Great transcription! My only problem is that you used 4 staves, taking up most of the screen. Even as much polyphony as some barbershop arrangements have, I still prefer 2 staves with 2 voices on each. Plus, I don’t really understand why the bar lines are connected for just the tenor and lead.

Barbershop quartets are traditionally written with the part-names Tenor, Lead, Baritone, and Bass (regardless of the genders of singers). Lead sings the melody predominantly. What’s also unique (among many things) is that the Baritone and a little less often the tenor will cross the lead part, meaning the lead can be the highest, second highest, or second lowest voice at any time. There have been times when the lead sings below the bass, but that’s very rare in this style.

My pet peeve in these otherwise excellent videos is that you often use the wrong enharmonic when things get chromatic, presumably preferring linear readability over chord identity. Examples include a G# major chord with a C natural instead of a B sharp, an E major chord with an Ab instead of a G# and, the easiest to remember, what should be a Cb major chord (the neapolitan of Bb) written correctly save for the root itself, which you wrote as a B natural.
@alistairwall5470
@alistairwall5470 Жыл бұрын
It's normally the convention within barbershop to prefer linear readability over the exact right chord spelling. Whether this is helpful or not is another question entirely.
@karlpoppins
@karlpoppins Жыл бұрын
@@alistairwall5470 Is that so? I'm surprised why that's the case when it's not for choirs, but I know little about that style of music so I'll take your word for it. Still, that's hardly the first time George misspells notes so I'm not sure to what degree his choices were informed by barbershop practices.
@NickTaber
@NickTaber Жыл бұрын
@@karlpoppins Historically, barbershop is a fairly "ear-based" musical style with roots in "woodshedding" (i.e just making up parts by ear with someone singing the melody). The aural tradition of barbershop learning has had a significant influence in barbershop's more "folky" roots that tend to jive a little less with established musical theory and practice - though barbershop is getting closer together these days. I would say nowadays you tend to see "correct" chord spelling in such cases more often than not, but different arrangers will prioritize it differently.

Huh. I love barber shop music. Really. This song did nothing for me though. To be frank I hated the arrangement. Hard to put my finger on why exactly. (The singers are really good though, so I don't blame them)

You’re missing the composer information in your transcription, you must include this, please include it in the description also, literally nowhere is JRB credited - although I’m doubtful as to how he would receive this pretty abysmal arrangement; Squeezing and contorting the harmony to fulfill barbershop requirements does not make a good arrangement for close vocal harmony imo.
