Crochet has standards on what rankings the patterns call into. You could be beginner, easy, intermediate or advanced levels. I will go through what those mean and really speak to you directly about your own comfort zone and what levels you prefer to crochet with.
Your level doesn't dictate how good you are, it means where you find your joy the most. Don't confuse the two.

I guess I am intermediate. I am 84 and first crocheted at the age of 5. It keeps me sane. This being said, I have made it a practice to learn something new every month. And….i love you to pieces. Thank you so much.

I have been crocheting for 54 years. I am still learning. I learn the most from you Mikey. So it doesn't matter how long a person has been crocheting. It's wanting to learn different things. I am learning about texture. I have never done a front post crochet until l started watching Mikey. You are an inspiration Mikey to everyone.

I too have been crocheting over 50 years. Still learning which I love. I don’t like to repeat patterns. I prefer new challenges. Mikey is excellent at getting us through challenges. I never read diagrams before Mikey led us through them on one of the cruises where we only had diagrams😳 for the multi over layered pattern … yikes. But now I recently completed a huge pineapple doily in thread via a diagram! Thanks Michael Sellick for the journey

I do agree with you. Sometimes I just want a simple project with no thought involved, sometimes more thought is ok…. I sometimes do 2 projects at the same time and pick up what I’m in the mood for?

I'm advanced, but I prefer intermediate and easy patterns most. A lot of my skills are thanks to you personally! Especially reading charts, I really owe you for that. My favorite things about your tutorials is that they all have charts and written patterns to follow along, and that you spend a few minutes explaining the pattern and what it entails before starting the stitching. It really helps me decide whether I want to do the project or not before wasting any time getting started only to realize it's not my vibe, as I'm not always in the mood for certain stitches or counting.

I crocheted for many years but followed patterns. When I started watching crochet designers on KZfaq I start learning new things. I also saved a library of stitches so that I can go back and learn new stiches when I want. And sometimes I don't always remember how to do a new stitch and by saving the videos I can go back and refresh memory.

I agree. I can often decide if I'm interested in the project within the first 5-10 minutes, based upon whether or not I like the stitches.

I find many KZfaq crocheters say a pattern is for beginners when it has color changes, stitch changes or intricate stitches (using many rows in the stitch). I understand they want the viewers, but it’s frustrating for new and beginners. I’ve been crocheting more years than many of these KZfaqrs have been alive. Lol! But I spent many years making afghans. I’ve been making cardigans for about 3 years. So I had to start kind of at scratch ina sense. Doing top down sweaters is a blast! I am advanced, but struggle with memory problems due to my health. It just takes me a little longer to catch onto something new. Thanks Mickey for all you do and for being you!,

Saying a project is beginner on KZfaq creates clicks and views. So it's an easy way to gain new followers but what becomes clear if the host is doing this and it's not beginner, it ruins reputations.

Thank you for explaining the standards for grading "easy" to "advanced". When I was beginning, I stumbled when I'd get a pattern that said "easy" but I hadn't learned all the stitches themselves yet. So even though the pattern was easy on an engineering level-- how many repeats, how it was shaped--- if I didn't know all 8 stitches involved to make the pattern it was less than relaxing. Of course, once I mastered it and rose to the challenge I was so proud! Like you say, it's the zen of the journey and the learning :)

I started my crochet journey March of 2021 with a granny square blanket that I found a tutorial for on KZfaq. I did another blanket from Kristin Omdahl, then I found your 'Flower in the Square' pattern and tutorial. Because of you and your gift for teaching, I went from beginner to intermediate relatively quickly. It was my no means easy though!! I think I stopped and started that flower in the square tutorial a million times 😂 until one day, it clicked. The light bulb 💡 came on. Thank you Mikey for all that you do for the crochet crowd. 💙

Thank you for the encouragement Mikey! I’m aways happy with how my finished projects turn out when I follow your tutorials, and I love how you include the pattern, diagrams, and stitch counts in each one. I’ve learned all I know about reading patterns and diagrams from you! Thank you so much!!! I’ve been crocheting for what seems like forever… But I agree with you… The projects I enjoy the most and keep me engaged are ones where I’m learning something new and pushing my limits… But I have times where I just want to quickly finish a few things so feel like I’m getting more done and so I will choose a pattern that is “Easy” but I’m comfortable in the intermediate level and I’m working to improve my advanced level skills… Clothing is so hard even if the pattern is simple just because I want it to fit the person I’m making it for perfectly and that often means quite a bit of fiddling to get it just right… Where it fits them and the finished product meets my personal standards (🤔 I’m a tad OCD and perhaps a bit of a perfectionist 🤭) But I like to think of every project I crochet as a work of art made by hand with deep love… I don’t ever make anything randomly I always have someone specific in mind when I’m making something and I enjoy the process of making it and thinking about that person with every single stitch!

You are so adorable! I think I am intermediate, I started crocheting when I was 9 yo. My Mammaw and Godmother Marie taught me to do chains and how to basically hold and make slip knots. I picked it back up when I was in my early 20's when my friend and a lady I was taking care of taught me to sc, dc, change colors, and make a chevron afghan blanket. Than in my early 40's I really dug in and watched you, and Mrs. Bod two of my favorite YT's and have learned soooooo much more and have made in the last 7 years countless crochet projects from hats to cardigans to puppets, dolls, amigurumi, valences, and soooo much more! Thank you so much sensei for relighting my flame for crochet and making it into a huge bonfire for me!! Thank you so much xoxoxo Ginger xoxoxo

I have been Crocheting for over 40 years. I had a babysitter teach me how to chain and double crochet in rows. I made a blanket for my Cabbage Patch kid with her scraps. (yes, I still have both!) She showed me how to do a granny square because she couldn't read herself. In third grade, I found a book with photos at the library and taught myself how to read patterns. Even though it's all supposed to be "standardized through the industry" I still struggle with some patterns. I'm definitely intermediate+. With your help, I'm learning to read diagrams. But I usually have to SEE you demo the stitches to be able to understand and visualize where the pattern is going. I have learned SO MUCH from you over the years. I did some crochet in my 20's, but my free time went away and the project was never finished. I am...well...older now, decided to try crochet again this past winter and have been loving it! Friends that do a LOT of crochet and knitting have complimented me on my work, so I guess I am doing okay. Many of the Beginner patterns became a bit boring for me, the Easy patterns providing a bit more challenge and I just finished your Show Time Crochet Hat, my first Intermediate project. I have been holding off on starting this project for weeks, but finally decided it was time. I am very happy with the finished product. I am with you on skill levels. I like a challenge here and there, love learning new stitches and methods, but often I just want to stitch and relax rather than count stitches! KZfaq has allowed me to watch and learn, making it much easier to know where to put that next stitch. Reading and crocheting from a pattern would not be easy for me at this point.

You are so funny and warm spirited. I’ve been with you for a number of years and have made a few projects. You have introduced me to new stitches and definitely new designs. At times I have difficulties with patterns but watching and “listening” ( I’m hearing impaired so this is actually Closed Caption) is so helpful. Also, a video can be slowed down, stopped, started, reviewed more than once and I have also used what is written in a pattern, or a graph while listening to you and that works brilliantly for me if I’m personally confused. Thank you for all you do for the community. Hooks up, hookers! We’ve got this!

I consider myself easy to intermediate. Same as others, sometimes I’m in the mood to challenge myself, other times I just want to crochet. I don’t like fussy things so I steer clear of more complicated projects. Thanks for all you do!

First, I want to say thank you for your videos. I am self taught, and wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't have wonderful teachers like you. That said, this video was wonderful. My daughter has been telling me that I am an intermediate crocheter but I still think of myself as an advance beginner. BUT, after this video I realized I AM an intermediate crocheter. And like you, I LOVE learning new stitches and techniques. Thank you for this video. It was extremely helpful. Oh, and I love you using diagrams. Sometimes they make more sense than following a pattern. I like using both together.

I've been crocheting since I was 8 or 9. I agree with you that sometimes I just want an easy pattern that stays in my head so I can just sit back and get into it. I'm between intermediate and advanced, but easy and intermediate are my favorites. I have multiple channels that I pull from. Yours is new to me, this video popped up as a suggestion. I like your humor a lot, so I will be checking you (and your channel) out. Thanks! 😁

I am considered advanced, but I love your intermediate patterns and enjoy easy for chilling. Must always have a hook in my hand. There are times that even I say "what" on your videos, no big deal, I just slow it down and listen again. I learned to read a pattern first, then taught myself how to read the diagrams so that I could make a doily I wanted and had to have. 50 yrs. of crocheting, and I am always learning and exploring. Thanks for sharing the journey, you are an excellent instructor.

I loved how you explained the different levels. I had beginner, advanced beginners ,intermediate and advanced classes for students both left and right hook. It was so much fun. I learned diagram symbol years later when my grandmother paternal side gave me patterns from overseas. My maternal grandmother taught me how to crochet stitches and gauge but she did not have education to read patterns. She just looked at something and made it. Watching you has brought so many memories up . Tyfs. I decided to subscribe.

Doll and plush toy patterns that have been ‘ involved ‘ and 1 has taken me months. Sometimes I throw away the pattern ,use my skills and go with the zen see what comes up...now that’s fun. Thank you for all you do! Mikey you taught me how to crochet! Many of the projects I pick are because I like the way the finished pattern looks. My very first project was an advanced project. Friends I know who had been crocheting for at least 20years said it was too advanced for me. So I came to KZfaq to learn and was blessed to find you! Finished the football blanket for my nephew. I am not really sure where I fall, not a beginner but I still have a lot to learn. I started crocheting about 10 years ago. Funny story, you started me on this journey in a round about way....I was a girl scout leader and I have someone donate a one pound yarn for crafts to my troop. I went on you tube to see if there were any craft videos for yarn. Long story, short (lol, I never tell the short version) I had seen this video from the crochet crowd for an octagon blanket..it looked so beautiful! I knew my little scouts could nit do this but I was compelled to watch. I was totally hooked, I ran out and bought the yarn needed and the hooks. You were so entertaining that even when I realized I was over my head I just kept watching. Than I looked up sind beginning video, learned how to do the basics and jumped right in to your octagon video. You are an amazing teacher and a terrific entertainer. I have been watching you ever since. Thank you for my journey I have enjoyed every minute, and I have RA now so the crocheting is like physical therapy for me. I can barely walk these days due to my RA so I am so very happy that you had taught me how to crochet.

Love this clip. I have been crocheting since I was 4 (56 years ago) I can read patterns as that is what I learnt with. Patterns from the 50's, 60s that my nan had. Mainly in No. 40/20 Coats cotton. Made zilions of doilies (I still have my very first pineapple doily, I made) I taught myself to read diagrams and charts over the years. I have designed blankets for my friends and family. I have never realised that I am actually an experianced crocheter until I watched this. Thank you Mikey, as I can now honestly say "I am an expert at..." lol. I can also knit (since 4/5 years old) Love aran knitting. Hardanger, oh okay pretty much most crafts but crochet is and always will be my first love.

I am an Advanced crocheter. I was fortunate enough to have learned from my grandmother when I was a teenager. Then, my former mother-in-law helped give me the encouragement I needed to pick it back up again. If I had questions, she could easily look at things and help me understand what I was doing wrong. Most of the time, when I'm looking for a pattern, I just find a pattern I like and choose that. I very rarely use the colors of yarn they list in the pattern and I've been known to make adjustments to the pattern to fit better with what I'm trying to accomplish. But, I'm still learning how to read charts, so that still helps me learn new things and I am ALWAYS looking for "new to me" stitches to learn. :) Thanks for the great explanation of the different levels. :)

I think I'm in the easy category. I began with the Octagon throw. I believe that was videoed 4 years ago. I put it away and took it out over the past 4 years. In the beginning, I found it difficult to keep the number of stitches consistent and often ended up with too many stitches. I had to follow along with the videos or I just couldn't do it. This last time I took it out I made the leap from beginner to easy. It was like everything clicked from the last time to now. I can identify the stitch by looking at it. I learned how to read the pattern. I'm at the point where I can read the pattern step and then do it. I completed my last piece last night. Now I'm ready to stitch it together. I'll single-crochet it together instead of slip stitch. I'm glad I kept at it! I couldn't have done it without you Michael. Thank you!
