Wow, same here! My great-granny was around in 1912, and she wasn't anywhere near the Titanic either! She never even saw the ocean, or an iceberg! But she did see a couple of decent shipwrecks on Lake Erie, because the Great Lakes are bastards and she lived near the shore her whole life, so close enough?

So, second class men were actually the least likely to survive the sinking, and we still aren't sure why this is today. However, there was something of a theory put forward at the time by second class passenger Lawrence Beesley. At one point during the sinking, he heard someone shout that they were letting men into lifeboats on the other side of the boat. He saw a lot of men go to the other side, but Lawrence decided to stay where he was. He hypothesized that that's what saved his life because he later learned that the order of "women and children first" was being interpreted to mean "women and children only" on the other side of the ship, whereas it was interpreted as "women and children first and then men if there's still room" on the side he stayed on.
@NorthWestern1919
@NorthWestern1919 Жыл бұрын
Ah, a fellow nerd! Lawrence Beesley had a rather interesting story. As you mentioned, he stayed on the side of the ship where men were allowed to board, and was allowed to board Lifeboat #13. When the boat hit the water, a discharge of water from Titanic's hull pushed it back to where another boat, #15, was being lowered right on top of it. Fortunately, the crew managed to cut the ropes holding #13 to the lifeboat davits just in time to get out of the way of #15. Beesley himself said that he would never again consider 13 an unlucky number, as it was #13 that saved his life.

I remember hearing in a documentary that 2nd class men were the least likely to survive because of 3 factors: 1) Women and children were put on lifeboats first, and 2nd class men were neither. 2) Men in 1st class were given priority due to their wealth. Some may have even paid to board a lifeboat, but 2nd class men didn't have the luxury to bribe anyone. 3) Men in 3rd class were more likely to be laborers, thus they had the strength to fight their way out of 3rd class and save themselves.

I wonder as well if third class men were less likely to pay respect to the ideas that first class men had any more right to a lifeboat than they themselves did and were willing to board one. Whereas 2nd class men may have felt more pressure to behave in a certain way believing it was the gentlemanly thing to do not realizing plenty of first class men weren't above saving their own skins. There is a certain level of caution associated with the middle classes vs the rich and poor who for different reasons are more likely to take risks. Just an amateur psychology analysis. It may also be that crew members were less likely to challenge upper class men vs 2nd class men. Some third class men may have been allowed to board because of their physical strength was needed for rowing.

My great grandmother was a survivor on the Titanic. Her journal entry is so enlightening as to what was going through her head as a 2nd class passenger. April 12, 1912 Dinner was good. I had roast beef. April 13, 1912 Just had lunch. It was lobster bisque. April 14, 1912 Oh the boat is sinking! Thankfully I managed to sneak into first class and get into a lifeboat.

I think she switches between British and Scottish mid-sentence unintentionally. That can happen if a person moves from one English-speaking-area to another around ages 10-13. That happened to 2 people I’ve met. It also happened to actress Anya Taylor Joy. You can hear Anya unintentionally switching if you watch her interviews. Also, Eleanor’s twitter bio says “comedian with a confusing accent.” So I think that means that she switches unintentionally for those reasons.
