Where Do Bass Go During The Fall Transition? ( And How To Catch Them )

Fall is fast approaching! If your fish are starting to disappear and you don't know why, you're not alone! As the nights get cooler the bass fishing changes over night. Bass transition toward their Fall patterns and many anglers are left wondering what happened. We're here to help!
The Fall Transition comes much earlier than most anglers realize. Its not a slow progression either, in most situations, bass will begin their movements overnight. One day you're on an awesome topwater bite, the next you can't find a fish. When this happens its time to step back and look at what is motivating these fish to move. Whether you're targeting shallow bass or deep, the bass' next movement is motivated by the baitfish's location. As the bait begins to gather, so will the bass.
If your fish are out deep, expect them to begin gathering on the best structures. Expect to find them on corners of creek channel bends, along long tapering points that break to deep water, and later you can expect them to transition toward the backs of deep coves. Shallow fish will abandon the scattered weeds in favor of thick weed clumps and hard structure. As the seasons progress these fish will begin bunching up along ambush points and pockets.
Below is a breakdown of the gear we recommend using during these conditions. We've included rigging components where applicable and even included our favorite colors for each technique. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Dude I used to never catch fish but I just loved to be on the water and throw baits around, but now I’m actually catch fish and I caught my pb 6pound bass because of what I’ve learned from just watching a few videos. I’m only 14 and all I think about is how I can learn to catch more fish and when the next time I can go fish is. Thank you so much man, please keep making these videos, and I love you for all the help I got from you

I just wanted to thank you and Matt for what you do! I know there are hundreds of pros that do videos, but following you guys has never led me wrong. I’m a 60 year old man with an aluminum boat and no electronics I just use what you guys tell me where you tell me to. I keep a log with date water temp, conditions and number caught. So far this year I’ve caught 132 SM, LM and spots just doing what you guys tell me. Id never caught a fish on a swim bait and this year I’ve caught 46! I’ve never caught a 4 pounder but I caught a 3.14 on a swimbait. I appreciate you guys and I never miss an episode, so keep on doing it!

I’ve followed y’all for about 5 years now. Because of your videos (this year) I have been able to stay on top of this fall transition. Thank you Tim and Matt! It’s truly awesome to see everything that I’ve learned from you guys come to play. I understand summer is coming to an end but one thing I’ve been kinda playing with is night fishing for large mouth/spots. Any tips are always appreciated. I’ll always follow! I watch every video! Keep doing what your doing and hope to meet one day! Much love! 🤙

The grass doesn’t die from the cold. It dies from lack of light due to the fall solstice losing light. The fish also know we lose light, it’s not just the cold that sets the transition

same with trees, its a common misconception that the weather triggers trees to lose their leaves. i fairly north, and some of the trees are already losing their lush green color, and the grass is mostly dead or dying. its been fairly tough fishing.

Definitely started up north here in Ontario Canada. Summer patterns flipped overnight basically. One day I was at the local pond fishing the pads catching them, now it’s choke points. They’re just hanging out picking off baitfish when they feel like it.

Green oxygenated grass or plants are key. Last fall bite in late November, the only fish found shallow for me were still relating to whatever grass was left. Even if its not living, it's cover for them to hide in. Toss at the greenery.

Here in WV we’ve had a pretty average summer, mid to high 80’s with a day or two in the low 90’s. I went yesterday morning (9/5) throwing a Trick Shad at first light using it like a wake bait and caught several. I’m always amazed by how small some of the fish are ? A trick shad is around 7” and have caught bass 10”-12” 😂 but they hit it like a tank !!

My problem right now is not finding the fish- it's getting them to bite. I watched huge bass swim all around my bait yesterday- they acted scared of it. I finally got a couple to fire on a popper, but that was it. I'm not used to this- usually, if I'm around the fish I can catch a few- but these fish have lock jaw. I threw everything I could think of at them- Shaky heads, T rigs, spinner baits, swim baits, glide baits, under spins, wacky rig, - they wouldn't touch anything I threw. I did finally get a couple to hit a popper- but that was all I could get. I wanted to go back this morning and try them again, but it didn't work out. Probably be Friday before I can go again.

The N Texas lake I fish is deep. The water temp is 87 so basically peak level. After 6 straight hours zero bass bites on various plastics last weekend, I pulled out my newly aquired BFS rig out of desperation and immediately started catching bass on a MR Griffon stationed off the the bank in 15 of water casting toward the bank. The fish were small but the fun factor spiked 100%. This seems to echo what Matt is saying here about fish transitioning to more of a bait chasing mode despite the high temps still reaching 100+ almost daily. It might have just been a right place / right time thing, but I have a new confidence for the MR Griffon. Expensive bait but that little dude fired em up when nothing else seemed to work. And if you fish it (or the Karashi), be hyper cautious with the tiny hooks. Those suckers are crazy sharp and will rapidly sink deep into anything they come into contact with like your fingers or clothing.

Heading to Arkansas tomorrow to figure Bull Shoals out for the next month and a half. Hopin those walleye and big bass will be smackin jerkbaits...thats my fav.! Bought another screen for the front of the boat so my aging eyes dont have to strain. 👀 😂 They should start pushing bait to pockets before too long, and the secondary points should turn on pretty well, I hope...lol.

People underestimate the effect shorter days, with less sunlight have on many different things in nature including water temps, fish, trees, animals....may be 90 degrees, but that less sunlight a day cools things down quite a bit.....if u see this Tim, what about gravel pits with grass? Last couple weeks, it's been the dead sea....no hard cover anywhere....im almost convinced the bass moved out of state, due to inflation

I've been ABSOLUTELY STRUGGLING during this transition. I know where the bait balls are I see bass blowing up on them. I'll throw chatterbates, spinnerbaits, square bill and lipless crank baits, jerk baits, top water poppers in bait fish profile. I have profiles that will match size of bait fish in size and color, and from one extreme to the other. I CANNOT GET MY BEST TO BITE. I'll throw my lures in, around, and through. Schools of big fish that are getting blown up and still no success. It's rather frustrating. Please help me out here.

I’d like to start out with I almost never leave a negative comment pretty much a walk away and say nothing but I am so fed up with your videos your Contant, and by all means your favorite every day US put it on a video and tell about your favorite Luer do you realize it changes every effing day are you paid attention to your production? Congratulations I’m sure you’re making a good living or asking please if you have any and tell us change up your favorite my Lord do you know what it says to people when you say every day you have when you say every day you have a Favorites and it’s different that means everything that your favorite is trash and I can’t I can’t rely on you I’d love to trust you, but when everything’s a favorite, but you’re not trustable good luck
