I really liked the characters and how it shows how narcissistic/manipulative and ignorant people act. However, I found myself struggling with the plot. I felt like it had a lot of build up just to come to nothing in my opinion.

What is the issue in a character being unlikable anyway? People are "unlikable" in real life if we should ever use that adjective anyway. Pfff, it's such a dumb and shallow criticism.
@lunavioleta0012 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If the point is that the characters are unlikeable or not great people, how can you criticize it for it? If you don't like unlikeable characters as the main characters, that's a you problem, not a fault of the movie.
@briannacooper65802 жыл бұрын
Unlikeable characters aren’t an issue. Poorly-written unlikeable characters are an issue.
@pb.j.17532 жыл бұрын
I don’t think these characters are unlikeable. They are just one dimensional and not interestingly written.
@briannacooper65802 жыл бұрын
@@pb.j.1753 I agree. Julianne did well with what was written but her character has no personality outside of working at the shelter. Ziggy was annoying and his entire subplot about his crush on the girl at his school has been done hundreds of times in hundreds of different ways and this film doesn’t make it new or interesting in any way.
@Gemnist982 жыл бұрын
Having seen the movie, they are unlikable for far too long. I don’t mind characters being assholes as long as the script deliberately portrays them in the wrong, which this movie does by having the objects of their affection eventually calling them out on their bullshit. The problem is, when you get to that part, there’s less than ten minutes left, so it essentially just amounts to the characters meeting up and staring at each other. In other words, the third act is less than ten minutes long, not only making the resolution feel cliche but also incredibly hollow and underdeveloped.

I liked parts of it. The female interest looked like it was going somewhere. The irony was she first encouraged the guy to use his platform for world issues and stuff. When he finally succeeds in that, she dunks him for telling her friends. The message being its ok to debate and argue about issues but actually succeeding and telling it to others is a big no no. :P
@waji393021 күн бұрын
I think you missed the point, he used her poem without telling her and then raved about it like he was doing gods work all the while exploiting the people who were listening and the people who the poem was about for his own monetary gain, I think it went over your head
@geopadilla145521 күн бұрын
@@waji3930 Not really. He had a bigger platform and the monetary value it brought proved people appreciated the message of the song. Sure he was immature since he still equates success with monetary gains instead of just putting out good meaningful messages (though a lot of artists do appreciate monetary gains). But the girl also missed the point that there must be something in his platform worth looking into. She was always ranting out with her friends. When it came to the poem recital, she was just preaching to the choir. I dont know if finding out that there are other people outside her group that liked the message of the poem shocked her.

I saw the second screening yesterday. Julianne’s performance was quite compelling, especially her emotional restraint. I thought the other characters, including Ziggy-who feels more like a caricature-were too one-dimensional to be interesting. The plot meanders all the way through with awkward, tense moments that somehow arrive at a big emotional climax that feels unearned and inorganic. I’m a fan of Eisenberg and enjoyed the unique sense of humor he gives to the tone of the film but the writing and direction otherwise fall flat for me. I like his style of filmmaking though and would be interested in seeing his next feature. 6/10 for me.
