagine that all he did was right, while all the Vikings did were wrong. Charlemagne bulit an empire, and from the empires point of view everything they did were justified religiously.

The vikings believed in luck and that each person had a certain amount of luck. A person who find many riches had good luck and so people would follow him, at least until his luck changed. Viking culture changes, but it is slowly. The introduction of christianity doesn’t change it that much, because christianity in Scandinavia is a slightly more violent christianity. Archbishop Abselon was known for being such a devoted christian that he would spill no human blood. Thus he never fought with spear or sword on the battlefield, but only mace. Christianity just changes were the raid happens and they get bigger and more organized. The next big scandinavian raid on Spain will be during the Norweigen Crusade, when christian norweigens lead by the norweigen king raided through the medieterranean sea on their way to the holy land. It is so big that it destroyes any fleet send out to stop them and several well defended muslim strongholds are destroyed. Denmark and Sweden would have their nordic crusades where they raided and conquered the non-catholic countries around the baltic sea. I guess that is where the change slowly happens. The bigger and more well organised the armies are. The easier it becomes to just flat out conquere the land instead of just raiding. Anyway. bryson you should really watch some of the videoes made by notjustbikes. Especially about why suburbs are a ponzi scheme. They explain some of the economics flaws that are in the way americans do cities at the movement and why there is not enough money to repair the infrastructure. Everyone I know who have seen them have found them pretty mindblowing.

Yes!!!!, before the Viking attack's it was just like living in garden of Eden in the British Isle and around Christianize Europe, for there were no conflicts war rape murders slaves and capture of people between states and regions and between princes and kings in the new true Christian world before the Vikings enters the European history, I can take a oath on that the Christian world has beaten the Viking's with light years when it comes to victim in the previously mentioned crimes against humanity in war and conflicts around Europe, and did anyone show them the way of human brutality it was the ancient world with Empire states as Rome Persia Greece Egypt and others who had millions of victims on their conscience but they belonged to so-called civilized world and not the barbarians/pagan world, the Vikings did the same on a much much smaller scale over a thousand years later, but it is probably easier to accuse a Nordic small pagan culture than to take responsibility for their own crimes which were so much greater for the Christian church in Europe. I think the modern term for this is Whitewashing.

I'm sorry, but I break out in hives when I watch "history documentaries" like that one. History is so interesting in itself, why would they need to exaggerate and tell a fabel with that over the top dramatization? "Uhhhhnwilling wives", hehehe, women in the viking culture could get a divorce. Such a rookie mistake. And on top of that, there are written records that the British women prefered to have sex with Vikings, as they actually washed themselves. Yet today, the viking washing day are present in the form of the name Lördag that are our word for Saturday. The old norse word is løghardagher, løgh means wash. So I guess they didn't just rape women as the narrator tried to make it seem? Christian women at the time were treated far worse by their own cultures men. Oh, and why the Vikings in Norway and Denmark started to colonize Britain etc was due to a lack of arable land.
