I get that cell phones are popular for photography, but i will never understand why Sony abandoned the RX line of cameras just when they were getting so brilliant. I cant imagine how even more incredible they'd be with 2024 tech. All a Mark 8 needs is 4k 60p, better stabilization, and better low light processing.

I bought the RX100V second hand with its great 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens and 1st in the range to have phase detect autofocus with subject tracking. It also has an active ND filter. The RX100 models after went to a greater range on the lens of 24-200mm at F2.5-4.5 which seemed a bit of a compromise for low light situations.

Bought the RX100II second hand, didn't need so much zoom. 28-100mm seems like the right range for me. Having F1.8 at 28mm wide was an important factor for me as low light was important for night shots.

I love the RX100 VII, but it's amazing to think it came out five years ago and they seem to have forgotten about both it and the RX10 series. It's also hard to get hold of new in some regions including the UK. But yes I agree, when my back started hurting - actually it was my knees in my case - I downsized to the RX100 VII and made a video all about travelling light. I ended up trading the zoom for the fixed lens and bigger sensor of the X100V for my travels, but I'm very happy with either.

I am using the RX100 in addition to my Nikon fullframe system, mostly for travelling. I own the model 5A and 7. I take both of them with me, because of the different lenses. The M5A for low light because of its 1.8 aperture and the M7 for outdoor, or whenever I need the 200 mm tele lens. I am well aware of the restrictions that comes from the 1” sensor, but I am very happy with them as travel companions.

I too, have both these RX models and each had there own place. Given they managed to get a full size sensor in the RX 1 I think a special version 8 with ND filter and two lenses f1.8 24-70 and f2.8 70 -200 and an APC sensor would be perfect.

This is a camera that I've really enjoyed using. I most recently used it on a trip that involved a lot of museums and outdoor streetscapes. For nature shots I use another camera (FF) with a longer lens. I don't shoot video. I enjoy using cameras, not a phone, for my photography. This is a good compromise for times when you really want to use a camera but don't want to carry one

Rx 100 series are a good upgrade over your phone camera these days. Now, even in 2024 I got a Mk Va not the VII strictly on aperture considerations, gotta film/take photos fast in the woods etc. And just got back from Disneyland Paris and it totally worth its money. You kinda don't want to take a bigger camera in such a crowded environement , where extension sticks/monopds are forbidden. So as a holiday trip camera paired with a carbon monopod as shooting "handle" and a couple Gopros or any other action cam you are pretty much covered.

However, I did just weigh my camera backpack with the Canon 6D, 80D, Tramron 24-70, and 70-200 f2.8 lenses and a few other things in there. Around 17 libs. May explain why it gets left home a lot. Its a great camera ive owned the mark 1 version for years. It has one major flaw and that is if you get dust on the sensor like i did then it is crazy difficult to clean the sensor and it has to go back to Sony. Sensor dust can happen in a flash even if you are careful. Next camera for me Panasonic G100 m 4/3 where you can access the sensor easily.
@StraitKnopfler
@StraitKnopfler Ай бұрын
Yes this is definitely a big issue. I have a similar camera (TZ200) and I don't know how hard it is to clean the sensor but I modified it by putting on a filter adapter, so now it has a UV filter and a lens cap. It makes it more bulky and fiddly to carry and use but gives me a more peace of mind that it's protected from dust and will last a few extra years. These are great cameras but I don't like the way the lens opens. I'd really recommend adding a filter adapter.
@Mr-S.C.
@Mr-S.C. Ай бұрын
@@StraitKnopfler It's very difficult to clean as I had a TZ10 and that had sensor dust issues. I had to bin it in the end because it was impossible to work with a blob on the image. Nothing else wrong the camera just the blob. Nothing i did got rid of it as well. Don't forget dust can enter from the sides on the barrel lens as well as it folds away dust gets blown into the camera. The lens cap will help but the barrel is the real issue here. Keep it clean and dust free if you can.

I've owned a RX100 Mark III for 10 years now. Very convenient for casual photography and it produces prefectly good images. The only complaint is in the lack of buttons. Choosing the autofocus point is really awkward, and should you want to focus manually, setting a dedicate button to switch between Av and focus is the fastest way.

I personally use a Sony RX100 VII. In terms of portability, I admit that the RX100 VII does not perform well in low light conditions, such as indoors, compared to full frame cameras (I compare it to my other Sony A7C II). I think the reason Sony has not yet produced a new model may be because Sony prefers to produce things that make more money and are more appealing to the general public, such as selling new lenses that make more money.

I wish companies would make these again. I buy cheap $200 phones, never the $1k+ flagships that finally have serviceable image quality, so I need a real dedicated compact camera. I love these because I get to leave the stresses of my phone behind and not my photography. No distractions. Plus: 🔹Lossless quality optical zoom 🔎 🔹Flip screen so you can see yourself and use the best lens at the same time ✌️ 🔹Built-in ND for video exposure 😎 🔹A nice big 1" sensor for great pocketable IQ and DR. ✨ 🔹Dedicated ergonomics built for purpose and custom modes to ensure fast tactile operation which at times can be set while powered down ⚡ 🔹It doesn't waste my phone battery or storage while shooting 🔋 🔹It doesn't need to be updated every year for another $1k because they killed the battery life and RAM with updates. 💵 🔹It looks touristy so I'm less likely to creep people out taking photos of them on a compact than with my phone. 😊 I checked out the Xiaomi 14 1" sensor with the shutter button module, but it costs more than my GRIII for way less camera. Personally, I'd rather spend more to get more camera, and watch KZfaq on a cheapo Samsung.

During my trips, my backpack was heavy because it was packed with many travel related stuffs other than the cameras. In many occasions, I was so lazy to take my APSC or FF camera out from my backpack that I just shoot the scene using the RX100. The image quality of the photos from the RX100 was good enough, although still noticeably not as good as the APSC or FF cameras if compared side by side. In my recent trips, the numbers of photos that I took by the RX100 were more that the photos taken by the APSC or FF cameras.

It's indeed an amazing camera, but the lack of ND is a huge issue for shooting videos on a sunny day, and solutions to add external NDs are really inelegant to say the least. Also, the battery life is awful, I usually need to pack 5 batteries for a day's shoot and almost always have to recharge all of them during the night. You are absolutely right that they a just one version away from perfection, but all the years of waiting has made me accept that maybe Sony has lost interest in the rx100 line and there probably won't be a viii.

Canon uses older versions of the sensors. The current ones use the same as RX100 Mark IV. Canon does have faster lenses but they go to only 100 mm and 120 mm. Sony does have the VA model which is faster but goes only up to 70 mm. Sony has high frame rate video modes that Canon does not have and fast electronic shutters. So if you are interested in fast action stuff, then Sony is the way to go. To normal photography Canon may be better. Panasonic has two models, one is f/1.4 at the wide angle but slows fast when zoomed and it is old. Another is a super zoom up to 360 mm but again much slower

A large portion of the photos on my wall came from an RX100 and not an ILC. Especially from concerts and photos of loved ones - it’s unimposing and people are at ease around it. I found my Mk. V locally for about 300. 🤯

I picked up a v4 when I was in Osaka for $330 because my girlfriend was tired of trading lenses on and off with me between our a7r4 and r2. It's crazy to hold after spending the day with the r4 around your neck, it feels like I'm holding my iphone.

Jason, come on, you're not old! But I am, and I just bought an RX100 VII - they're getting hard to find. I don't know if Sony is dropping the line, which would be a shame. I was waiting for the last year or so for maybe a MK VIII, but I was worried that these things might become extinct. So I started shopping around finally found one at Best Buy. I hope it arrives in new condition next week!

There has been a rumor as of recently that an RX100 VIII might be even released by the end of 2024 due to the EU mandating the USB-C port to be included in future electronics. Fingers crossed for a Mark 8 of the RX100 lineup.

I don’t like Sony cameras. Usability-wise they are just odd and doesn’t vibe with me. Get a Fuji for compact cameras or Ricoh GR.

I do want a RX100 VIII, but there isn’t much market for it, plus Sony’ resources are limited. RX100 VIII has been rumoured to launch in 2020 with an even more useful 20-200mm lens (although that would certainly increase the price further), but it delayed again and again, to the point that I think it’s cancelled. You see, smartphones today can do zoom from somewhere like 13mm to 240mm (Samsung S21 Ultra referenced here), wider range than the 20-200mm lens proposed for RX 100 VIII. I know the sensors on phones are not as big, and the lenses are prime, which means you don’t get seamless zoom (other than Sony Xperia 1 series phones, but that is still made up of 2 prime lens and a zoom lens). But most people aren’t going to care about that. They find their phone fine for all of their photography needs. There isn’t demand for Sony to make a RX100 VIII. Instead, I would say Sony’s resources are well-spent on the ZV1 series. Vlogging on phone still kind of sucks, because of the tiny front camera. Sony has attempted to make a vlogging monitor for their phone, but that was cumbersome and didn’t work well, to say the least. That’s why we still have ZV cameras. I personally do want an RX100 VIII, but the ship has sailed.

I really enjoy this camera, but the battery is truly terrible for video. I use an external usb battery pack when on a tripod. If carried, I always have at least 3 batteries with me. I still love this thing.

I mean the batteries are stick thin 🫣 quite understandable that video recording will juice it out quick. BUT I'm always onboard for better battery life.

timely for me! My NEX body is starting give up the ghost, and so I'm considering if I should go UP to the A7CR with all new glass, or stay in APS and reuse my existing glass. Now I have this option to consider. Something lighter than all the above. I wonder though, how does the image quality and dynamic range compare to the 6700 let's say? I'll be using it for travel photography 90% of the time, and will be viewing the photos on a 4k TV. I almost never print, and if I do, 10x14 coffee books is usually what I go for...

This! I have an A6400 and an RX100V. I have good eyesight and a 4k monitor. I see a considerable difference. I still chose to take the RX100V to Havana over the A6400 despite the IQ difference. I'm hoping to explore Topaz or other post processing because the RX just made travel easier being so small.
@guillowsteve

interestingly been reviewing a set of photos recently and the biggest difference in IQ was the lens. My Zeiss 35/1.8 shots in the same light/environment were head an shoulders better than the touit 12/2.8. perhaps more importantly reviewing some older photo sets. My hit rate in low light was shockingly poor and wondering that the difference is between a6700 ibis vs a7cr ibis for low light IQ. At this point, loathed to go to a7cr if just for better glass at the ultra-wide range...unless there's is a marked benefit to the FF sensor
