-A public trial would be embarrassing, painful - not only for myself, but for also for British intelligence and Admiral Rolland. -Perhaps.. but not as painful as that long drop to the end of the rope. My father borrowed this book from library in 1969, and it should have been returned by january 1970. I still have the book.

In the novel, just before Turner jumps out of the plane Schaffer remarks: “Mind the step.” Too bad that line wasn’t used in the movie: one can easily imagine Eastwood delivering it in his usual quiet, under-stated manner.

A great film. Clint must have felt thrilled to work with Richard Burton. The only trouble I have with the ending (and the whole film for that matter) is that all of the actors appear impossibly well groomed. Clint and Burton dressed in immaculate uniforms generally reserved for formal affairs. Neither man even needs a shave although they've just spent many hours behind enemy lines. And the girl? Looks like she just came off of a Hollywood designer's runway. With Cosmopolitan Magazine photographers shooting the whole scene. It would have been much better had the men looked scruffier and the girl looking like a cheap whore.

Saw the movie twice over in 2 days on Amazon Prime and that too on rent. I had watched it earlier about 3 years ago and suddenly felt the urge to see it again. This movie is certainly one of the top 5 greatest ever World War 2 movies. The Great Escape, Guns of Navarone, Dunkirk, Enemy at the Gates are all in the same league as this one. Simply brilliant.

In the novel, the traitor throws the books out the window, but Smith tells him he has duplicate copies. The guy jumps from the plane rather than face public shame, an immediate court marshal " with arrest, death by hanging by 8 o'clock in the dawn." ! Mary and Smith arrange for a legal wedding upon landing. Heidi and Schaffer /Eastwood make plans to go out and have a steak dinner in a fancy London restaurant even though people in London were eating horsemeat due to war time food shortages which she reminds him of but he tells her that's ok but he never likes horses because he always falls off them, anyway . The novel thus presents 2 love stories so there is a Happy Ending in that sense though in the movie only Mary and the wise James Bond like Major Smith hook up .Great novel , very good movie.

True story: Burton's alcoholism was so out of control at this stage of his life he could barely stand. A lot of the shots of him were made to look like he was standing when he was actually sitting or propped up. a Stunt double was used for other shots. He still finished the film and knocked it out of the park.

QUESTION: If we assume the firing pin on Col. Turner's STEN hadn't been "removed" (read: filed off) and Turner in fact had killed Smith, Schaefer and the women, what was he planning to tell the pilot by way of an explanation? (He was wearing an Army uniform, not RAF - so it's unlikely he could have killed the pilot as well and flown back himself.) So what was his "exit strategy"?
