I agree, that's why I was very pleasantly surprised with Journey to the Savage Planet on PS4. Enjoyed it a lot, highly recommend.

Do you think VR could bring about a renaissance for 3D platformers? Being there in a third person god mode and feeling immersed in the environment... The dream. One of the guys from Tested was raving about Lucky`s Tale. I will find out when I get my Oculus Rift in a few weeks!

This is why I'm still happy playing on my PS2, which can play both PSOne and PS2 discs. Second-hand games for these systems are dirt cheap nowadays. I'm currently trying to complete Crash Bandicoot 3 to 100%!

A lot of great games released recently refuse to carry the name "platformer", in order to appear more "cool", and/or appeal to more people. Even Ratchet & Clank was called "action/adventure/shooter" by Insomniac, but the platformer title stuck. Have you played inFamous? Alice Madness Returns? Those are both 3D platformers, but nobody is willing to admit it.

Ps2 was one of the best for 3d platformers. One of the best of them all is Rayman 3 for me. It's environment, style, gameplay, sound, music and atmosphere alogn with breath taking scenery and lighting makes it so much better loking than any other 3d platformer or modern games as it has amazing lights in the environment and life compared to Ratchet 6 Clank, Jak & Daxter, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro who all are played on a fully lit field with no real shadow or shaders. Plus every game opens up with cutscenes to explain the plot. Rayman 3 starts like a fucking Disney Pixar movie with mysterious and ambient music like a fairy tail in a unique looking dark forest with small fairy like things flying and then the harp plays and the wonder of the world comes with the little guys and the world they have built. It was exactly everything I imagined new modern 3d platofrmers to start like. First it was just playing, then a cutscene in the game and then finally starting their opening epic and like a movie. Even today I can barely find any game as good as Rayman 3 in level design, world and use of lighting all in one. The best is 2d hand drawn animated platformers but everything else just use shaders and lighting to make everything have blooming on the highest blinding level. And it's all CoD 4 fault, if idiots hadn't popularized fps games then we wouldn't have all these dumb tryhard idiots buying shooters all the time. And nobody with money want ot make a big budget game that isn't already ripped off or a sequel to something. Wildstar is looking good though less holograms and more variety in technology and races

This generation, I got my platforming needs largely out of older consoles then the current generation. PS2 and PSP ftw: maximo, R&C, MediEvil, Dr. Muto, PoP to name a few

Ratchet and Clank All 4 One and Sly Cooper Thieves in Time might help this genre continue.

U are right, great video, the reason why i didnt buy yet ps3 is because there is very small amount of platformer games.

I would argue that the "Crash Bandicoot" style and the "Mario 64" style are from two different genres, not the same one... but I love BOTH of them so much, and they BOTH get shoved aside for "generic shooter of the week" FAR too often!

No mention of Jumping Flash! or Tomba! in this discussion makes me sad. I'm still new to the PSX 3D platformers, so I have a lot of backlog to catch up with :D

This reminded me... I'm really glad I have my Nintendo DS, because the DS has tons of AAA platforming games, both in 2D and 3D! Much easier to get the platforming fix.

I have to agree with you on this video. Back in the days of the PS1 and PS2 I used to love platformers such as Crash, Spyro, Klonoa, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper. But in this generation they have been pretty much shafted down in favor of these Overrated Shooters and Realism. Now these days there are hardly any platformers out there like there used to be back in the PS1 and PS2 era.

Anyone played a game called 'Pandemonium!' made by the same people who made GEX (Crystal Dynamics) ? that game was fucking awesome, the sequel not so much but yeah I agree too many fucking R1,R1,R1,R1 games -_-

Totally agree, fps and the doom and gloom realism games have pushed platforms to the back burner on playstation, prime example the Jak series what was the be Jak4 was canned to become the Last of Us, not necessarily a bad thing that game was made but as a diehard Jak fan I was pissed

It's hard for me to miss 3D platformers, given that as a PC gamer who primarily got his games from shareware developers like Apogee and Epic, There never really were any to be seen. About the only one I had was Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and that's better described as a 2.5D platformer, given its fundamentally 2D gameplay with 3D rendered graphics. Also, off-topic, but Would it have killed you to narrate the video? If you want us to read it, make it a blog post, not a video!

Good video, I totally agree. I mean I play some shooters cause i got nothing better to do but when I get in the mood i pull out my old ratchet and clank games and sly cooper. I would much rather play a good platformer like those instead of any bloody shooter. This genre needs to be revived!

Ratchet and Clank's reimagining and Tearaway hopefully are examples of modern platformers...

I really miss good 3D platformers!!! I was always more of a Nintendo person but I enjoyed games like Spyro too. I can't wait for the day shooters die off...

@olanoo33 Rayman is back, Crash had a couple of games in 07-08, but they were weird. Spyro...pray for him. The rest are gone.

Yeah, the only major gaming company that seems to still be putting out platformers of any kind is Nintendo. I mean, there are still occasional platformers from third party companies, but not nearly as many as their used to be. Taking what the creator of Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima said, gamers are a little too comfortable with the huge amount of first person shooters coming out that are all nearly identical.

3d platformers have died out on every platform! The main launch title for the Wii-U is another New Super Mario Bros. I'm very depressed about that.

Well PS3 has Little Big Planet (Yes I know it is more the relaxing kind of game), the Rayman games (not PS3 exclusives) and eeehh... MEDIEVIL 3: Skeletor in Space !! (Bad joke?) Well the best Platformer I played this Gen is Donkey Kong Country for Nintedo Wii. I think the WiiU Donkey Kong Country is the same more or less. But WiiU will get the exclusive of Bayonetta 2 and has Super Mario 3D World. (PS I hate Super Mario Bros gameplay. Funk Me Right?)
