I've been playing guitar on and off for about 10 years now. The biggest mistake I've made is not pushing myself to grow. Even though I've been playing for a while, I still play the same few songs I learned in the early years. I've just now started learning some theory and began applying that to my playing. It's never to late to learn new tricks!

100% true, a lot of people say "some musicians practice for years and never get as good as x", in reality just playing for a bunch of time doesn't mean that much. Not attacking u btw I did the same thing back when I played piano, stagnated for like 3 years. Now imagine if I said "oh I've been playing for 5 years and this guy's been playing for 5 years and he's way better"....."he must just be talented" xDD. Sry I know this have nothing, literally nothing to do with your comment, just wanted to vent haha.

I started playing guitar when I was 7 I'm now 28 and when I tell people that they think I must be a God and I don't have the heart to tell them I've stagnated for the last 15 years and I'm really no better than when I was 16 because I just haven't pushed myself.

Seven nation army 😂 I remember when I learned that and my friends and I loved it cuz we all sucked but we could play that song as a full band . Noodling is nice , just can’t let yourself noodle all day or you’ll just get bored and discouraged at the same time . Need to go back to my roots and start learning songs again. ❤

I tried to learn playing god by polyphia, and it taught me so much. I heavily recommend others to try to play really hard songs, from time to time. It may seem rough at first, but it will drastically improve your technique, once you find out how to do that shit right lol.

I'm still learning this is a beginner, 5 months in and im almost done. It was super hard in the beginning but it gets easier once i got muscle memory down. Only downside is my left hand hurts like hell after each practice session. I plan on learning more of their songs after i finish PG, cant wait

Had this happen to me when I was 14 and got my first guitar (I'm proud to say the first song I learned was Nothing Else Matters by..... Well if you don't know that's just sad.... And I was especially proud of myself because I learned it in just 3 days. Hand to God.) I thought I was good, even maybe a little bit cocky...... Until I listened to Avenged Sevenfold for the first time...... Sweep picking was WAAAAAY beyond my skill level. Or at least sweeping THAT flawlessly, because there's a kind of a "Sweep-ish" part in the solo for NEM..... But it wasn't basically the entire freaking 7 minute long song!!!! Lol so I cried in my shower for a few weeks and then I found a book on sweep picking. Yeah...... That definitely didn't take 4 days to learn....... That's something I even consider myself not that great at even though people say my sweeps sound clean... Just to me, I'll never be as sweepy as Syn. And that both still makes me sad, but also makes me push myself harder every time I try.

The truth is that most modes are just the pentatonic scale with 1 or 2 notes different. So don’t worry if you only know the pentatonic scale. You just need to know when a song requires you to add or subtract a note or two and you’re not missing much.
