There's a difference between talking about suicide and glorifying suicide as a way to get revenge on the people who wronged you.
@iBarkBite

I don’t think the point of the show or book was to say that she unalived herself to get revenge on them. I think that’s not the best way to listen to what’s being said. They’re saying those are the factors that contributed to her not liking her life and thinking it’s be easier to just be gone

and then leaving tapes explicitly blaming specific people for her mental health struggles which places the onus for her actions on the shoulders of those people. there are ways to portray such difficult and sensitive topics without devolving into a revenge fantasy.

@@chunglu, it seems like suicide as written by someone who meticulously planned, but never carried out, a suidice. (I say that as someone who was a writer and meticulously planned a suicide.) @SpiralSkylines

I disagree, just because it strayed away from the original material doesn’t mean that it got worse. Nothing was much worse writing wise than the first season, and a lot of it got better. All of that with the exception of Season 3, which is a pretty shit season outside of Bryce. Bryce alone though made Season 3 worth a watch and I would rewatch all the other seasons before ever watching the first one again.

@@dimthecat9418 Terrible acting in comparison to what and according to who? Terrible writing, what do you write? That way I can get a good perspective on what you consider good writing and I can go from there. Looked bland? What does that mean? The color grading? It’s a depressing high school television series, it’s not going to be vibrant. The cinematography? It’s mostly shot in indoor establishments. I have no clue what kind of exotic shots you’re wanting it to have, especially considering it has very little action scenes. Glorifying is a word that I assume all of you that use it have just learned because you’ve heard others say it. It’s not glorifying anything, especially not a rapist.. that’s the most bizarre one I’ve heard lol. Elaborate a bit more on that one please, if not anything else. It’s okay that it’s not your thing, but I’ve never understood the glorifying thing that people come up with. Even after multiple rewatches, not once have I noticed it glorying anything that’s considered negative.

@@SpiralSkylines I haven’t watched it in a while so I can’t remember some specifics. Bad writing in terms of the cartoonish remarks characters would give each other. No one speaks like they’re actually high schoolers and instead it’s obviously written by people who don’t understand kids. Or bad writing in terms of plot. So many unnecessary twists and turns that were obviously there just to keep the show going. Like how clays family adopted Kevin (or whatever his name was), or those random protests at schools, or how the characters in the show are too stupid the report Tyler for attempted mass murder. The acting is particularly bad with how clay can only make this stone face devoid of emotion or that over the top friend of Tyler’s. Or even how Bryce tries to act like he’s cool but it really just looks like he’s reading prepared remarks. Glorifying in that even after Bruce died they tried to gain sympathy for him with terribly unnecessary scenes. Or the explicit scenes of Hannah doing it or what happened to Tyler. There wasn’t any subtlety. S~~~~~~ rates for teens literally went up after this show. You still beee good cinematography in a drama, it was mostly just shot reverse shot, or when they got creative it was just stupid with this weird transitions that didn’t fit at all. But the cinematographer was actually pretty good in season one, just not the rest. If you like it cool but I think it only exists for moody teenagers
@SpiralSkylines
@SpiralSkylines 3 жыл бұрын
@@dimthecat9418 There’s no way I’m going to respond to all of it, or most of it actually. Writing is subjective (to a certain extent), your opinion is fine. However, I disagree heavily that they didn’t talk like how high schoolers talked lol. This was the most high school high school that has ever high schooled. Most of what you said didn’t make sense to me. I don’t know some of the instances you’re talking about because they never happened. Anyways, about the cinematography, nothing changed as far as shooting went between the seasons? There were cool shots in there, but the script very clearly was the most important thing about this show. Also, who’s Kevin? Lol. And Dylan Minnete’s acting is bad? On what planet? The big thing, that’s not what glorifying means, at all. They never tried to denounce anything Bryce. Having a well written character and continuing to further that character is not glorification. Also, there are rapist and murderers in real life, and they do change for the better. People that recognize that change aren’t glorifying them, nor are they forgiving them for the actions they did. I think you have “glorifying rape” mixed up with something like “bringing awareness to rape situations”. They also never glorified scide (meaning they never made it look like a good thing) before you bring that up. It’s the your choice to watch, read, or listen to something that might effect your mental health. If those teens/kids watched the show unsupervised, then you can’t blame the showrunners. It’s essentially the same argument that “video games causes violent tendencies in kids, blah blah blah”, no. The game didn’t cause anything that wasn’t there already.

This show actually helped inspire a few kids to actually commit suicide. The problem with this show is that it glorifies suicide whether it knows it or not. A suicidal person might find comfort in knowing that all the bad people in their life would know how they made them feel and feel bad about what they have done. It's essentially saying committing suicide will make you heard and it will make people understand what they have done and feel guilty. Which is what a suicidal person might want. Sadly in reality I don't think anyone would even care to listen to these tapes or take responsibility.

I like the fact that you seem to approach this series with a very open mind. Personally I cant watch the series because 1. Im just done with High School 2. I dont buy or like Hannah and her holier than thou victim narrative 3. I dont like suicide being portrayed as a way to get revenge, or get empathy from the crowd. If you leave a tape most likely someone's gonna give it away, or throw out once they're finished. Personally, when it comes to discussing suicide, instead of justifying it, why not show that you can seek help, or that it is a lot more common than you think.

thinking suicide is something to justify or not is.. interesting, but on your last point: they did show that you can seek help, and they showed that sometimes the "authority figures" you seek help from fail you and that's literally often the case in real life bc ppl think you're exaggerating to garner sympathy (for attention), playing the victim etc. so basically all the things you just mentioned but don't realize you did. the first season doesn't in any way say that one's doomed, if anything it calls for people to be the help you're referring to *precisely because* it's more common than you think. i guess holier than thou victim narrative is when you talk about the sexual harassment, assaults, rape, vilification (courtney for exemple), isolation you endured coupled with the weight of your own mistakes that lead you to not want to be alive anymore...?

I think that the biggest problem with this series is that it's not confident enough about its premise. A few episodes in there's already the classic topics trying to increase what it at stake for the finale and ends up being a pretty generic mess. Which is sad, because as you pointed out, it is very good at showing how did it feel to be a teenager, and that could help a lot of family, specially parents that might not understand the experience of their kids

Personally I find this show to be very comforting because I have dealt with suicidal feelings and a lot of attempt at suicide throughout my life like ever since I was 11 basically and to see a show portray that and showing how bad it affects everyone around you it gives me a lot of comfort in it makes me feel happy. And I get upset when I see people putting shit on the show because I don't think people understand the point that the show was trying to get across, like the show was not made to take suicide and present it to you in a nice and friendly way, this show is supposed to feel heartbreaking and it's not supposed to be easy to watch because it's showing the truth of the real world and the life of most teenagers. A lot of people saying that it caused their mental illnesses are just like you need to seek a bit more help and do a search for more information because if a show is the cause of your suicidal thoughts and your mental illnesses then that means that they were always there this show just made you realize it which is good so now you know what's wrong with you and you can get the help that you need but you can't blame a show for your mental illnesses and your thoughts. That is show made a very very clear warning of what this show was going to go over and the topics that it talked about and the scenes that it contained so I'm sorry to break this to you but the only person blame is yourself. You continue watching the show even though you knew what the show was about you seen the warnings and then you're going to get angry at the show and try to blame it for all of your issues after like that's like someone telling me that their food taste bad and then you're like okay so you take the food and you're angry that it's bad like you knew that it tasted bad why are you angry. 😐

I think this show was meant more for parents than teenagers. I was depressed when I was a teenager and ended up being hospitalized because I was going to end my life. I hid it for years and no one was able to see it, even though I physically harmed myself. Finally I just couldn’t take it anymore and luckily my mom saw one of my meltdowns and got me the help I needed. This show most likely would’ve been too much for me back then but the problems were already there, so it would’ve been my fault if it had made things worse. But now, as an adult, I can look back at those times and understand how vulnerable teenagers are. Their brains haven’t developed enough to think how their actions might effect the people around them, and I think this show is a good reminder of that. Parents often forget how teenagers think, especially because their kids don’t need them the same way they did when they were little, and don’t see the difference in their kid’s behavior or think it’s just “that age and it will pass”. I know parents that started to ask their kids how they are really doing more often than before and paying more attention to them after watching this show. Many people seem to think the tapes were Hannah’s revenge, but I think it was her way of trying to prevent those bad things that happened to her, happening to others. She probably wanted to make them see how their actions have consequences, and you can hear her say that those people most likely didn’t even realize what they were doing to her. So, in my opinion, I don’t think Hannah was selfish or wanted to have a revenge, and I don’t think the show was romanticizing suicide as much as people say it does. It’s just not meant for kids and teenagers, or people with serious mental health issues. Yes, there were parts where even I had to hit pause and take a break, but now I know better how to handle things and what’s too much for me. I wouldn’t have been able to do that when I was younger and it would’ve made my situation even worse. My mom watched this show and we actually had a long conversation about my teenage years and struggles because she started to understand how I thought back then. She also asked me if I was ever sexually assaulted and I was finally able to tell her that I was. She just didn’t know how often that happens among teenagers so she never really thought it was a possibility. If she had watched 13 reasons back then, I’m pretty sure she would have seen earlier that something was wrong with me. This comment is way too long so I’ll shut up now and show myself out.

0:39 my friend took his life about a year ago (its funny how much has happened in a year by the way) he was only 16 his name is Timmy, anyways I remember going to school and all the teachers had this stupid little paper they were reading from word for word, some people seemed kinda upset but then it just moved on like a normal school day, even many of those close to him just moved on so fast like it was nothing, like he didn't even exist, I remember how angry I was about that, but I guess that's just the way the world is, things happen and you gotta be able to move on, I'm still shaken up by his death, it took at least 3 months before I could even stop crying uncontrollably at night when I laid down for bed, the funniest thing is, I wasn't nearly as close to him as most of my other friends were, and yet I was having more trouble moving on than a lot of them seemed to be having, I was so angry at him for killing himself, I told my best friend one time while we were talking about him, and he actually said something that sort of opened my eyes, on one hand what he said made me even more mad to be honest but on the other, it made me understand why he did what he did and just how much he was suffering, Timmy had really bad Schizophrenia, he thought everyone was out to get him, he only trusted a select few and even those his mind would fuck with him about, he acted like he was super happy and jolly on the surface, he was always laughing and smiling and never failed to bring a smile or laugh to those around him, it was like his attitude was contagious you couldn't be around him and not feel good...but in reality he was anything but happy under the surface, he was suffering, he didn't have the support systems he needed, whole family dabbled in pot, he took it up at a fairly early age as a way to deal with how he was feeling, in some ways it helped, in many ways it amplied what he was going through and only distorted reality even further for him, he was suffering, we knew this, but we're just stupid kids, we didn't know what to do, who to go to, how to get him the help he needed, he was suffering, and my friend stated this and then he told me, as fucked up as it is, and as much as we miss him, what he was going through was too much for him to handle, and I shouldn't be mad at him for what he did, because he only did it because he was hurting, and he's not suffering anymore, at the very least he's not in pain, I just sat there silently at the lunch table, part of me wanted to punch my friend and call him a dumbass, and tell him that, that's bullshit, and that all Timmy did was dump all of that pain onto those who cared about him and made them hurt in his stead, but another part of me understand what he was saying, and I felt bad, I felt bad because I was only thinking about me, I wasn't thinking about Timmy and what he was going through, I still don't know what the right answer to what my friend said that day would've been, I still don't understand fully just how I feel about Timmy and what he did. I wish he had the support he needed, I wish we knew what to do and did it, there are so many things I wish could've been different but time moves on whether you move with it or not, the simple fact is that there is no going back and redoing it, it's permanent, and I'm not doing Timmy or anyone any favors by holding onto the past and lingering on what could've or should've been done

I read the book among others covering suicide when I was a teen. It can help to normalize these feelings and combat the feeling that suicide is a solution to your problems. I love that a mental health professional is discussing this show despite the criticisms people have made about it.

I know this series has gotten a lot of criticism, but my sister and I enjoyed at least the first season. The part that spoke to me was how Hannah's mind was really on a different track that affected the way she perceived and reacted to everything. It helped me have a lot of empathy for times when people I know are very emotionally charged and acting in irrational ways.

13 Reasons Why reminds me of Itte, a Japanese song (you can look it up on youtube, it has English subtitles). It talks about someone who has lost a close person to suicide. Even though it sounds incredibly cheerful, it talks about the self-blame that comes after something this tragic. It's incredible.

Tried watching this, but couldn’t get behind the concept of the show, which seems to focus on how the people that were mean to Hannah at one point or another and which she blames for her death are impacted by her suicide and now have to carry the burden of her death. Unless a person is close family or really touches our lives deeply, we humans are an amazingly resilient bunch and unfortunately (or fortunately) are able to get over the death of people in our general surroundings really rather quickly and … life simply moves on without that person. The idea that you can hurt somebody with your death is … aggravating, presumptuous and childish and, outside of your close family, it’s just not likely to have that effect. Living is the better revenge.

I read the book back in high school, after I had been r*ped and was very alone, very suicidal, etc.. the book was comforting, I suppose. But I was 14 and had yet to experience things even worse. So, when the show came out when I was about 24 (a decade after my first r*pe), I first watched it and didn't know what to think at first. I was withdrawing from heroin, still suicidal, and living in an abusive environment, so it wasn't an ideal time to watch a very triggering show. I think the show could have done well, without the graphic scenes for shock value. Euphoria, BoJack Horseman, Mr. Robot, and lots of other shows have been able to portray addiction, mental illness, and suicidality without making it seem like the issues were just there to up the stakes of the story. Looking back now (and still being suicidal, as it is pretty chronic for me to have passive suicidal thoughts) on the show, they really could have done better. It could have been a really great show. I know there have been countless video essays/articles written about it now, but whenever this show comes up, I can't help but wish they would have listened to the advice they were given. The show could have potentially been something completely different if they had.

I agree talking about suicide is very helpful and doesn’t increase risk but this is different, whether they wanted to or not they clearly painted suicide as a way to make people remember you or regret what they did and we are also talking about a population that is already very well known for socially contagious mental health conditions.

What Hannah really reminds me of is what Nietzsche said about martyrdom and suicide. He believed that it's the result of a person's desire for power over others outstripping the will to live. The martyr is loved and honored by their people and their actions are held up as an example of virtue that influences the future behavior of others. Some people want to have that kind of influence so badly they don't even care whether they'll be around to enjoy it.

I think it would be helpful if we as a society make an effort to normalize the phrase "I didn't see any of the signs" over "they didn't show any signs". I'm convinced that in most of those cases, there *are* signs, but they're just really, really hard to see to the untrained eye and sometimes even hard to see to trained eyes. I think that changing the phrase puts more emphasis on our capacity to learn to recognize the signs, instead of just brushing off the responsibility by sort of implicitly and backhandedly "blaming" the victim for "not showing any signs". Of course it's not helpful if we start blaming ourselves, we need to be able to forgive ourselves for not seeing the signs. Otherwise we won't be able to move on and learn from it. But I would like it if we become a society where we have more of an eye for each other and look out for each other. I've been struggling with what I call euthanasia thoughts for about 10 years - I call them that because I never have the thought of ending it right here and now, but rather just taking it slow and think about the decision and doing it 'officially' and give people time to say goodbye etc. It's a really long slide to the bottom. Has been for me, and has been for most people who've been suicidal that I've talked to. You usually don't become suicidal overnight. Usually people have been through loads of options until they see dying as the only one left. I don't think it's about signs that much in the first place, I think it's more about realizing how important it is for every single human being to feel safe (both physically and mentally, so that includes stuff like not being laughed at or judged harshly etc.), to feel loved, to feel seen, to feel understood, to feel connected. There's a huge difference between superficial friends you go out to party with, andtrue connections that make you feel seen and validated, where you feel safe, people you can trust to be yourself around. There's also loads of research showing that making sure ex-addicts are properly integrated into a welcoming and loving community are FAR less likely to relapse into their addictions than people who are more or less left to fend for themselves and discriminated against because they're an ex-addict. The true way forward isn't punishment, or shame and embarrassment, or judgment. The true way forward is love and connection.

I wish we could’ve gotten more of a grey area with 13 reasons why as while they initially hint at Hannah not being objectively truthful they really only make it into semantics and ultimately blaming everyone for her decision to end her own life. While there is an argument for how others can contribute adding stress to someone’s life, or if they cause explicit trauma leading to ptsd (as with the specific ptsd inducing bit with Bryce), hyper rationalization of why someone may do such a thing to themself I don’t think is always helpful. Suicide can just as often be a matter of the worst result from being depressed with outside factors just not helping or warping into the worst case scenario - as does depression do to our sense of reality. So if with the grey area stuff, in which others had their own thoughts and emotions playing into their decisions that are also valid, if they had more of a separation between Hannah’s reality and possibly catastrophizing as an example versus others it could’ve made more more interesting explorations. A peice to display the deeper disconnects between how a healthy mind versus someone who is spiraling can separate in how they perceive things. That and removing direct blame, especially from characters here who didn’t really deserve it because that kind of narrative hurts people who are grieving from a similar tragedy, who probably blame themselves already. Again not saying the mindset can’t be explored on feeling like that, but justifying and saying “yes that is the correct assumption - defiantly 100% on you why she committed suicide” just doesn’t sit well with me. Going through the blame, how even the person contemplating suicide may even rationalize their suicide to have some belief or reason to justify it to themselves, but then flip it on it’s head, have someone she hated apologize and make amends and show it’s deeper than surface level issues. That even when reconciling she still is feeling this pain. That it has no rational basis. Because if it did, that leads to the assumption to say people should just be able to talk someone out of feeling suicidal (not the act in the moment but the whole feeling/ideation), or you can think your way out of wanting to end your own life and that’s just not how it works.

I think even calling a show about suicide “13 reasons why” undermines the senseless agony of those who really do suffer with a depressive disorder. In real life it would be called “1 reason why” and the reason would simply be “I couldn’t tolerate the suffering of existence anymore.” There is no true reason for suicide, at its core it is an avoidant behavior that people use to avoid the inherent pain of their existence when it becomes unbearable, that is the nature of mental illness that there is no reason it just happens.

One of my favorite shows for sure, definitely in my top 10. Never had suicidal thoughts or tendencies, but I did lose my bestfriend to suicide at a young age, 13, the summer before freshman year. I guess any age is “too young” to lose someone in that way... regardless though, I related to some of the characters a lot. As a screenwriter and author, I do love the show, despite how some others complain about the writing. I haven’t gotten a real sense of high school in a show for a while before this came out. It came out right in the middle of my high school years year.

It was rough to watch, but my therapist did help me work on my remembered thoughts and feelings of my childhood attempts to end it all. I suggest that if you have suicidal thoughts, find a good therapist and work on your issues. Friends and family are great, but even if they are trained mental health professionals, they are too close to the situation to be truly objective.

The show shouldn't be criticised for talking about suicide, it should be under the lens for how terribly its doing it. It doesn't play Hanna to be the victim the way it thinks it does, it plays Hanna as being unaware of some seriously deep mental issues she's having, and glorification focus on bullies. Her reaction and action to situations doesn't feel organic-nowhere near average behavior, but never mentions a possible history of her mental health. It makes me question how healthy she is for young teens to see. She becomes an actual victim, but it comes off as if she only cares because others should care. As if commiting suicide is a chore or "her burden" to get revenge on her bullies. She definitely is not the average-example, but they play her off as if she is. I don't know if its the actor or a directive or script problem, but there are things about Hanna that doesn't make sense, and the show feels like it does go for some shock value. A very small example: The way she talks in the tapes is like she's doing a cool podcast. She sounds cocky, and it furthers the glorification of revenge on bullies instead of supporting and helping your own mental health. I'm truly glad if people watch this and feel less alone, but in my eyes it is one of the most unhealthy examples you could find today.

God I hate this show… i remember watching it for the first time as a 13 year old in 2017. I had never in my life experienced depression or any other mental illness. I had trauma but it was buried so it didn’t even bother me. But I had never even felt a truly truly bad emotion other than normal sadness.. but when I turned 15 I fell into a deep depression, and I wanted to commit. So at this time everything about suicide intrigued me, so I started to watch the show again, and the new seasons that had come, and god did it trigger me. The first time I watched it as 13 I thought wow so this is how depression is, and this is how suicide works. But it mostly isn’t. I am 17 now I am diagnosed with depression, ptsd and 3 other anxiety disorders. And watching this show is really triggering, to especially my depressed self, and my ptsd. The show makes Hannah commit suicide to take revenge on the people that hurt her, but for most people (me including) commits/wants to commit because they feel like a burden, that their life has no meaning, that nothing will change and many other reasons, but the reason why so many suicidal people don’t commit, is because they don’t want to hurt anyone, or make them feel guilty. I just think this show is messed up, her motive for her suicide was VERY wrong in my opinion. The only thing I liked abt this show was clays reaction at first, it was the realest part, other than that I hope no kid ever puts on this show without knowing it’s like 90% bullshit.

What a terrible series. They claim this was meant to be a show about suicide awareness, but no-it was a show that glorified suicide, portraying it as something glamorous, and an opportunity for one to live on after suicide. I mean the character's suicide becomes this whole revenge fantasy, and doesn't even focus on the premise of underlying issues - i.e. mental health. We all need to treat one another better, yes, but a person cannot get better if core issues and trauma are not dealt with. (Netflix even originally showed the scene where she kills herself, in graphic detail. And they eventually removed it because there was so much outrage.) And then eventually, the show wasn't about suicide at at all. The writers tried to cram as many teen issues as possible into the show. And for each season their aim was to create as much shock value as possible. Disclaimer: I have struggled with suicide, PTSD, severe depression, addiction, and have been sexually assaulted numerous times. So I can say with certainty that this series does more harm than good.

I think Hannah is too sensitive. In fact, some things she experienced at first were not particularly bad. In order to integrate these people, she accidentally pushed herself into the abyss of bullying. And I think Clay should not be put into the tapes , because Clay is like a back up for her from the beginning to the end, looking for comfort after she is frustrated. Is it only me who feels that Clay is most worthy of sympathy? He has nothing to do with these shits.
