#GreenGoblin #SpiderMan #WillemDafoe
Today I’ll take a look at what made Willem Dafoe so great as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002).
Spider-Man is a 2002 superhero movie directed by Sam Reimi, starring Toby Maguire and Willem Dafoe. It was one of the first modern Marvel movies, and Dafoe's performance as The Green Goblin helped set a precedent for many Marvel movie villains to follow. So let's look at how he got the role, and what made his Green Goblin so great.

I worked on this film doing VFX. On all these shots. Man, what a blast from the past. We had no idea it would be this successful, we laughed at it in dailies. Also...its incredible how high-fidelity the photography is compared to today's Netflix or Hollywood films shot digitally. I was a VFX artist so I would promote digital things, of course...but I realize now film looks incredible.

as a child, i was absolutely terrified of the green goblin. i was scared of the scene where norman shakes violemtely and breaks out of the chamber. seeing willam dafoe's raw portrayal of the emotions of norman was scarier than the goblins mask itself. every second of norrman was like i was really there, seeing the man. the goblins laugh is still ingrained into my head as something that evokes a primal fear from my childhood.

That story about the teeth is the best part of this video. And it makes perfect sense, and I can see why the producer wanted that. But the improvisation to leave his natural teeth on, in the mirror scene adds to the viciousness of the goblin, and we don’t even know they did that to the audience. Great work.

Growing up with it as a kid and seeing it now as an adult , you can really see the love the man had for the source material and the love he put in the actors heart making them wanna preform there best . I seriously don’t think with the way superhero movies are now and how connected every movie has to be and how it has to be part of a bigger cinematic universe we won’t see this type of story telling of Spider-Man in a movie where it’s just about him and the people in his lives and not about a larger universe but hey at least we got this

Willem DaFoe is the PERFECT live-action Green Goblin, and I feel like he would've done an absolutely perfect Joker for any Batman movie! The man is a little crazy, and that's what makes him so great!

Plus, if you noticed in this video there was a clip showing Christian Bale who played Batman in the Dark Knight Trilogy along with Willem Dafoe in the same scene together, I don’t know the title for that movie though, just a cool coincidence. I’m sure Willem Dafoe would’ve been great for a Joker role, but I’m glad we got Heath Ledger.

I've always loved William DeFoe and I'm so happy to see him get the credit he deserves as an actor! His acting in No Way Home is incredibly moving, proves his amazing control of his face and voice to move from warm and soft to dark and terrifying, and it heightens the overall movie from an artistic perspective. Solid video, and so happy this sweet man and passionate and incredibly talented actor is getting the praise and recognition he deserves!

There was so much creativity and passion put into the Raimi movies, from the performances to the effects team and everyone else. I've tried watching these other MCU movies but they feel like something else. Sure the Raimi movies can be cheesy at times but they felt so much more authentic than these new marvel movies nowadays. This was a risky move. Something new and unconventional. These new ones feel like they're just betting on the "safe path" once they saw how lucrative these types of movies are

It's strange, I feel a sort of retrospective anxiety and simultaneously an immense relief upon learning that Willem Dafoe had to fight for the role. Raimi's Spider-Man is the very first movie I ever saw in theaters at just 1 year old. Ever since then, it's remained my very favorite film series of all time. Easily more impactful for me than ANY other media. I've seen them all a million times, and I'm somehow lucky enough to have been born just in time to witness each one's release, and the hype surrounding them, all during my formative years. The composition of every scene, the delivery of every line of dialogue, they're distinctly and permanently burned into my brain. And Dafoe's performance was so perfect. The thought that it more easily could have been Nicolas Cage or anyone else in his place... it feels like a bizarre perversion of what I now consider to be a timeless, classic, revolutionary masterpiece, created exactly as it was meant to be. As if the universe willed it the very moment of its birth. I can't imagine a world without Raimi's Spider-Man, or without Dafoe's Goblin. I don't want to. They made me who I am.

@@CinemaStix This would be the one! Only ever saw the first Garfield movie, same with Holland's. Don't think either of them were bad, but to me they don't hold up against Maguire's Spider-Man of 2002. Seeing as I saw the 2002 one multiple times as a kid, and can appreciate the acting and other aspects of the movie even more now as an adult; it has only improved in my eyes. It's always super cool seeing the real-world background for how a character ended up the way they are presented on the big screen. The casting battles, the actor's thought processes, why they presented certain scenes the way they did, etc. It's like getting a glimpse into the bigger picture of what makes the artform art to begin with, and why it ends up being art at all.

@CinemaStix
@CinemaStix 2 жыл бұрын
I think context and tone make the two very difficult to compare. But I would definitely admit that they both have each their all. That just meant different things to each of them. Both are pitch perfect. Why I feel Ledger stands out from most other villains in movies is how transformative his portrayal was. I think Dafoe was a great choice for Goblin, naturally and intuitively. But I think Ledger defies nature and intuition to mold a character in unexpected ways. Just IMO :) -Danny
