As an Asian, I can not relate at all to this and I just want to cry. I wish there were supports like this from my parents when i was younger. I probably would have done so many things I wanted. I remember the first time I worked in a clay museum in Canada, and some child made a very crappy clay pot and their parents still told them they did a good job and full of creativity, my tears just came out without control. I was never good enough no matter how hard I try and someone is always good enough as long as they try. Good thing is my parents are finally support me now in my late 30s. Late is better than never.

I think there's a balance. All praise and no constructive criticism doesn't help people to grow. It just protects their feelings and gives them an inflated sense of their abilities. That said, just insulting or never recognizing the good, just the bad has its draw backs too. It's kinda discouraging when nothing you do and no matter how hard you try, you can't get any recognition from the people you love.
@Seamannon
@Seamannon Жыл бұрын
At least I can relate to your comment, thank you! 😅 Am I allowed to relate even though I'm neither asian nor indian? I also had these strange experiences in my childhood, when I was only able to keep things together by accepting my reality as the standard for a "normal" family pattern and those supportive relationships as "ridiculous fantasies created for tv", but whenever I would whitness a genuine and affectionate moment between other kids and their parents in real life, my bubble would burst and I would cry. When I got older, I was able to only cry internally. I was also able to participate in different creative projects (like working with clay, painting, drawing, papercrafts, woodwork, singing, sewing, crocheting, acrobatics and others) ocasinally, a few times, loved it, was almost always praised by teachers as an top of the group example and asked to engage further in a regular manner, but my parents wouldn't be able to value it and didn't allow me to take part in additional classes, because it was either inconvenient in some way or they didn't want to spend the money, so they would discourage me from regular creative endevors or sports unless there was a chance to brag about it before others in some way, so then they would suddenly ask me to paint something or sing before their friends or other family members and then I would hate it and feel somehow dirty in that context, when praise was only given about me before others, but not really when it was important to me and no one else was around.
@Rebuswind
@Rebuswind Жыл бұрын
@@Seamannon sorry you have to go through that. Find self worth is a long journey for me as well. Those parenting are not unique to Asians but they are just more often to be seen. Hopefully less and less people will suffer from those. I still have good relationships with my parents, they later on realized what they did were very hard on me. They start to support me way more in my adulthood and I would not be who I am without them. However, those harms were not easy to get over.

My parents always told me not to sing, because I just can’t. I’m so confused because people who have heard me sing say I sing well. I know I’m not good, but it’s nice to think someone thinks I’m somewhat tuned. I’m also still very shy to sing in front of people. On the other hand, I love collecting instruments, yet I can barely play anything because I don’t practice. There my parents think I can.. it’s just so confusing. I know I can’t.
@deyliramirez382
@deyliramirez382 Жыл бұрын
@@arcoiris890 Well, maybe start with an instrument that is easier and watch tutorials on how to play your favorite songs. Always think about your favorite songs when you practice, that way, at least you'll have a little smile on your face when you play in front of people. If your parents tell you you have no talent again, you will know one thing you did well for sure, you enjoyed the memory of the favorite song you were playing. If you like recreating your favorite songs and making new ones, you'll figure out where you need to improve bit by bit. Just always go back to your favorite songs and why you like music in general👍😃

When I was like 8 years old I would “preform” for my family. I would get so excited to sing and dance and put on a big show but by the time everyone sat down to watch me, I’d get really nervous and go completely blank and end up doing some crappy pathetic performance instead. My family would still clap though and I felt like the most talented person in the world at the time. I cringe when I think back on those memories. I have no idea how I had all that confidence. 😬

So frickin true! Whenever my nan comes over, she FORCES me to get my guitar and play some Johnny Cash songs. It’s annoying but I do it anyway because I find it fun.

This is relatable.Except it's with singing. My mom one time heard me singing Toxic and asked me to sing it again the next day.I kept quiet the whole time and left the room.

this is literally me when my grandparents want me to show them anyone I’m interested in lmao Edit: also I just remembered that is also my parents when they hear me sing. They are like “why don’t you sing more?! Your voice is so nice! I hear you sing with your friends sometimes and it sounds great!” And I’m like “uhm idk, I’m just shy” It’s different with my friends tho, idk why 😅

I took like 2 years to play for my dad lol, but I put out some fingerstyle covers for everyone to hear on soundcloud now. I just didn't care who you are, I just wanted to give them a more authentic, to my potential, first experience, I wish I had played more for them, but they heard me through my door and now they hear me when everyone else does. Recluse life can be that way sometimes. We don't have bad intentions when we do that though.

This video speaks to my soul. There's a nice piano at my parents' house that nobody plays. Any time I visit, I want to play it but I don't because if they hear it they have to say stuff like, "Very good!" even if I'm just banging on keys or practicing scales. It's distracting, and embarrassing. My mom also asks for new recordings of my music, even though it's not the kind of music she likes. I'm pretty sure I could fart into a microphone and run it through some effects, and she'd still say she likes it.
