There are pragmatic choices and emotional choices when new car shopping and buying a Giulia is certainly the latter. Will it be Lexus reliable? No. Have the polish of a BMW or Mercedes? Not this time around. But it does have personality in spades and that's enough of a reason to put the Giulia on your lease-shopping list for sure.

Ferrari go for races and they have them fixed as well. It's good to always know where they are in every situation. In the past it wasn't a problem to take the hand out and reach the central stick. ...now suddenly it is a problem to reach them behind the wheel? I don't think so.

I think the best option is to get a Giulia in the new Estrema trim which includes the LSD and adaptive suspension found in the Quad (as well as some of the carbon bits), and then throwing in a piggyback tune unit like the JB4. This should get you up to 320+ HP and your 0-60 time in the AWD version should be mid 4s. This gets you much closer to the M340i, matches the S4/S5 and matches the C43. All in a car that drives much better than any of them, looks much prettier and is much more unique.

So Alex...glad to see you're enamored with Alfa ...and that you rightly point out how even the standard 2 Liter Giulia is miles better than the competition but there's an important design philosophy that exists with Alfa vs the Germans.... Alfa designed the Quad version first and then began to subtly take components away to arrive at the base Giulia model....therefore they share many components...Chassis, Carbon fiber drive shaft, suspension geometry (although Quad has more exotic materials), Steering rack (by far the best part of these cars), etc, etc....whereas the Germans take a base model 3 / 4 series or "C" class or A 4 and then start throwing performance stuff at them....Kind of like LIPSTICK ON A PIG !!! FORZA ALFA BABY !!! THE KING IS BACK !!!

Every video I ever watch on the Giulia, the comments are all basically the same: "I love it", "most underrated car", etc etc, which is really all anyone needs on this car. Reliability is irrelevant on the Alfa's anyways-not only is it drastically better from the Alfa's of old, but as was mentioned in the video, almost every Alfa will be leased anyways, and if you get a pre owned one it'll most likely be a CPO. Also continuing to harp on the infotainement hiccups from the previous years is doing the car a disservice. It's better, now move on. If you're looking at a vehicle in this class and are even a slight driving enthusiast, not planning on putting this on your test drive list is a "pity". I always say the same thing: "Drive the car and you'll fall in love." The lease on my current car is up this time next year and you'll see me in a 2021 Giulia TI Sport at that time. No if's, and's, or but's about it.

Sad verse here. When you are to buy such car, the first question is: "Where I can get one?" and when you already have one, there is the second question that stops you is: "Who will fix my car and where is spare parts coming from?". These two a very tightly connected to each other. Going to the selling/servicing place for a day (or longer?) is no fun. Waiting for a spare part for 2 weeks is no fun either.

@@aureol40012 I am completely agree with you here. There is no challenge to drive ~100 miles to service a car which you love to drive. This is something that "you got'a do what-cha got'a go" thing if a human being is already had a taste of being inside such a car and loves it. Alas, this is not a huge group of people and manufacturer prospers when they sell a lot of cars. And sale numbers increase. This will not happen if new customers will not come along. And among new clients - there is ones that is still considering their pros and cons while making a decision.

Fun fact about weird exhaust changes with bigger vehicles despite the engine being the same. The Challenger was supposed to be the only FCA vehicle that had over 300hp with the pentastar V6 at 305hp (the rest being 285-300hp), but the Ram 1500 also has a 305hp V6 simply because of a more efficient exhaust because theres way more room under that hood. No other intake trickery or turning was needed like the Challenger has. Simply having more room under the hood for more efficient designs can lead to healthy power bumps. This is also why the RAM 1500 has the highest HP 5.7 hemi, and it would likely have more power in the 6.4 if that ever went under the hood of a 1500.

I've been shopping for a new (or CPO) sports sedan for a couple months. I've driven a new G70 2.0L Sport with 6-speed manual, a few 2017-2019 C300s, and an older and newer 330i x-Drive. Two weeks ago I almost bought a CPO 2019 330i, a car I really liked. But I held off, reluctant to give up my ND1 Miata. I thought I'd probably just keep my car one more summer and sell or trade it for a sports sedan this fall. Then last weekend my wife and I drove a new 2020 Giulia Ti AWD and loved it. I've liked the styling of the Giulia since it debuted, and the tweaks for the 2020 model year just made it a better package. I love that it's different. You don't see many of these on the road, and I like that. But the car itself is terrific. Yes, it rides a little stiffer than its German competitors, but the handling is so much better. The steering is tighter and more direct, and it sounds better than the German cars. It really drives more like a sports car than a sporty sedan, and this is with just the Ti trim with its base 2.0 liter turbo engine. After just one test drive the Giulia vaulted to the top of my list. And with the lease deal the local dealer is offering, it's going to be hard to pass up.

You might just want a better car than a BMW or Mercedes. How is this an emotional choice? Better doesn't mean the same to everybody. If you ask my next door neighbor, the best would be the one with lower fuel consumption and lower maintenance cost. For my colleague, it would be the one with more useful space. For another, it would be the more luxurious inside. For yet another, it would be a long time dream fulfillment on whatever brand fits the bill. For a driver's car kind of person, or someone that just wants a sporty car, it could just be the one with a better engine or better dynamic behavior. These are all valid pragmatic choices. And tell us, how can anyone tell a Giulia wouldn't be Lexus reliable? Is this also a factor when considering a BMW or an Audi? How is it then when considering an Alfa-Romeo? I'm tired of people associating reliability issues with Italian brands. Don't they check leasing companies fleet availability ratios? Maintenance costs from rental car companies? There is a lot of interesting *reliable* data to be found there.

The reliability stuff is nonsense. It is repeated time after time by journalists who are literally quoting each other. The only issues were with a couple of press cars (Alfa being idiots in not ensuring the cars were 100% before handing them over) and software issues. All dealt with. There is NO issue in buying a used one of these. Have you noticed how none of the journalists can tell you what the reliability issues to look for are??!

Several cars mentioned as possible competitors with Alfa, each one for different reasons. Nevertheless, for driving dynamics, not one of those is valid as Alfa is. For keeping its exchange value, for its infotainment system, for refined interior materials there are competitors - but as far as we talk about driver's cars: it's just Alfa after all leading the way for the others to follow. Not in vain they talk about meccanica delle emozioni, mechanics of the emotions. Alfa has clearly its own soul. What about any of the others, I doubt.

Thanks for this. I’ve been in the market several times for this class. I currently have a ‘19 S4 and A5. After driving each of these out If I’m honest, I typically will go to the BMW as the 1st choice as it’s the most modern of the competition. I like Audi’s packaging and interior space, they typically hold their value and discount aggressively. If I would trade in either car I’d still probably go back to BMW though, I’m not a huge fan of the 2020 updates Audi made and the touchscreen-only interface in an interior not designed for it. Mercedes has the best looking interior but there’s so many options you can never get one like you want it. Alfa is nice but after dealers in St. Louis got hammered with too many 2018s that took them years to sell through they no longer keep any in stock. Cadillac is fine, but who buys one in their 30s?

This is a tough one for me. I think that this is the best driving car in the segment, period (Ti, haven't driven the quad). I wanted a coupe, so I moved on. That said, if I wanted a sedan, perhaps the main concern would be the less than solid dealer network. Several have gone out of business and there is no way to know if your local dealer is going to be next. I would hate to buy a car only for the dealer to go under, especially if I need warranty work. That said, I agree with all of the points raised in this video. Alfa has a solid product here, but their general execution just hasn't been where it should be. They just haven't been aggressive enough in building the brand, or the product portfolio and it has cost them.

The problem is that Alfa is sitting under the Fiat umbrella and Fiat is not doing well in North America. Hence FCA’s fear of investing large sums into marketing, but the brand not succeeding anyway because Fiat has no “Americanized” models to sell. I love your review and I can’t disagree with anything you said. However. I’m a combat Marine and for part of my time in the Corps I was a recruiter. We used to talk to potential Marines about the benefits of joining, some of which were intangible. Now, when I say that, and you think about the Marine Corps, you already know what I’m talking about. I feel like it’s the same with the Alfa Romeo Giulia. BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti all deserve respect for making great cars. But do they move you? Do you break out in a giant grin every time you see your car or walk toward it or climb in or start it up? Do you love the history of your legendary marque? How about the feel and the style? Does it make you feel wonderful to be climbing into a car that was designed and built in Italy? Do you like the fact that you aren’t driving a brand that you see all around you every day? Life is too short to drive boring cars. I know sometimes you have to. We have all had to. But if you are looking at this review, you are probably at a point in your life where you don’t have to drive a boring car. So, maybe don’t? Just because qualities are intangible doesn’t mean they are insignificant. Buy the motherf*¢ker that makes you grin like the Cheshire Cat with every turn. You’ll thank me.

Alfa in general has average reliability at best. It’s comparable to Range Rover/Jaguar in my opinion. That is usually fine for high end luxury cars as they’re far more complex and are leased, but their resale values are horrific. However, when you apply that reliability to a $40k base car, it’s not a good proposition. The repair costs become crazy in proportion to the sale price.

Jean-Paul Le Clercq Persuant to the fact that Alfa has a history prior to 2016. Why would you discount it? Also pursuant to its record since 2016. It’s not just the 2017 Giulia that suffered from infotainment issues. All models did and in 2018 as well. Also, they’ve had other serious faults too. My cousin (by marriage) is an FCA technician for high end cars (Ferrari, Maserati some Dodges and Alfa) in New York and he keeps me up to date. Giulia has a 13% chance of not needing repairs over initial 3 years according to CR. Car and Driver had tons of reliability issues with their 2018 Quadrofoglio, throughout their 40k mile long-term test. Some well-known (common issues): Remote start (TSB exists) Battery compartment cover leaks Brake pad sensor wiring issues (TSB exists) Air Conditioning condenser icing up (Giulia and Stelvio issue) A/C blower stops working while driving, but only if the auto start/stop is turned to “ON”. Misfires after the W05 recall update. Auxiliary water pump (low pressure, for turbo) Constant electronics issues (codes thrown, gauges not working, oil sensor, etc) There are unfortunately many others. These issues are common to North American and European Alfa-Romeos and to models other than the Giulia. Alfas unfortunately have always been less than reliable, though certainly gorgeous and fun to drive.
@TheBupolo
@TheBupolo 3 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 I didn't have any of those issues. My infotainment would occasionally reboot. It's also the first generation of a vehicle, I'd expect some small issues here and there. Can you tell me how many issues first gen hondas had? I drove a 1997 Acura 3.2TL that had like 4 different recall fixes early on. Is Acura an unreliable car? I think it's fair to say we we'd need to see how the vehicles are doing off warranty 5-10 years down the line. If the car avoids major mechanical problems, then I think it can be deemed as reliable.

One reason, why it puts the power down so well, is the high revving nature of the engine. It is really close to n/a engines in terms of power delivery. You can for example compare the the rpm, where 90% of maximum torque is reached. In this car, it streches about 4500 rpm, from 2000 to 6500 rpm. Most turbocharged engines tend to have much smaller rpm bands, where they reach 90% of maximum torque, which means they have to rely heavily on engine torque, to make the same power.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 3 жыл бұрын
You’re talking about turbos of the 1980’s and 1990’s. Modern turbos have wide torque bands and twin scroll turbos have one scroll for low RPMs and one for higher RPMs. This is common to all twin-turbos.
@fwebe2871
@fwebe2871 3 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 You are completly wrong. Just do yourself a favor and compare them, before you post comments, as i did the work myself as well, before posting my initial comment. Take the 2.0 Multi Air Q4 in the Giulia for example. The rpm range of 90 % of maximum torque doesn't even reach 4000 rpm and that's without considering turbo lag. The normal 2.0 Multi Air is even worse. Just to mention, both are twinscroll turbocharged engines, which isn't the same as twin turbo, which you seem to got confused with. Just for comparison: A BMW M340i only has a rpm range of about 4000 rpm, where it reaches >90 % of maximum torque, not considering turbo lag.

They are only this month scheduled to switch to an in-house 3.0 and no one yet knows what it will be like, but we know it’s based on the Alfa Quad’s 690T.
