@@alyccaeve I'm pinoy making $250k+ bonuses a year today telling white people what to do and firing them too if they underperform. I can't relate to people who choose to be ignorant about the opportunities in America. That is why Asian Indians who have darker skin than Filipinos are the number one earning group in America even exceeding Whites. Pursue success or believe you are oppressed.

This short is not really about dancing. It's more about not letting fear dictate our life. To every parent out there, never discourage your child, always lift them up to not let fear dictate their life. That's probably the real lesson granpa wanted to give to his apo.

It's so painful. Having to give up on your dreams, and living only with regrets until the end of your time. It was so easy how the spark of his love for dancing started again, just like how easy it was for him to realize he's already at the end of his journey. All that wasted time. And all he could do now was pass down to the next generation his regrets, hoping they'll never be like him. Mga _"Pamana"_ ni lolo. I hope Michael learns to love dancing.

Manongs were Filipino migrants who set precedence for a lot of farm labor union movements in the US. These are Filipino American stories as well. This binary and inflexible thinking is why the diaspora doesn't know our histories.

@YoBoyA! true. What I am saying is they can be 'both' as opposed to 'only'. There is a critique against the diaspora about not knowing our history yet u saw comments attempting to 'correct' me when the history of the Manongs can be both Filipino and FilAm history. Bc of a change in immigration policies, some of the Manongs didn't make it back home and this is not taught in US history. They had to make roots here w/ some of there descendants very much around. We have to rely on ea other to teach our histories bc of the constant erasure. Dir. Moore has done a beautiful job creating a convo piece.

I really love what the director did in the first act where he basically didn't use an audio (except for the music and environmental audio), avoiding dialogue as much as possible, for its entirety - showing that the entire sequence was a memory. Amazing directing, cinematography, sound engineering... an amazing cast - one of the best casting I have seen! I would have watched this as a whole feature film in the cinemas, really!

Excellent work from story, editing and vision. Us filipinos turn what seems as daily mundane work into dance to enliven the task, from planting or harvesting rice to gathering or harvesting grocery carts at a parking lot. If you ever dreamed of becoming a dancer yes never give up, the spirit of dance is always with you. It's just waiting to be harvested

I think the era was stretched for dramatic purposes. If Lolo and Lola first came to America in the mid-1940s, they would have been 110+ years old by 2023. If Lolo and Lola were around 80+ by 2023 which is what it seems on the film, they would have ideally come to America in the 70's, right around the rock 'n roll years and disco era which has its own dance history altogether.

Yes, this is also what I’ve been thinking early on while watching. I just took comfort in knowing that although the short movie is inspired from experiences of Filipinos in the US, it’s still a work of fiction, and they have the right to “artistic license”.
