Snot is basically produced by the mucous membrane present in our nose. Usually, it is prepared in small amounts. However, when we have a cold or flu, the mucous membrane produces excess snot which eventually comes out of our nostrils. Although it seems gross, but this snot is our body’s first line of defense against infections. So, let’s see how it works.
Firstly, the snot contains proteins called mucins. Mucins give our snot its gel-like properties, helping it trap germs, dust, etc. and thus preventing them from entering deeper into our body. Also, sometimes bacteria clump together, forming a harmful biofilm. But the mucins found in our snot bind to these bacteria and increase their motility. As a result, bacteria don’t clump together, rendering them less dangerous. Lastly, snot also contains antibodies, antimicrobial peptides, etc. which help kill germs, thus keeping us healthy.
