They let the spanish flu burn through the population. The world population is a lot larger now compared to the time when spanish flu was around and so is the percentage of susceptible people. Covid is lot newer and scientists are still trying to understand its behavior. It can be controlled only if everyone follows the protocol and exercises caution. Vaccines have to be rolled out at a quick pace and we are still uncertain how long it will give people protection. It won't come to an end by this year and that's the reality

I still do my best to limit spread of covid though. As I am frequently in contact with people who are at risk.
