Richard Hammond is visiting the construction of the massive 55-kilometre-long Brenner Base Tunnel in Austria. The 20-year-long project is estimated to produce 21 million cubic metres of rubble, but where does it go?

Actually not a bad idea. You want to pay shipping? I do wonder why they need to dump it so close to the tunnel project though, there will be a rail line in the end so I figure they ought to just build the rail line early on then ship it out by train to customers who can use it (though probably not as far away as the Netherlands).

@@quillmaurer6563 I think this is an access tunnel for work. The mining is done in several places at once otherwise it would take to line. And part of the rubble is used as foundation for the railroad. But most important role of such a dumping site is you can keep digging without worrying about your concrete plant or delivery to other projects cannot manage it. And then you have the potential political problem of putting every gravel producer in the Alps out of business.
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 4 жыл бұрын
@@barthoving2053 I understand the re-use of rubble for concrete, and building an on-site concrete plant, but why do they do that inside the tunnel in a cavern rather than outside at the entrance? I guess political issues with other gravel companies could be a factor - usually when something that doesn't make sense is happening it's because of politics or rules. Though even that I could see being solved with some cooperation - give the gravel to the gravel companies to haul away and sell, they can still sell gravel without having to dig it up, still makes more sense than dumping it in one place while mining it in another.

@dr.z1657
@dr.z1657 4 жыл бұрын
@@maxi-g I wasn't being facetious. Here's something I wrote to another viewer who was concerned about the potential danger: "It sounds like they’ve learned from the Aberfan disaster. Lithologically speaking, the limestone and volcanic substrate being excavated here is inherently more stable (thermally and structurally) than something like coal slurry from anthracite refuse, as was the case in Aberfan. Placement of refuse tips within the bases of valleys (which they are doing here-as opposed to on slopes or high ground as was the case in Aberfan) is standard practice and is generally safe. They also seem to be conscious of ensuring adequate water drainage, and spreading the tailing in a manner that creates more surface area than tip height. Although they plan to make the tip 140 meters in height, I’m sure that height will be distributed across a large surface area in the form of a mesa rather than a heap. In addition to the drainage measures, their plans to replant the natural fauna will also help to protect against soil erosion. So, this is not something to be too worried about. Sounds like they’ve thought it through."

Italy + EU needs that tunnel badly. The current traffic during the summer is intense. Lot's of people and trucks in a narrow road. To avoid day traffic many people drive at night on the famous Brenner road in the background of the video. That's how Italy exports products to North Europe. Also, there is a train.
@axelstoerckle7295
@axelstoerckle7295 3 жыл бұрын
Rather depends on what you mean by North Europe. It will be the fastest route between Palermo and Berlin, but it isn't dominant on all routes. On of the most important cargo corridors in Europe is still between Bologna and Rotterdam. This corridor sends the train through the Gotthard base tunnel (the currently longest tunnel) and afterwards to the Rhine valley in Germany/France. However, the Swiss/Italians/Austrian all have one common problem when it comes to augmenting the capacity on their much needed cargo corridors: it is Germany. For the Swiss it is the Rhine valley, where they should have been finished building the third and fourth track years ago and for the Austrians it is the Inn valley, where they are still debating, uf they should even build two more tracks. It is really annoying to see such massive project just partially fail, because of one weak link in a chain. And it isn't like there isn't enough money; both projects are partially financed by the EU and Switzerland, as there is a big interest in augmenting the capacity.
@KuruGDI
@KuruGDI 3 жыл бұрын
True that but if you don't force them to take the route the HGVs will not use the train as long as driving is cheaper.
@axelstoerckle7295
@axelstoerckle7295 3 жыл бұрын
@@KuruGDI absolutely. That's why Switzerland and Austria have several laws that encourage cargo companies to use the train way more often. In Switzerland for example, you aren't allowed to drive a truck between 22:00 and 6:00 on the motorway, unless you're transporting perishable goods or are from the postal service. That's also partly the reason why we haveway less problems with all those Polish or Hungarian truckers. (But also because, if an employer hires someone from another country, they are forced to pay the workers a minimum wage, which is typically about 10-20% lower than for a Swiss employee, but there will be a lot more checking, if things go right, so it is often not lucrative to hire foreigners in Switzerland.)

If this was in Britain; well first we'd never actually start any big project like this because our government doesn't do infrastructure... but if we did, we'd probably ship it all off to Malaysia and dump it on a beach.

The way they try to describe the amount of material is a bit odd. Just keep in mind a million cubic meters is just a cube of 100m edge length. A lot of material, but maybe not as much one might think.

The problem with that is we would just start comparing it to similar structures, maybe a skyscraper. But keep in mind those are hollow, while the cube isn't. While it might be easy to imagine a 100x100x100 cube, I think the true amount of material in that cube is a bit beyond humn comprehension

And eventually this place will have rail access, being a train tunnel. Would make sense to me to build the rail line early on and ship it out by train to customers who can use it. I'd guess that them not doing so is indication that for some reason, maybe type of rock, it's not something of any economic value. But they are using it in concrete, so it must be at least somewhat usable.

Thank you!!! Although I will say construction projects, though there’s exceptions of course, don’t ever want to buy fill and will just use what they got from elsewhere on the site. Even then, why rework Mother Nature when you can literally print money selling it off to concrete manufacturers, pavement manufacturers, etc. It’s wasteful and dangerous given what happens when man plays Mother Nature on this gran a scale 😬

It sounds like they’ve learned from the Aberfan disaster. So, this is not something to be too worried about, but you are wise to have recognized the danger this could present.
