The first time my Salvadoran suegrita came to stay with us, I asked her in the store if there was anything special she wanted me to buy for breakfast. She asked for "kwah-cair," a wonderful hot dish that they used to serve the kids in the American hospital she worked for in Honduras in her late teens. She spotted the logo and pointed at it: QUAKER oatmeal.

ROTFLMAO!!! I had an Irish gran who spoke with a brogue. Many times when we visited as kids, she would tell us to try new things and not be such "schtikndameds" which I thought for years was some Irish expression....I was almost an adult when I realized it was her effort at pronouncing "sticks in the mud"...she was speaking English and I couldn't tell! She also used to serve us kids hot tea and Irish sausage. One day I told my mom I missed eating Grandma O'D's Irish sausage, and my mom (whose own mom was Dutch) said, "Oh fer cryin' out loud, there's no such thing as Irish sausage...she was cooking Jimmy Dean sausage! She liked to call everything she made 'Irish'!"
