A lot of people have been asking me where I applied to dental school recently. I don't know if I answered this question in full in any of my previous videos, so here's a video for it!

If you're new to the channel, my name is Eli and I am a 3rd year dental student at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. I went to University of Maryland, College Park for undergrad, and I did a post-bacc program at George Mason and Georgetown Universities, called G Squared.
On my channel I vlog my dental school journey as well as make videos for pre-dental students who want advice on getting into dental school. I didn't have the easiest journey to dental school, and a unique story, as I was interested in medical school for 2 years after graduating before switching to dental. Follow along my journey as a dental student and after I graduate, I want the channel to be a way for young Black men and women to see someone that looks like them working in the healthcare field. Also, share the channel with anyone you think may find it interesting! I appreciate all the support and really want to get my KZfaq out there.

I'm starting a master's program this fall to matriculate into dental school. I will be definitely taking you advice on looking at school people got into that did the program.

Love this vid! For letters of recs, did you need to ask your undergrad professors or postgrad only? If you needed to ask undergrad professors, how did you approach them? Asking for students that either didn’t make very strong connections with their professors or hadn’t talked to them for a while😊 Thanks!

i asked both. i had a good relationship with the professors from undergrad though, so i'm not exactly sure how to answer that one.. but i would suggest sending out some e-mails to any professor that might know who you are and re-introduce yourself

I had a 2.9 undergrad gpa and did a DIY Post-Bacc and did 42 credits with a 3.8 GPA with just science classes. Does Being A EFDA for 2 years at A pediatrics (specializing in special needs children) and almost 1k volunteer hrs help my chances? I worried about how some schools will think about the DIY Post-Bacc compared to the traditional ones. Does this help me be competitive?

Did you apply and get accepted to Iowa? I went to the pre-dental summer academy and it was nice. I’m just scared of their winters. I also thought that I would be the only Asian at the school, but there were surprisingly a lot of different people on campus and in the surrounding area than I expected.

@@StudentDoctorEli I watched your video twice. You just said it didn't make sense to go to Iowa and you weren't going unless it was the only school you accepted to. I wasn't going to assume anything, that's why I came to your comments. I know you mentioned in previous videos that people ask what school you go to and you said that's how you know they didn't watch. I watched.

@@JoannBasilio lol in the video i listed all schools i applied to (included Iowa) and i listed all the schools i received an interview invitation from (didn't include Iowa)

@@StudentDoctorEli okay that makes sense now why you said you could've saved your money by not applying, since you weren't going anyway. That's weird that they reached out to you after your DAT, but didn't invite you for an interview. Thank you for your videos! Keep it up!!

Hii, i have a 3.12 gpa (masters in biological sciences health studies concentrated) and a 19 DAT. I have hundreds of volunteer hours and shadowing as well (different specialties) even tho I did my shadowing in another country and do plan on shadowing some more here in the US as soon as I send my application next week and will also work in a dental office. I am the co-owner and co-inventor of a patent in the medical field which has been developing into a business as well. My mother is a dental surgeon in France and I have worked in her office as a receptionist and also assisted many of her surgeries as well as the other dentists that work in her office plenty of times. Do you think, honestly, that I have a shot?

Was your 3.0 GPA after your post-bac, or is that your undergrad GPA? I'm in a similar situation now: around a 3.10 overall GPA. I applied two cycles ago but didn't get in. 500+ dental assisting hours and work experience. Currently in the Army Reserves as a dental assistant and planning to start a master's next year before reapplying.

After my post-bac my cumulative GPA was around a 3.02 or something like that. I'm not 100% sure. I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else though, and it may not be something you want to hear but it's something people need to hear: The key is taking higher level courses and succeeding. You don't have to be a 4.0 student in your masters by any means, but no amount of shadowing, volunteering, assisting, etc. will make an admissions committee say "well they didn't do that well in undergrad, but they can do well in dental school" because dental school is exponentially more difficult and they don't want to risk that investment. If you show them you can take higher level science courses and manage to get A's and B's (idk if I got any C's in my post-bacc) then that is what will probably get you over that hump. That is what's going to make them say "they struggled in the classroom before but they seemed to have gotten that together since undergrad" Best of luck my man. I think you can do it. And really kill the DAT to give you even better chances!!

@@StudentDoctorEli I really appreciate this feedback. Great to hear your story and get inspiration from you. I'm scheduled to start at High Point University this May and take their Masters in Biomedicine. I'm planning to take the DAT after my Masters, but hopefully I can get into High Points dental school before I graduate. The "no DAT" would be a great money saver for me.
