Situations where someone got you something really expensive but you didn't get them something equally of value even though you are would have had you known or situations where you were the only one who stuck to the minimum for financial reasons or something similarly out of your control. It's just basic empathy for the other people involved who may not be as well off as you are. Again, that doesn't mean you can't go the extra mile if you have the ability to do so but keeping it private is basic empathy. Giving an expensive gift privately doesn't have to be public. The point of an expensive gift is to convey your feelings to that person. If you're only doing it so others can see it, that's a pretty scummy thing to do. It's like celebrities who only act charitable when the cameras are rolling or they know they'll receive some kind of public recognition for their "act of kindness".

Just because you think others may feel the same way you do doesn't mean they actually do. Empathy. Also not sure why you're so against giving gifts in private. The act of giving the gift is more important than giving it in a public setting. If you want public recognition for your gift, the gift isn't genuine and you may as well not give anything at all.
