I think A LOT of people could benefit from tough conversations like this, dogs just like people mature, and their needs/temperaments change accordingly. I personally have a great deal of respect for any owner who can recognize and accept when it's time to re-home, it's a decision that can literally save lives.

It'd be hard at first for them, they're going to miss their dog a lot, but honestly I think after a while they'll just be relieved they don't have to live like that anymore.

A friend had a situation like this client. A dog fight broke out, I think while the baby was sleeping in another room. He intervened, and one of his dogs clamped onto his dominant hand while lunging for the other dog. He re homed his dog the aggressor, and went through surgeries and PT, that injury cost him his hand and his livelihood.

A baby adds completely different dynamic when dealing with problem dogs that issues with fighting. It's certainly a situation where rehoming would nearly always be the best option for the safety and mental health of the baby and mom. Sometimes hard choices need to be made

As much as he loves the dogs, it's not worth the risk. They could start fighting and turn their aggression onto the child, with being in such an heightened state of reactive mindset and triggered impulsive aggression. In this state, they lose all impulse control and rational. They could kill the baby in seconds, it's not a risk to take at all. Your advice was spot on.

I'm impressed how considerate everyone is here for mom and baby wellbeing. Y'all some stand-up guys.

I re homed a very strong drive border collie that started resource guarding more things as it got increasingly frustrated. Regardless of playing with a groups of dogs, walking regularly and obedience classes. This was the first dog my children ever had in the family. I’m not going to lie this dog could sense the lack of confidence in creating a comfortable situation for everyone. I had a behaviorist come in and after observation and talking for a couple hours she sent back a report. It would take even more time and money to help the situation and I probably would not get to the level of trust I was looking for. Re home would benefit EVERYONE. Dog included, the dog isn’t happy in those situations either. He went to a large animal vet who was retiring his herding dog. I learned something from that dog through that pain. Research your breeders and let the breeder pick a puppy…. a good breeder KNOWS the personalities in those litters from handling and socializing. I was devastated at the loss and had my dog handling confidence was shattered. I got back on the horse… let a different breeder pick the puppy. There’s no shame in doing what is the healthiest for everyone in the house. Especially if you exhaust all avenues at your disposal. The dog is now happy and the kids weren’t living with a negative first dog experience.

I wouldn’t want to small dogs fighting in my house if I had a new born but certainly these put bulls! I would put my foot down if I were her. One of them has to go. Joel has the best advice.

At the 14:39 mark, the second approach was a kind of "I'm sorry" approach after being corrected, but the next move was a subtle nip toward Joel's hand. All dogs do these actions, but the repercussions are worsened with a pit. The owner is oblivious to the subtleties needed to house those dogs. Both need to be re-homed.

Such a difficult and heartbreaking decision to have to make. Great advice. But...that sky behind Joel's left shoulder!! ❤❤❤

I totally agree with this opinion I have middle aged pitlab mix who is getting older and is very chill. Under rough circumstances I accepted a small pitbull terrier female into my pack who THOUGHT that she was going to bully my old man. She learned real quick from day one that you will NOT bully my boy and learned who ran the house hold. I love her though, sometimes you have to be tough on these guys these are REAL dogs that can kill it’s okay to raise your voice and not take their crap lol.

Wow Joel! This is a GREAT video. I mean.. it’s actually terrible.. but I mean great in the sense that there’s gonna be people out there that NEED to see this . This was what I’d feared with my own dog ( a story you’ve come to know by now) but I was VERY lucky that in my case, rehab was a possibility (and subsequent success but still a work in progress) . My heart goes out to the owner :(. His suggestion of basically what I’ve always called the “crate and rotate” routine works when it works but it’s entirely dependent on the humans to not make any mistakes. And that’s not realistic . That’s I how I ended up in the hospital.. One of us took one dog out of the crate not realizing the other had done the same with our other dog in another room. Sorry I missed you in solana!! Gonna catch you next month though! Please keep putting out the amazing content.. you are helping so many people out there . Full disclosure though.. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t laugh at that point when you referred to babies and children as “things”.😂😂 . I see why it came out that way . I know that wasn’t intentional. It was funny though;)

Thank you for covering this type of situation. A lot of people want to demonize anyone who rehomes a dog, or worst case scenario, has to take one to the shelter, over aggression. I think they don't realize that for most people who have to make the choice to rehome an animal, that's the absolute last resort, after spending thousands on training, doing everything they can to change the environment at home to avoid issues, ruling out any kind of underlying health issues that could make them act out, etc. I had to rehome a dog that randomly decided after two years that she just did not want to share space with another dog, period. After thousands in vet bills, training programs, etc over the space of three-four months, the breaking point came when she jumped on our other dog and tried to rip his face off, WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING. He didn't have a favorite toy, wasn't near her food or vying for attention, wasn't in a favored sleeping spot, even. She just walked into the room, crossed the room, and jumped on him. And our other dog, in spite of being the same size, has always done everything possible to not annoy her; he never even fought back, just tried to make himself as small as possible, didn't even make a sound. We kept them separated at all times after that until I could find her a new home with no small children or other pets, and made sure that her new owners were aware that she had been fine with another dog for 2+ years, until she suddenly wasn't, and that there was literally NO trigger, no change, nothing, that set her off, so they would understand it wasn't an issue of them always having butted heads, or he challenged her, or anything like that, and that she was just not a dog that was trustworthy around other dogs. Some dogs are simply like that, for no particular reason. They just decide they don't want to put up with other dogs, and they're not going to, end of.

Dogs fighting in the home is almost always 100% on the owners not asserting themselves as the leaders in the house. How you live with your dog dictates almost all of their behavior, and bad habits manifest quickly, especially with working breeds. Dogs fight because no clear leader has been established so it's a constant power struggle between the dogs. If they don't see their owners as someone who will protect them, they have to dictate their own terms. When a dog knows who the leader is and that their owner will protect them, or get after them if they try to initiate an attack, they have no reason to follow through with that kind of aggression. Too often dogs are treated like royalty instead of like dogs. When you constantly let things go in the home the dogs learn more and more they have the freedom to do whatever they want. That includes fighting. If your dog has serious behavior issues, don't let them on the couch or in bed. Don't give them table scraps. Don't let them leave in front of you out the door or lead you on walks. And don't allow any unwarranted barking. Those things alone will shift the dynamic very quickly but consistency is key. This needs to be the new way of life, not a quick fix attempt. There are no quick fixes in dog training.

I have so much respect for you taking into account the mom and her stress. I hope this guy knows he's got to make his baby and partner first priority. I feel like you gave them the right idea of what the right decision is.

I hope this guy does some reflecting, two pits that don’t get along isn’t a good mix for a young family with a new baby… Hope they both get what they need, obviously the guy cares and wants to fix the situation but you have to ask yourself if the fight is worth the risk and stress.

This was so real. You can’t have unpredictable fights between big & strong dogs around a newborn! I hope the methods help and they learn to chill or else one of them gets a family without being brothers under the same roof anymore. Sad situation🥺gotta PROTECT THAT BABY THO!

The problem is all it takes is one situation where your attention is not there it could end in catastrophe because it doesn't take much for a newborn to get hurt. The owners did their best but sometimes the risk is just too high.

I agree that although it is a very difficult decision, sometimes a dog needs to be re-homed. You don't necessarily have to bring the dog back to a shelter. There are non-profit agencies like Doggy Harmony that can help you find a suitable home when the dog is not the best fit for a family. These agencies can also find foster homes until the dog can be matched with the right owner. It's not fair or safe to keep a dog in an environment that keeps it in a perpetually stressful situation. It's not fair or safe to keep an entire family in such a situation either. My rescue that I adopted came from similar circumstance like in this video. With training, exercise, structure and discipline she is now a happy dog. She is my only dog but I have 3 cats that she gets along with just fine. Joel's videos were a great tool in helping me get my dog to where she is today.

Thank you for being so firm and clear in this video, Joel! The situation is already out of control and the dogs have no respect. The mother and baby need to be safe and there can be no hedging the bets with " i love my dog' notions. Too late, the love won't cut it as they have learned their behaviour now and it will take too long and too many risks to train them out of it.

So people know, I adopted Rico (blue) and after 2 months he was stolen from me in 2020. A week later I get Roofus (red) as a puppy, 1 month later I give him to a family friend while I contract in Afghanistan for 4 months, 6 months later fall in love and get a job out in California, 2 weeks go by after moving and I get a call the dog has been found. Two months later we get pregnant. And wifey came with a dog as well.

In a Memphis hospital, a mother lies in very serious condition while her two beautiful babies lie in a morgue as the father grieves because the family’s two pitbulls attacked and killed the toddler and the five-month-old baby. They had had the dogs over eight years with no incidents. The mother will live although mauled severely over her entire body, including her face, while desperately trying unsuccessfully to defend her children. The father was not home at the time. 😢😢😢 Just heartbreaking.

I have a highly reactive golden retriever. We got her as an 8 week old puppy and nobody in the house ever took her out for walks or to socialize. Because of this she is highly anxious, has severe separation anxiety with my dad, is very resource protective, and is very anxious in new places. She has bitten me on the hand and bit my little sister once ripping her thumb nail off. I currently live away from home (I was the only one that ever tried to help my dog and her anxiety that leads to aggression) and I've tried getting my parents and other family members to step up and do something. No matter how many times I've thoroughly explained my dogs issues and what my family can do to help her they don't. I really need some help and advice, my fear is the older my dog gets the harder these behaviors will be to fix and my dog is already 3.

I did a training session with you and your older dog before you had your pool installed! would love to come back just for a safe socialization place for my dog! not sure if you would remember me & Luna but we learned to advocate for her so much and she has lived such a full beautiful life despite her reactivity!

Hey Joe, I want to thank you for this great content again, IMHO still the best dog training channel around. As a helpful tip I have to recommend a video topic about the 4 ways to train a dog, you know the positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment stuff. Because when I watched a good video explaining that, which is really hard, all the things I did wrong to my dog suddenly clicked.

Is it common in the US that you do not walk your dog? The advice ”walk your dog once a day” seems a bit strange from my perspective (Sweden) were people usually goes on 3-4 walks a day with their dogs.

My buddy brought his pit over to play with my pit and they were perfect except when they were barking at strangers through the fence, then their excitement turned to aggression toward eachother. With my young daughter around the house, the dog play dates stopped immediately. No dog in the history of the world is worth risking your kid getting hurt over. Joel's right, that dog would make someone an amazing companion

Unfortunately it's not easy to just 're-home' a dog. It may be relatively 'easy' in some countries - but certainly not where I live (Phuket, Thailand). Who in their right mind is going to take on an (occasionally) aggressive American Bull Terrier XL??

The struggle is real, especially for the mother. I am a first time dog owner with a 4 yrs old girl. It took me 1.5 month just to train my golden retriever puppy not to jump on my little girl. The first two months were tough, luckily everything works out now and I have two beautiful, happy daughters.

Joel, you picked up on something you said " he's gotta be more scared of you than he wants to fight that guy" I've always felt like I needed to be in a position where my dog is more scared of me telling him off, in a calm controlled way, than wanting to do his own thing. I think breaking it down to a psychological level that is the only way to get obedience in a negative situation, in that I mean getting them to not do something. Treats are great for getting a dog to do something, but I think dogs are intelligent enough to understand a deterrent for not doing something. Keep em coming, I'm nearly all caught up 👍🐶♥️

The other thing is that when you have a new baby, you do not have time for all that extra stuff. A baby is enough of a new job. It is also the most important job you will have in your life!

Excellent video. I'm reviewing your older ones too but only on dominance. Almost a year with my adopted/rescued husky - still working on her dominance. She's fixed but marks and scratches grass at the dog park. I correct her and she doesn't do it for the full duration at the park. Same goes for her being a bully with some dogs, correct her - she gets it. However, go back a few days later - restart. She hip checks other dogs and doesn't get along with poodles. I'm not a fan of poodles either 🤔

I have a pitbull terrier and American bully they fought multiple times , I separated them and waited a couple months to get them back together ever since then they’ve been good. U just have to be hard on these type of breeds ain’t no nice way to handle them it’s just the way it is, they have high expectations when comes to dealing with pitbull , Bullys. Got to put in tht work to make sure u come out with a well behaved pitbull or bully. I know how u feel brotha I was on the verge of giving my tri bully away because my older one would pick on him I went thru it got bit and both of my hands and all I can say is patience is key G don’t get discourage keep moving forward ,I still have them both with my two baby nieces and they do wonderful around them ✊🏽

Hi Joel, great video once again. The owner obviously overwhelmed and baby's safety always come first. May I ask you how often you handle senior rescue dog with abuse history? Do they behave differently with your training method? (e.g. leash popping) How much they usually improve? Thanks in advance.

I had a similar situation with my two dogs. One is a Pitbull and the other is an English Bull Terrier. The EBT was two when I rescued the Pitbull as a puppy. For two years they got along great and then one day the EBT attacked the Pitbull and the Pitbull released the EBT on my command. Over the following 6 months the EBT attacked the Pitbull two more times and these fights were bloody with the Pitbull finishing both fights latched onto the EBT neck. I was not willing to re-home either dog, so now one dog lives upstairs and the other lives downstairs and they are separated by a gate. I have been using this solution for about 5 years now and both dogs are content with the living arrangement. I believe the advice you gave this couple is the correct advice and one of the dogs needs to be re-homed. Too risky with an infant in the house. Great video!

Structure in the home is the most important thing with aggressive dog. Same sex aggression is the most common dog on dog aggression. Yes you have to keep them separate for a while but you can make it work only some people will have that will. The place command and loose leash walking is where to start with both dogs. Yes with a family I would say the same thing. You don't want that kiddo getting between these two ever. You have to be on your toes

When someone has to rehome a dog, it’s a very hard decision. We just had to rehome our pitbull/husky mix dog. She became reactive to people and dogs right after getting spayed, which we found very odd. She bit our son 3 times, each drawing blood. For some reason, she had it in for him. And no, he never provoked her. He’s actually scared of dogs, and right when he was getting comfortable with her, she went and bit him. Now he doesn’t even wanna be bothered with the other dog even though she gets so happy to see him every time he comes home from school. She bit my mother as well. My husband finally rehomed her. Gave her to his friend. It was a rough start because she bit him various times as well, but his cat whooped her ass 2xs and now she’s doing great. I think my husband’s friend is a great match for her. He’s able to give her what she needs physically and mentally and now has a cat friend, which we never thought would happen. Rehoming is tough, but as long as you pick a person that’s gonna be a good match for the dog, it’ll make things easier.

We have a 10.5mo old dutch shepherd who has been reactive/aggressive towards our 6yr shepherd/collie/lab cross. The Dutch is now bigger than our older dog. Dutch shepherd is currently in heat so we're waiting to see if we can have her settle after hormones go back to normal (we m7ssed fixing her due to goingintoheat 2 days before surgery date). We're trying to correct the growling and rewarding when she's calm. Only an issue in the house (resource guarding of specific spaces and people) out on walks the 2 dogs are fine. We've had discussions on what happens if we can't correct the negative interactions of our younger dog. Possibilities include the older dog moving out with another family member when/if time comes.

I've had babies and dogs. The stress is real. Great advice from Joel once again. I'd be interested to know if the dogs were rehomed, how did they go in their new homes? Are they ok now?

I have 2 intact males (American bully) (olde english bulldogge) and a 20month daughter who was born into the house with them. We have gates deviding our down stairs, and Kennels. They almost never get to engage one another inside the house(the dogs). And they get multiple walks and flirt pole a day to make sure they get required physical stimulation, with small training sessions as well. When u have big intense dogs many steps r required to make sure the house hold stays safe. We have a nice lil turfed back yard where they get to hang out freely. If things get to intense we tether them apart on the turf. Which is rare.

My family had to rehome our 15 month cane corso. I have stage IV breast cancer. While I’m doing very well, I just don’t have the energy to put into him as he needs. During the San Bernardino mountain storm, we were snowed in and we were all under stress. Bruno landed a bad bite on my seven year old daughter. Twice. I tried so hard to work with Bruno. And he has so much potential to be a fantastic dog but we aren’t a good fit for him. I was put into contact with a former coworker of my mom who was willing to take Bruno and have a trainer work with him. She and I talked constantly for a week. I met with the trainer with Bruno, and Bruno’s new mom and dad and we all worked together to make a smooth transition for Bruno. Honestly, it was a weight on our shoulders that was lifted. A cane corso isn’t a dog for everybody. He’s going to a good home.

Love how Joel says it is not just about the dog ! Unlike the crazy 24/7/ praise treats people. His outlook makes more sense and more tailored for actual humans with actual dogs.

I wish I had seen this a year ago when we struggled with a year old ACD. We didn't want to give him up with all the time and training invested and how trainable he was. I had this dog so well trained, not only voice but long distance hand commands. But he progressed with random out of nowhere attacks. First bad one my wife got stitches in her hand. He had jumped and gave my 14y.o. daughter a bloody lip and my wife tried to grab him but instead he got her hands. Then he attacked me the day I got him neutered, so bad in the leg and arm that we knew it was time. Luckily we found a rescue that took him. I miss his intelligence, but I don't miss the fear we all lived in that last month.

This is a very true statement to make. Pitbulls are great dogs but they can be very territorial, and sometimes they can even fight eachother for dominance. It's a big dynamic to have in a household and it requires a constant control over them. You have to set a standard with them in your house and even with that, it's not 100% if they will be compatible with eachother. It was the question with my 2 pits. It requires my full attention with them and keep the dominance over both, everyday. They are both great dogs, and the training I've given them has helped tremendously.

Take note of the timestamp ( 14:39 ) after Joel redirects the dog and the dog kinda air nips at Joel's hand. NOT GOOD. If that dog challenges Joel like this, makes me wonder If the wife is home alone with the baby and she attempts to redirect the dog with a point of a finger or wave of the hand as Joel did, I don't believe the dog will submit to her. Most likely from watching this video, the outcome won't be good. Joel said everything that needed to be said. I know this is hard for the guy to hear, and I feel his torn emotions. I only hope for the best for all.

The most important thing with dogs is are they a safe dog and friendly, or not? They have to be mentally stable and willing to obey and respect people. Otherwise they don’t deserve your home. Period. And with two dogs , it’s even more dangerous. No one can be too careful , especially when it comes to two dogs. Rehome one or both , your life will be better. I personally prefer peace over stress and vet visits and would rehome both.

Yes, twopits are too much for moms to handle she cant care for baby and dogs at the same time. And you dont want the dogs jealous over the baby and do anything to baby. Also if you dont walk the dogs forget it and she cant do it or break up fights. Definitely rehome one to someone who can walk the dog and have a better life each one

Re-homing my dog was the hardest thing to do especially because this dog and I went through so much together. Unfortunately because my neighbours kids provoked him and my little sisters were in danger. He is happy and living his best life. But it was a hard choice I had to make.

Joel’s teaching method is awesome; I love it! He trained a dog to train other dogs and he trains us bipeds on how to interpret dog behavior, make corrections/give discipline, and give our furbabies the grace & freedom they deserve to still be who they are with their cute personalities. I LOVE this channel!!! Now if only he can teach me how to get my great dane/lab mix to sit up instead of laying on the floor to which he is magnetized.

I don’t have babies and I am still very stressed.We were 4 ppl in this dog thing when we got him as puppy and now one year later my husb and teenage kids left me alone with the devil. Had to quit my job if you can imagine that …

Pit bulls can be serious dogs. Great use of your discretion here. I seriously think your strength is bringing huge experience and knowledge, than combining an empirical approach to subjective situations. Masterful.

Near the end he tells him “you need to go on a walk every day with that dog” and I’m just like, in complete awe. Anyone that has ever had pit bulls knows these dogs NEED EXERCISE!!! Like, a lot of it!! Even one walk a day isn’t going to be enough, but it sounds like right now they aren’t even getting that and I don’t know if the guy is able to walk them more than that, so really this is a bad situation from jump, if you can’t walk your dogs at least twice a day then you shouldn’t be taking on that responsibility, honestly, because like this dog shows they are just gonna have problems. Pits LOVE to pull and just like Cesar used to do, you can let them pull you if you’re a rollerblader or skateboarder. I let my pit pull me on a skateboard at least twice a day, sometimes even 3 times if he needed it, when he was younger of course. As they get older they won’t need so much exercise, but up until age 5 or so, it’s 2-3 walks a day minimum. My dog got a much more rigorous workout by pulling me and I basically let him walk for as long as he wanted to, which was about an hour with a few breaks throughout the walk. He was an amazing dog who never had aggression issues and I credit a lot of that to the high level of exercise he received, as well as good socialization and some light training from myself just from watching dog whisperer and reading a book on it. The main point is they NEED exercise otherwise they are just so wound up with energy, of course they’re going to get in fights and have problems.
