This is where I'd live as a digital nomad on $1000 per month or less. Some of these places may surprise you, and some may not. But in this video, I'm going to cover some countries I'd choose to live in if my budget was a grand or less... in USD.
I've spent a huge portion of my life living as s digital nomad, and it's one of the most incredible feelings of freedom being able to live and work where you choose. Of course, you'll have to have some kind of independent income, though I feel that a budget of $1K a month is fairly achievable for most people who are going into business themselves as an entrepreneur.
Most of these countries either Leon or I have experience with, though I'm adding one or two extra that we haven't yet been to, that have been on our radar for a while. I hope you enjoy!

I’m originally from Turkey, so I can definitely say that for $1000 which is around 8000-9000 Turkish lira, you can live a VERY very lavish life. And if you want to have the beach vibes, you can always travel to the coast or take a trip to one of the princess islands just nearby Istanbul. So you have the best of both worlds. And 9000 Turkish lira is 4x minimum wage, and many people don’t even earn that to give you a bit of a perspective.

Unfortunately a lot of people are still sleeping on Portugal. There are cities that are extremely expensive, but as a digital nomad, being able to live anywhere you can live for way under 1000$. Me and my gf lived near a pretty known city (Porto), in a beautiful little village. 5 minutes walking distance from a river beach and 20 minutes from beaches. With food, expenses, housing, fuel and so on we spent 500€ monthly. And that was pretty close to a city.

Ho Sorelle! I live in Valencia (Spain) and I spend about 1110€ per month. My expenses include flat fees (I live alone in a flat of 65m2), internet/phone fees, food feeds, car fees (fuel, insurance), sport fees, Netflix fees (yeah..), and other hobbies (about 100€ per month left for it). Etc etc 😊 Hope this can be useful!

I know it might not be a tropical location, but I’d recommend Ohrid, Macedonia. The city is very cosy, you can live with 300-600 euros a month with no issue. The Ohrid lake is just amazing, the people very friendly and there’s just so much to explore. Macedonia is a really small country, in 4-5 hours you can get from one border to the next, and rents go from 50 to 350 euros a month (if you live in a huge flat in the centre of cities). 🧡

Also, consider the impact of permanently moving to and purchasing properties/land to certain countries like Bali or Hawai'i, where the indigenous people face a widening income gap and being "priced out" of their own homes and land. If movers don't plan to give back to or empower the communities, and are living there because "you love what you've seen of the culture", I'd urge people to deeply reflect on what they're contributing to when they make that decision. Financial freedom shouldn't be about experiencing the world at someone else's expense, but helping others enjoy the same privileges that we often take for granted.

if only people were self conscious of this moving to canada, our real estate is incredibly expensive and our wages are so so so so low. its so disheartening as someone who was born and grew up here, ill never be able to afford to buy and most likely will have to move further away to afford something or continue to rent for the rest of my life.

Very interesting. I would say that in my experience, what is objectively great and what you will subjectively enjoy can be so different. The best way I've found to discover cities I´ve loved is trial and error. And even then, there are places I loved, then fell out of love with, then loved again even within my own subjective experiences. Circumstances can be so fickle, like meeting cool friends or getting robbed when you're in a place. But this is still inspiring! Nice work Sorelle.

Thanks for the tips, Sorelle! Georgia sounds very tempting. It's worth noting that for the 90 day tourist visa in the EU, you can bounce in and out of countries in the *Schengen zone.* So, for example: in Spain for 90, in Ireland for 90, repeat or go elsewhere. Some countries that are not a part of the EU are included in the Schengen agreement (like Norway). For long term benefits (friends/comfort of your own place), and with the budget, a nice option is renting long term in two countries (Italy and Croatia, as another example). Also, it's realistic to be able to drastically lower your budget after arriving in Costa Rica. We've lived there off and on for 3+ years, and it makes sense to rent short term at first and look for a reasonably priced long term rental (6-12 months) on the ground, communicating in Spanish. Much cheaper (and so GREEN!) in the Central Valley. You can live there and build a life, just have to go to the border every 90 days and renew your visa by exiting and re-entering in one day or weekend getaway. On a fun note, I think they have just announced a digital nomad visa...? Would love to see a video on visas geared towards digital nomads. =)

I was pretty sure you'll mention Tallinn because of Estonia's digital nomad visa. That list, however, was quite refreshing, and it offered choices I never thought about. Nice!

Wow when you said Jó Napot! It's just warmed my heart as a native Hungarian! Your pronouncitaion is soo good! Also I wanted to say thank you for recommending the Rich Dad Poor Dad and The Richest Man in Babylon. Within 3 days I've read both of the books, and as an Illustrator, I'll keep on learning how to be financially free with art. And I feel the possibilities coming forward, and I've started to get amazing ideas. Again thank you so much!

Great list! We're right next door to Costa Rica in Nicaragua and it's a lot more affordable here, plus the coffee is excellent 😀 We loved El Salvador as well!

Alright, when clicking on this video I did not expect my lil country Latvia to pop up as an option at all. If anyone's interested, we can trade spots, as I am looking to move and this place is too small for me! :D

That’s so true. During all this pandemic time, not travelling anywhere, not going anywhere actually, I have learned so much about myself, and also about some other things at social level. From your list, I’ve been only to Mexico (Mexico City, Queretaro, Guadalajara, Monterrey are cities I lived for quite some time) and Turkey (Istanbul, Antalya, Marmaris). Riga is on my list. I don’t think I would enjoy any of the others. I don’t enjoy hot summers. :)

As someone who has spent almost 2/3 of his life in countries outside the one where I was born in, I can appreciate the benefits of not being tied to a place. My idea of 'nomadism' has grown and evolve with time. Nowadays I think of it in the more traditional sense, where a human or group of humans would move to a place and try to make the most of the resources, until they felt that the place had given them all it had to offer. Of course, trying to have a more sustainable mindset, it's not just about taking, but also giving back. Thank you for expanding our frontiers with your suggestions. The current situation of the World, of course, makes travelling and relocating challenging, though still possible. More on the topic of living for $1000 (or less), Vietnam used to be (and to some extent still is) a great choice. Unfortunately, as with many places, there is not a proper 'nomad' visa in place... so, as you mention, you would have to move to neighbouring countries, or other places (at the moment basically impossible to re-enter).

I went to Latvia today! and Bali in 2019!... now leaving in Estonia for the last couple of years. This is a perfect country for nomads especially during the summer, so many beautiful forests and lakes so if you like nature as much as i do you would love to leave here too!

Thailand has a digital nomad visa which has recently been updated to loosen the requirements. Many digital nomad hubs such as Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Krabi, Koh Phangan. I’m in the north in a mountain town named Pai where it’s cheaper and quieter and known to be a place where creatives gather 😇

I worked from Cape Verde for two months at the beginning of this year. Not super fast internet (I do many video calls for work), but definitely affordable for living and great for watersports, such as (kite)surfing. Also nice if you need to be in a similar time zone as Europe but you want to get a break from European winter.

Hi, from Latvia! I was really surprised when you recommend my country. It is a very beautiful place and summers here are amazing. All the forests, sea sides, lakes, country side. You definitely need to come here in summer time. Also for 1000 dollars you can have a good life and enjoy a lot of things 😊

Definitely am going to have to keep this in mind when I can go travelling again! 😁😁😁 The places I am most intrigued by are El Salvador and Tbilisi, Georgia because of all the reasons you listed! Andrew from 'Nomad Capitalist' has spoken about this and it's great to hear you talk about it as well! Thanks once again for the amazing content! 😍😊😁 Xx
