Heifetz's staccato is a true staccato, it can't be played very fast, unless you want to lose that edge. I've seen other violinists playing this piece very fast, but it just sounds like a spiccato, and sounds weak and flimsy, whereas the bow should really digs into the string, also Heifetz's control is incredible.

There is a flying staccato. It can sound like spiccato, but it doesn’t mean it’s not true staccato. And there is no speed limits of “ true” staccato. If you like Hiefetz’s staccato-very nice, reasonable, but don’t tell such things about other great violinist. Alexander Markov has a great flying staccato, one of the best I’ve ever seen. It sound like spiccato sometimes. Is it false then? Or Wieniawski, who was known for his super staccato skills, could play very fast and very many notes per one bow. Seriously, it’s very doubtful argument.

@delgesu8415 All I'm saying is, the stroke Heifetz is using is rock solid, and it is aggressive. It can't be played faster than that, unless you want to play with more of a spiccatto stroke, and lose that wonderful edge. Heifetz was a very aggressive player. He wasn't afraid to make ugly sounds on his violin in order to get his message through. Anyone looking for pretty players must look elsware.

Actually I like the debate you guys put up here. But either spiccato or staccato, all sound good in this piece.

I assume that’s a facetious comment since I think Heifetz was dead before Ling ling was born

It is not so necessary, the staccato is easy, you just have to learn from other pieces.

@@Andrew-X sttacato is totally easy in any speed, Thats why the violin is hard at bow techniques, but is totally easy play the sttacato from 40 to 120 (metronome).

@@Andrew-X Such a primitive instrument. Basically monophonic, 4 strings and hardly any timbers. No wonder Maestro Stradivari had to invent the guitar.
