Answer, they went to work on other projects, as one punches animators aren't actually animators religated to a specific studio, they're freelancers, season 1 of one punch man was simply their passion project akin to a space dandy.
@forgottenrelics1197
@forgottenrelics1197 Ай бұрын
partially true, but not exactly, as there was at least 60+ key animators from other studios from names like Studio Khara, Trigger, Mu, and DR Movie for example. and even though some of these animators may have been freelancers at the time, a fair few big ones would join other studios or even make them in some cases. Such as Ryu Nakayama creating Andraft Inc. or Yoshimichi Kameda joining Studio Wit.

@@forgottenrelics1197 I'm not sure but I think that basically nowadays animators can be at same time working for a studio and free-lance on external projects? It's a bit like in the past was called a collaboration (although it actually still happens) but limited to one or a few numbers of artists. Probably I'm getting it all wrong, I dunno, it was a wild guess xD

@@AccelSternritter Sure, not everything has to be insane, but let's be real : When a first season delivers in such a stellar way that you feel like you just got offered a Lamborghini... then by season 2, SURPRISE MUDDAFUKKAZ ! It was a Volvo all along... You're kinda legitimately allowed to have some buyers remorse (the "buying" being the time of your life that you invested on the show, not just watching, but also raving about it... Think Game of Thrones, for example. From being touted as the best show in the history of television, raking in Emmys for the entire first 4 seasons... to a show NOBODY talks about nowadays after it ended, even by its stars, all of them, btw, having been catapulted by the show to superstardom, branching out to other pop culture classics like How to Train your Dragon, Star Wars, the MCU... only to all return to the void of darkness they all came from after season 8 ended... I mean, do you still remember the name of the actor who was Jon Snow for about 10 years ? Or Daenewhat's-her-name-again ?). Same goes for OPM. I remember the FEVER about it, with all of Twitter and Facebook (when it was still a thing) buzzing about it all around the planet. It was THE series that broke the bamboo ceiling and made anime cool for mainstream audiences, finally making them discover all the gems the industry had to offer. Fast forward 9 years later, after a lackluster s2 that was waited for 4 years, and a s3 that has been in limbo for yet another 4 years, and how many people are still talking about the show ? S1 was truly lightning in a bottle and it deserves to be remembered and celebrated as what it is : a milestone in the history of anime, assembling the dream team, the Avengers of the industry all together the time of one single season.

The breadcrumb trail of animators over time across different projects in the industry is such a complex and fascinating web of histories. Kudos for all your hard research! I really have been needing a reminder/compilation of all of this information to appreciate what at times feels like several missing pieces in the puzzle of "where did the animators of the best tv anime in history go"? These days with Bocchi the Rock, Chainsaw Man, Freiren, JJK and Ranking of Kings it feels like have far and away many new candidates for that "best tv animation" title question. But in the immediate aftermath of One Punch Man with shows like ACCA13 and Boogie pop (and with me being more ignorant) I really felt like what seemed like a black hole in the then-modern competition. It sucks how the industry has been squeezing talented animators ragged over the years. It does feel like (particularly recently) there have been much stronger/consistent animated works (Heavenly Delusion and Delicious in Dungeon being more stand outs for me). I don't know whether to applaud the work coming out of these conditions in spite of everything or continue to worry that this current bubble will burst. Has the industry showed signs of "figuring things out" or have animators just... adapted?

To be honest, after rewatching side-to-side the two, S2 isn't even terrible. As legions have said before, the matter is that the comparison with S1 disintegrates it xD. Sure it's got some jarring aesthetic choices, the general animation is worse, less cinematographic etc, but I think the real problem is that most of its directing is uninspired. I've seen a lot of early 00s and especially 90s anime, and a lot of them didn't have a giant amount of exceptional sakuga nor dynamic camera moves and similar, but the good ones developed directing styles that made the most out of animation cuts that were just good per se to elevate them. I think OPM S2 simply don't have that, else it would have been way easier to appreciate it and forgive the less stellar animation or the strange digital coloring choices. Just to give two very very small scale examples (cause I feel I'm talking in cryptic mumbo jumbo, sorry xD) 3 scenes come to my mind: the reveal of the Dragon Slayer sword and its fatal hit on Baron Mc Snakinson, Berserk 1997's first episode, and (but it's a bit more peculiar cause it's a show full of sakuga and great directing) the laser blast shot from Heavenly Delusion's episode 10 (which is literally NOT animated, and looks amazing nonetheless xD)

@@gurdimeikenskjaldi5060 I completely agree with you. Season 2 was cinematically BAD but animation wise it's not that bad, Season 3 trailer looked cinematic that's why it looked fabulous because now they have time. The main problem with season 2 was time.(I also liked season 2)

How do you think s3 will turn out? S2 suffered bcoz of the tight deadlines and alot of other factors. S3 most likely won't have those issues so I'm curious what level of quality we can expect from s3? We know Aoki is most likely gonna carry the season but there is just soo much action in the next arc that I doubt Aoki alone can do it. Really hope other freelancers join the production this time around but there are just way too many high profile anime being made currently that animators have to pick and choose on what they want to work on and I doubt most of them want to work with jc staff. Animators prefer to work on the shows that their friends are working on or someone invites them. Jc staff doesn't have that kind of influence or someone on team to invite group of freelancers as far as I know. Most of the freelancers will be busy on shows like csm, JJK, Dandadan, fate strange fake, Kameda's Yaiba and wit's one piece remake.

Honestly I'm not expecting anything out of the norm for shonen anime, but I don't believe it'll look as mediocre as the 2nd. At least going of the trailer the post-processing/colour design was a nice step up from the stale and airbrushed mess of the last season so even if this season isn't that animated, aesthetically it'll be an improvement at least. But yeah, as you mentioned talent is spread thin, even Chikashi Kubota despite reprising his role as character designer, has been very busy on Dragon Ball Daima and other Toei related works so unfortunately its unlikely he'll return as a chief animation director. Which sucks because you could really feel the lack of his presence in the 2nd. Although depending on who seasons 3 director is, you may see some interesting names? But again I'm not getting my hopes up. At the very least there were some skilled freelancers that popped up last season like Yen Bm, riooo and Julian Bentley who've really improved since then! So fingers crossed they might drop in for an episode or two.

Awesome video ! I'm myself working in the animation industry (not in Japan, though) and I've been wondering for years if it was possible to find a list of the Avengers of the anime industry (seriously felt that way for season 1, which is appropriate, since the series is about superheroes) who did the impossible task to assemble and create what was arguably the best season of anime of the entire decade of the 2010's (with maybe a notable exception for Mob Psycho). Thanks for putting in the effort for listing them all. Looking forward for part 2. Instant sub !

@@forgottenrelics1197 you're welcome, man ! I'm also very curious about how Shingo Natsume ended up being friends with all this hodgepodge of super soldiers, so that they would all answer his call for s1. Granted, the manga was awesome, so I get that they would all feel like this was the opportunity of a lifetime, but the simple fact that because he wasn't the director of s2, then almost none of them came back on it is also pretty telling of the Magneto level of pull this man has. What's their story together ? Did they all come from the same frat ?

@@jjstarrprod It's a mix. A large amount come through connections he formed when directing Space Dandy in 2014. He gave staff a lot of freedom and so many were keen to work under him again for OPM. With animators like Akira Amemiya he already was friends with Natsume back in the 2000s and I'm sure his time on Gurren Lagann would've given a few connections at Gainax/future Trigger staff. i go into in more depth about space dandy and how he for the team in this vid - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e5Nzlpmr3NKshYk.html

I think it's still one of the best animated series 10 years later. It is still my favorite in terms of direction and choreography and cinematography of the scenes. Also I knew some scenes in Season 2 were standing out as better than the rest. What lacks the most in season 2 is sound design and general direction and choreography. I'm sure the animators could do something good if the direction allowed to do so.

@@crestofhonor2349 For me personally, in terms of animation it would be either Seigasha or Cockpit at the top. After Hisashi Eguchi left there episodes never had a lot of animated movement. Seigasha on the other hand were consistent through the full run. If it was in the area of character art/drawings tho I might give Junio first place for the earlier arcs. All great studios at the end of the day!

OPM feels like peak manga/anime because the story is so simple and all the tropes are there, but it's so much deeper than just that what you see on the surface, between what's going on with Saitama and how the story shows the descent and ultimate climax of Garou.

Thanks for making this video. In the 1st minute alone, I already know it's not just cynical, senseless, heartless, freelance mercs from PMCs who hop from one set of corpses to another (and are also opressed by The Evil Society), the end. No, it's various very skilled people with meaningful histories who got together this once, and with difficulty, because they'd rather be doing different things at different places. It's a bunch of people aiming to drill through the sky, like when various key anime people got together to keep Gainax from blowing up as a business. I could watch a 1h version of this video and enjoy it (but do not make one).

Yeah, I wish people would stop seeing animation studios like a monolith/Single unchanging entity and start looking at the individuals working on the anime project. Like the amount of "Cloverworks was bad and now good" after Promised Neverland and Wonder Egg Priority, acting like it was a whole studio issue, not a "upper management" issue. Like the animation and quality itself didn't become bad, but now they're praising hell off Bisque Doll, Bochi the Rock and now Elusive Samurai for unique animations.
