I know this quote from him - but its a contradiction in itself. By definition a genius is not only someone who is ''smart'' , but also someone who is excessive about a hobby or job. In that sense also Michelangelo was a genius. A genius in art. Genius is as far i understand the word: always connected with the ''thing'' a man does. The genius does that ''thing'' extraordinary good. So.. in case of Fischer, there is no genius, without his chess. Sure he maybe was intelligent too although it seems that there are parts of him which didnt seem very smart. One thing is for sure: he wasnt a genius in a sense, that he made the world a better place (which scientists definetely do all the time .. not always with big leaps, but they do).

In Fischer's era, chess engine already existed. It was the whole Soviet team. They all have the records, the opening theories, worked as one to solve a single problem, worked as one to support their dog. But Fischer only had a small circle. He worked mostly by himself. That's the terrifying part of his dominance.

I personally think Bobby Fischer is the greatest of all time. All the odds were stacked against him. All the Soviets were receiving steady paychecks for playing chess. The Soviet top GMs were colluding. The whole soviet machine was behind their top players. Entire team of GMs decyphering Fischer's every game during his career. And I'm sure this all is just the tip of the iceberg. Fischer didn't have a team. He didn't get paychecks from government. Just he alone. Why didn't he defend his title? Because the rules were stacked against him. He had a very simple request: if there is a draw during title defense, the title should stay with the champion. For example in MMA - Valentina Shevchenko just had a draw against Grasso. Grasso is the current champion. Because the fight was a draw, Grasso kept her title. What Bobby requested was only fair. But it was not granted. So he refused to defend.

@@GunnarGrahn I forgot to mention what the actual rules were. The rules were, that if the matches were a draw, then the challenger would get the title - giving the challenger the advantage of being able to play for a draw. Of course the modern system of tiebreak matches is probably the most fair for all parties. And I'm sure that if the Russians (or whoever was behind the system) offered Fischer the modern system as a compromise, he would have agreed.

Have you ever been around chess players? Let me put it like this. The majority of them have demon desires but lack the physicality needed to be considered tough. If they were 6ft 3 and 260lbs, most of them would be in prison. Look at Niemann. His face would turn milk sour. Look how they all brag about dominating, breaking egos, controlling another's mind. I was playing a tournament in my College and I was competing for 2nd position, I was just sitting on my chair and waiting for my opponent when he came looking at me and laughing with his friends about me. He told me "sorry bro for defeating you" and laughed at me before even starting the game and I was just furious that he is underestimating me but then I mated him in 13 moves..... he's face🤌🤌it was satisfying to see his ego shatter into a million pieces and his face turning sad because of a sudden checkmate.... @@haventsleptyet What ego? If Bobby doesn't believe in Psychology, that's a made-up word. If Bobby just plays 'Good moves' as he said in his quote, that should be all he sees. This only stands if you take his words literally, which makes it funnier, which was my only purpose here, 6 people found it funny. Sure, if we look into the moment he says it, his tone and context would clear this up, but it would probably not be much fun in this way. sorry about the long read... Before you read next, I'm in no way a feminist, of any version or kind, I stay away from that thing... In another clip of Fischer, I think he was in his 20s,[maybe even less than 20] he was playing down women, not only in chess but also in most fields, and that they should be in the house kitchen etc. which would be acceptable In the media at the time. But in another interview, which i think was from his 30s maybe, he was supporting women in chess like "Yeah, I always believed in them, I always welcome a game with women, I just don't get the chance to play as much" Something along these lines. I believe these things he says, these quotes, are just words that bring praise and are apt for the time period. He's charismatic, to say the least, and his words are deep in some sense, but the person himself? or at least the person he used to be at the time he said them? I don't believe so. But again all this only stands if we knew the person at the time. Maybe he came across a few female players at the bar and library who impressed him and changed his opinion.

Don't judge a ficher by its capability to climb in to a tree.. Mr ficher is a great role model of succes.

He was a good player but he never maintained his hold on the game. If you look at Carlsen or kasparov, they had a lot more analysis gone into defeating them yet they stayed at the top. While fischer gave up when his childish demands weren't met.
