From America's Queen of Suspense comes a gripping tale of a young woman trying to unravel the mystery of a family tragedy -- a quest with terrifying repercussions. It has been ten years since twenty-one-year-old Charles MacKenzie Jr. ("Mack") went missing. A Columbia University senior, about to graduate and already accepted at Duke University Law School, he walked out of his apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side without a word to his college roommates and has never been seen again. However, he does make one ritual phone call to his mother every year: on Mother's Day. Each time, he assures her he is fine, refuses to answer her frantic questions, then hangs up. Even the death of his father, a corporate lawyer, in the tragedy of 9/11 does not bring him home or break the pattern of his calls.
Mack's sister, Carolyn, is now twenty-six, a law school graduate, and has just finished her clerkship for a civil court judge in Manhattan. She has endured two family tragedies, yet she realizes that she will never be able to have closure and get on with her life until she finds her brother. She resolves to discover what happened to Mack and why he has found it necessary to hide from them. So this year when Mack makes his annual Mother's Day call, Carolyn interrupts to announce her intention to track him down, no matter what it takes. The next morning after Mass, her uncle, Monsignor Devon MacKenzie, receives a scrawled message left in the collection basket: "Uncle Devon, tell Carolyn she must not look for me."
Mack's cryptic warning does nothing to deter his sister from taking up the search, despite the angry reaction of her mother, Olivia, and the polite disapproval of Elliott Wallace, Carolyn's honorary uncle, who is clearly in love with Olivia.
Carolyn's pursuit of the truth about Mack's disappearance swiftly plunges her into a world of unexpected danger and unanswered questions. What is the secret that Gus and Lil Kramer, the superintendents of the building in which Mack was living, have to hide? What do Mack's old roommates, the charismatic club owner Nick DeMarco and the cold and wealthy real estate tycoon Bruce Galbraith, know about Mack's disappearance? Is Nick connected to the disappearance of Leesey Andrews, who had last been seen in his trendy club? Can the police possibly believe that Mack is not only alive, but a serial killer, a shadowy predator of young women? Was Mack also guilty of the brutal murder of his drama teacher and the theft of his taped sessions with her?
Carolyn's passionate search for the truth about her brother -- and for her brother himself -- leads her into a deadly confrontation with someone close to her whose secret he cannot allow her to reveal.

I could barely stop listening to this. It is so well written and really well read. It gripped me to the end although I did guess part way through who the real baddie was. The random music three quarters of the way through was a bit odd and then the other bit towards the end. I have no idea what that was all about, but fortunately nothing seemed to be missing.

Am I the only listener who would have liked it to carry on? Do Carolyn and Lacey survive? How is Mack involved with Howie? Was Elliot really so calculating and evil? Etc, etc, etc... Loved it but have been left hanging off the edge of a very steep cliff.....

Thank You so much for the free upload. I will give it a 'Like' for your kindness. Much as I'm an arm chair sleuth & crime book fan, & after trying several books by this author, I've only had the attention span to complete one of them. I really wanted to enjoy this Author, but don't get along with her style. I'm meaning this as constructive feedback, rather than being an ungrateful ass. X❤

Very well read by an excellent narrator, but not well researched by the author. Machinery as large as a wrecking ball doesn't just magically appear one morning and start knocking down buildings without extensive preparation. Generally, the windows and doors are removed prior to demolition. The wrecking ball apparatus often has to be constructed on site and has to be properly positioned. Carolyn would have noticed this Machine if she is as smart a person as written. A building that is going to be demolished is going to have been inspected so that no squatters are inside, (or kidnapped women 🙄) with a fence to keep people out. Inspectors would have noticed crosses in the basement!!! Besides, the ending was nice and tidy with the criminal confessing all like in the old Perry Mason TV shows, Which NEVER happens. It was just bad writing.

Clark is one of three authors who've written a ton of books but who I have never read, so thanks for the opportunity. I'm going to hold out the possibility that maybe her first books were better, but this one was truly awful: insipid, plodding, predictable...honestly, poorly written with dialogue not tailored to each speaker and just terrible overall. [I won't mention the most egregious scene because it involves spoilers but it's literally incredible]. Every character is wildly elevated economically and vocationally, and not surprisingly, receive "rich-people justice." Maybe if they were normal people, I'd have had more sympathy, but sentences like "Whenever Mother was away, she let her long-term housekeeper have a mini-vacation" (O, thank you, Mistress!) do not cause me good feelings towards the speaker. The summer house on the Vineyard, the clubs in Connecticut, the yacht in Corfu, the apartment on Park Avenue West...I have no interest in any of these people. It was like watching a Lifetime movie and who knows, maybe that's what Clark was going for?
@catrinlewis939
@catrinlewis939 10 ай бұрын
I imagine she elevated the economic and social scale of her characters so her readers could live vicariously through them. It was the same in the 1930s, when struggling Americans enjoyed watching films set in high society. It took their minds off their own daily grind. And if those upscale characters have troubles and griefs despite all their wealth, so much the better. Me, I wish I could have been MHC's editor. There's a lot of fluff I would have advised her to cut out. Like the place where the POV character says she turned on the bedside lamp with one hand and grabbed the phone with the other. Who cares about dear Caroline's little juggling act? Who?

@@veroniquedambricourt2489but it’s her opinion and many readers/listeners enjoy reviews, myself included. It’s unhelpful to hear what others think. I’m just beginning this one but I’ve read one and had to discontinue reading another by her; that’s how horrible it was. So hopefully this one will be better
