This was the first number one record by a British female artiste that was self penned, no one can take that away from her, she also happens to be my Mum. God bless you Mummy xxx

I thought it was a collaboration of Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch who wrote that. Kate Bush was the first British female artiste that solely self penned and also wrote and played her own music to her song, the song was ''Wuthering Heights'' which was a number one hit 1978. Gaz UK.

London is now nothing but a blandified globalist holding pen full of Okra and Starbuckery. It is no longer the essence of Englishness, but the complete antithesis of it. This song was number one on my 9th birthday. Wednesday 26th May, 1965. It would be my last birthday living in North London, as my family moved to Surrey, later in August the same year. It was definitely a sign that the times were changing for me and sadly the end of a very happy and significant part of my life. I heard this on the radio program Pick of the Pops, with Paul Gambaccini a few days ago, the day after my 61st birthday. The memories of a very special time in my life came flooding back. Which I took so much for granted then, but cherish those precious memories now. Especially when my birthday comes around and this song is played on the radio. It will always be a very evocative song for me. Many thanks for posting on KZfaq.

Thank you so much for explaining the song with the video. They just didn't seem to originally be connected & I was wondering what the connection was (if any). Have recently watched S2E1 of It's Dark Outside and the song is played on a record player by an actor but it wasn't used as the theme song. In retrospect the song does go with the video chosen by Witheredgoogie but I assume it wasn't used in the film Four In The Morning (which I must now watch!).

Someone commented that Jackie was a friend of Pet' Clark. Actually, Clark did not want her around. They were not good friends. Hatch was eager to write songs with Jackie, for all the other big names. Pet' could never compete with a voice like Jackie's. It's a shame Jackie dedicated herself to the cheating husband, who later chose to keep her name off the credits, specifically accepting an award in the US. Jackie had an amazing career before Hatch or Pet' Clark came around. Thank goodness so many of us knew and appreciated her.
@slrpaman3 ай бұрын
By what authority are you writing this? Do you have some information I don't know perhaps? Jackie was my Mum and Tony is my Dad, auntie Pet was always around and yes they were friends. I agree that Mum could out sing Petula ten fold but after Downtown the US label were desperate for new material, 'Other mans grass' and 'I couldn't live without your love' were supposed to be recorded by Mum but happily passed on to Petula as she was selling loads of records in the U.S, Mum got the royalties so she was very happy. I was at the particular awards ceremony you mention sat on a front table with auntie Pet and my Dad, he was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame for two songs, Downtown and Forget him (Bobby Rydell). Mum had nothing to do with those two songs, they were written solely by Dad. Mum didn't have an amazing career before meeting Dad and being signed to Pye Records, she had an amazing voice but was still just doing the clubs. Darren
@harryhackney64162 ай бұрын
Petula did not get on with Jackie she used to give her the cold shoulder All the time. She could outsing petula Clark anytime. Besides writing a lot of songs for her she preferred to be a singer songwriter. Hatch was just a man and a piano and not really heard of Jackie made him famous. Petula did not know it was Jackie who was writing her songs and NOT hatch. Hatch asked Jackie not to mention it to petula and took the credit for them. After Jackie passed away in 2015 Hatch tried to claim the copyrights to the songs she had wrote. He was told to stay away from Stoke on Trent because she was very well known for sticking to her Stoke roots. Hatch was seeing her best friend some friend I believe they are still alive and married. Jackie’s second husband banned hatch from her funeral. I met Jackie a few times in Newcastle under Lyme and some of the clubs she sang in. And yes she is still the only person to knock the Beatles off the number one spot. And from Stoke so she is the most popular artist to come from the area. Her neice has been asked to do a cover of some of her songs I believe. LOOK FOR YOU BABY A RARE EDITION OF JACKIE TRENT ON UTUBE AND MAKE YOUR OWN MINDS UP. Can’t say anything the daughter because never seemed to be talked about. ONE MORE THING HATCH LOST HIS CASE IN TRYING TO CLAIM FOR THE COPYRIGHTS. DONT KNOW IF PETULA KNOWS ABOUT WHAT HATCH WAS KEEPING FROM HER. ♥️

@@harryhackney6416 Harry please get your facts right before you post, Tony Hatch was my Mums second husband. The scene at Chiswick where they _borrowed_ the speedboat, is pretty well the same today, but with no ugly iron barges littering the riverbank. Tower bridge is the same as is the Greenwich observatory and the bridges, but everything else is no longer there. *All* of the industrial docks have been demolished, being replaced by modern residential and commercial buildings. Even the Woolwich ferry piers have been rebuilt. The views are _very_ different today. The Woolwich ferryboat they were on was the _John Burns,_ yes the same name as me, the ferry seen in the river was the _Ernest Bevin,_ written on the side. Both were only a few years old at the time of filming. Both were taken out of commission in 2018.

Think the attention went to his head when appearing NEW FACES And got the name mr nasty. I never spoke to him and didn’t want to even when they were out together. The reason I say leave Jackies songwriting alone is that Mr nasty Hatch was trying to claim all the royalitys from all the popular songs were written by him and him alone claiming Jackie had no input in any of the songs. He was banned from Jackies funeral for all different reasons. I don’t know if Jackies ashes are back home now in Chesterton Stoke on Trent. Her name will never be tarnished by the likes of hatch. The people of Stoke with make sure of that. Once a stokie always a stokie. ♥️♥️ I think the song writing incident is sorted now in Jackies favour. RIP also to Fulham born Ann Lynn whose scenes from the 1965 film 'Four in the Morning' are used in this video. Much of Fulham banks alongside the river Thames, so her on the riverboat is so apt. Also, despite some other comments here, by 1965 Ann Lynn had already bravely participated in films that highlighted the changing demographics of London's population and its passions, without prejudice.

Ann Lynn was such a beautiful soul. Its only recently I discovered more and studied her career. Appallingly treated by Anthony Newley who discarded her for Joan Collins. But bounced back with modesty and dignity. Ann has grown on me more and more as time goes by. God Bess you Ann.

RIP Featured actress Ann Lynn. And watch films such as race-drama Flame in The Streets (1961), the taut thriller Strongroom (1962) and The System (1964) for further proof of her exceptional talent!

Yes I remember watching the programme on TV and re-learned this song just last year! Would almost appear that the girl is taking the overhead down South; Crystal Palace, Sydenham, West Norwood! Remember the sound of the doors slamming hideously but enjoyed going up town past Battersea Power Station (RIP).

This song became famous in Britain in the early 1960s when it was used as the theme music for the tv series “It’s dark outside”. The song had nothing to do with the theme of the programme which a detective series. Although was just a child at the time I remember the programme and I have always loved the song. I don’t think this film clip was part of the series. The actress was Ann Lynn who bore a very slight resemblance to Jackie Trent.
@johnburns4017 Жыл бұрын
It was not the theme song to the TV series. It was played in episodes in the second series, aired March and April 1965. A throw away song in the background of some episodes recorded just for the series - they then did not have to pay big royalties for a well known song. Granada TV received many inquiries as to where to buy a recording, then it was released going straight to No. 1.

I remember this song from way back and listened to it often. The video reminds me of a love that I lost as Ann Lynn looks so much like her. Needless to say painful regret is in the air.

Me too. Never forgotten. Can't remember who played the victim, but Anthony Ainley took Keith Barron's spot as the sergeant. I travelled from Leicester to Bristol to buy the EP - it was all sold out everywhere else! Incidentally, I still have it.
@SpainHighlander7 жыл бұрын
You got me going on this now. I 'googled' it, and the full cast is on IMDB.....having taken a squint, I think the victim was a young and wimpish David Hemmings, who gets intimidated by Ollie and falls from a window at a party. Ring a bell ?
@bermudianabritain21397 жыл бұрын
Stewart Liebenstrudl That could have been - he's in the cast list. But the main victim was a young woman engaged to the the Anthony Ainley character (I remember AA so well because a few weeks later I went looking for a friend backstage in London and ran into him). The girl loves the song, and the murderer makes it look like suicide by leaving the record player playing the song on a loop. The things we remember!!

The song kind of sums up the year of 1965 for me when life was a lovely dream, life was much more gentle, fun, romantic and hopeful about the future. The culture was amazing, women were "ladies" and our men were respectful and so dashing. No one wore jeans..everyone dressed nicely and were well groomed and we didn't have to worry about which pronoun to address each other by. '65 was the ultimate year, oh, yes! Then everything collapsed.
