Where lies the hope of a better life in “Arcane”? Which setting do we or should we prefer, Piltover or the undercity? This video essay tries to answer these questions by primarily analysing the show’s setting, but since characters also reflect where they come from, a few have been looked at such as Vi, Viktor, Ekko, Caitlyn, Jayce and Heimerdinger.

Excellent video again Tilda Owen. You really caught me off guard with the third option. It never occurred to me that the Firelights community would combine the bright lights, colors and fresh air of Piltover, and the sense of family and community of Zaun (during Vander's time as leader), and freedom into something better. A symbol of hope for Arcane: League of Legends. But you did Tilda Owen. You noticed how hope is seen further through the interactions between Vi and Caitlyn and between Ekko and Heimerdinger, at the bridge and their way home. For seeing this symbolism, I like to comment how remarkable you are. If you're planning to make videos that I suggested, check out these videos as references for Heimerdinger's character and how his newfound friendship with Ekko connect to possible events in Arcane: League of Legends Season 2: - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLynrZdpt5zOmZs.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9ZmethlqtzKmYE.html Overall, thank you for this video and excellent work on it.

Wow, thank you so much! I'm such a hopeful (naive?) person that even though I know that it's a tragedy, I can't help hoping for the best... It is also why I spend my spare time reading fantasy and not sci-fi, because fantasy usually has a happy ending... But I love to watch sci-fi, and one of the things that I love about Arcane is how well it mixes both fantasy and sci-fi. I know there will be heart-wrenching moments next season, but the hope lives (that also makes the tragedy that much better...) Anyway, I really like the way the Firelights are introduced, they're not perfect, but I think they're definitely the best option going forward!

@@tildaowen Nicely done. I had given up on getting the boxed set so that I could see this one, but now I am interested again. Maybe.... we'll see. Excellent commentary on the 3rd way to go ( see "the parallel society vs. Totalitarianism" ), I wish more people thought like that, especially today. Not much to be critical of here, but I will give it a try. Careful of an overly-idealized view of the people of the Under-city, honest and friendly does not really cover it. While not as evil & crazy as the Overlord class, they do tend to nod & wink and at the Criminal Lords that have the same point of origin they do, and overlook too many things that they could do to help themselves. If they are truly lacking something important, it is faith in their own selves and ability. As for the "upper" class...... There is a thing called "elite panic" recently coined to describe the paranoia of the top 1%. They project that on other people; ever notice how many shows and movies portray people who revert to total barbarism at the least sign of trouble? In fact, and this is easy to verify, in times of sudden disaster people tend to go the other way, looking out for others, even total strangers, and banding together to meet danger and hardships. Fear of losing what they have dominates the minds of those rich snobs, a hideous way to live, and totally unnecessary. The truth is, most people just want to be left alone, and the inability to understand this means that the elite are not only neurotic and given to evil, but they are not nearly as clever as they THINK they are. A dangerous combination, to be sure, but it is one that explains why societal collapse is a recurring event in history. As it happens, it is a necessary one. Eventually, as was the case with the Court of the Czars, the Fench Nobility, and on and on.... the Aristocrats just keep pushing and pushing for more of everything, until everyone else has to rise up and get rid of them.... just to regain the ability to have a meaningful life.

@@johnwolf2829 Interesting points, your knowledge of societal structures is great, thank you for expanding on them. I general I try to interpret what the show is trying to say about something, and when it comes to setting, the show is VERY ambiguous! So out of the two opposites it's very hard to favour one over the other. The most positive characters come from the undercity, but it is full of crime and addiction and only the strongest can eke out a living. Definitely not a good place to live! It's much better for the common person to live in Piltover, there's education, peaceful policing and prosperous commerce, but we don't see a single regular person from Piltover, only the extremely rich, the top 1% as you mention. So our view of the two parts of town is definitely warped... And this makes the message ambiguous and difficult to discern. I give my ideas, but at best I'm guessing! The show is a tragedy, so it's definitely putting a negative light on most of what's happening... Which is why I like to dig for the positive things to balance them a little 😊

Thanks! I really love Moulin Rouge and I just watched it again in detail (obviously) and fell right in love with it again. The atmosphere of the undercity is so much like the bohemian "underworld" in the film, I just had to add it. I had a hard time finding proper scenes from the wild west (or the frontier, really) to make my point (especially the every man for himself, pioneer spirit, etc was hard to find, so that I had to leave out...), but I hope it gives a general idea of the lawlessness and the freedom all at once... Yes, using the bridge as the stage for so many pivotal scenes is SO well thought of by the creators of Arcane, such a good image of both separation and connection. The fact that Vi hugs an enforcer right where her parents were killed by enforcers adds so much meaning to the scene ❤️

Great video! This makes me wonder where Mel goes on the spectrum. She isn't from either city and is one of the more corrupt leaders there but her intentions are good. Mel seems to be a more complicated character. She manipulates others for her own favors yet she wants Piltover to succeed and be safe.

Yeah, I'm beginning to like her more and more, at least for the development she goes through, because all her goals and games (and even morals) seem to shift after her mother arrives... In the beginning she seems to want what's best for Piltover because it benefits herself. In the end she starts to look at it more through the city's perspective than her own (but not entirely). But at no point in the show does she think/care about the undercity, only as a threat, and that is why she advocates peace and an independent Zaun, not because she feels they deserve it, but because it's better for topside (and herself), the cost of war would be too great for the people of Piltover.

Damn, I thought that the scene with Sky was the cleaner water of the more upper city kids being right above where it flowed to the lower city (I must've been taking a drink when that shot from below the water was on screen), I didn't realize that they were more or less all Undercity there... so, that means that Sky was presumably a Zuanite who moved into Piltover, not unlike Viktor himself. Worse, it shows that Viktor actually DID get to help Zuan in some ways in his position... but it wasn't in time, or it just gentrified the parts he helped (IE, now that the area was clean, Undercity kids were getting chased away). Piltover really managed to set themselves up to poach the best of Zuan and integrate them into their society so well you don't even realize how many of Piltover's "lower class" characters (which more or less means 'all the ones that aren't nobles') are from Zuan, and even the ones we do get character focus on in Arcane are fairly upper class since Viktor was Heimerdinger's assistant and Sky was also part of that circle.

Yes, we get very little information about Sky and very little about how much the people living in Piltover and the undercity really interact... So we can only guess, but based on this, there is social mobility and some interaction, but not much and not all of it beneficial for the undercity...

One thing I saw in a video that I found interesting is the mention of the music that plays when we first visit the under city (and more specifically the lanes) before and after the time skip. Before the skip, the song that plays is “Welcome to the Playground” which gives off this vibe that life in Vander’s Undercity, while not necessarily *pleasant* is welcoming, community based, and at the very least *livable.* Things could definitely be better, but it’s not really a bad place. After the time skip, the introductory song is “Dirty Little Animals” which is much more wild and unhinged, Silco’s Undercity is a place of degenerates, indulgence, drugs, alcohol and backstabbing, while it’s definitely survivable, it’s not at all a pleasant place to live

Ok. I definitely can't write everything I want in one comment and in one day ))) Let’s start))) The question in the title reminded me of a book I read in school a long time ago. It was Nekrasov “who in russia to live well” or who is happier? Priests or landowners etc? Hard workers decided to find such people and never found .. and the author never finished the book. This question from classical literature exists as a ma'am. My day started by remembering the plot of this book. In other words, it's about class inequality. Polarity again. But after school I read one interesting thought. It is with me now. When we talked about duality earlier, this thought came to my mind, but I did’t write about it. its essence is that between the two extreme positions that you are offered, you need to find and choose the third. find an alternative. And this is a reasonable way out of mental traps. This idea had a big impact on my life. including alternative music, subculture etc. But despite it all, I was’t see the connection with the Ekko community. In arcane we have Piltover and Undercity. The people are “having to choose between a kingpin who wants to exploit them and a government that doesn't give a shit.” Ekko created an alternative. And it's so cool. You're right! The Firelights are different and take the best of both worlds. Thanks for revealing this.

Very interesting, about choosing between extremes and trying to find your own middle way in life. I'm sure that touches close to home at the moment, living in Russia and all... I like the Caitlyn quote, it fits! I should have added that to my analysis... Also when you watch the firelight intro to episode 7, the fight scene with Jinx, you know that they are set apart from the two opposing parts of the city. I was very inspired by schnee's video about Ekko, you should check it out, he talks a lot about him as the third option or "the other".

Love Arcane and love your analysis. To me, we can’t really take a side or draw firm conclusions about Piltover (especially) vs the Undercity as entities. The difficulty with Piltover is we see only the very thin uppermost layer of it along with the Enforcement class. Nearly every bit of dialogue comes from counselors, heads of houses, and enforcers. The harbor master and the guy celebrating in the blimp basket in Ep 4 are the only two topsides lines I can think of that aren’t from the rulers of Piltover or their enforcers. The harbor master had a militaristic uniform, so I’m inclined to put him in the enforcement class along with the two operators of the hex gate we see later. Who are the “people” Grayson talks of serving and protecting? Who are the shopkeepers, theatre staff, and university employees? We only see 1 professor and it’s the founder of the city. Surely, there are many others. Do Jayce and her mom represent “the people” prior to his appointment to the council? We never see the Kiramman’s servants. Do they have any? This class isn’t depicted. My long-winded opinion is, in order to choose, we must know more about the topsiders who are not on the council (or the next dozen most powerful people) and are not enforcers. My view is Piltover has many strata and thousands of people who are never really represented. The Undercity has fewer strata, we see most of them and know them much better. Who are in the middle and do most of them reside topside as I think? How good are their lives, and who/what will serve them and the Undercity best?
@tildaowen
@tildaowen 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent points! I think that is one of the that reasons why I think we are supposed to favour the undercity a little over Piltover, precisely because our view of Piltover's people is much less nuanced. We see lots of people on the streets, in episode 1, where Vi and the gang run through the streets, as well as the throng in episode 4 that participates in progress day. But we meet none of them as you say, very good observation! The rulers and the enforcers only, but maybe that is because we are supposed to see tha undercity as the people? But then again, as you say, who are the people Grayson refers to and all the people on the streets? We actually see that closing the bridges causes a riot, so we must assume that there is a lot of traffic back and forth... But is that just the undercity folk going up and then back, servicing the ruling houses??? Actually, the drunkard celebrating in the blimp in episode 4 is also seen in episode 1 being thrown out of the brothel in the undercity for refusing to pay. Weird! A normal guy being in both those places!? I've actually thought for a long time that this man is a cameo for someone the writers know, just throwing him in there with no real purpose... What do you think?
@jasonmkc7797
@jasonmkc7797 2 жыл бұрын
@@tildaowen Wow! You're good. I didn't notice him being the same guy. Is he not paying because he's a poor undercity dweller, or because he's a privileged Pilty who thought he could just get what he wanted? Or maybe just a Pilty who has blown all his cash. I definitely saw him as a Pilty, but maybe he's Zaunish. Perhaps there are more layers to Zaun and the bottom-middle layers of Pilties aren't much different from the top-middle layers of Zaun. Caitlyn does say, "this city needs healing" and sees it only as one. Perhaps there's a lot of interaction and intermingling among those who "commute" from below for work. I think she's the moral truth of the city but she's also idealized and naive at times. I think you're right about the cameo. I also think the duality of this city goes both ways. Maybe the reality of the normie life is less a dichotomy than the two sides' power brokers believe (and clearly lead the audience to believe). Unfortunately, "us vs them" is great motivation to build and maintain power and to allow others to do so.

Great contribution once again. I like the aspects of colour you mentioned. As a men I seem to be to superficial to even mention this facts...so thanks to reminding me.🤣 What stays for me is the question in which kind of community I would like to live with my family. And the answer is clearly Piltover. The people there are save for the most part of their life, medicare is available, you have a job and food on the table, a roof on the top of your house/appartement. No criminals that can rob you whenever they want and even mebers of lower classes can have a good life, have education. On the opposite we have a kind of freedom for the stronger members of the Undercity society, who can protect themselves and take what they need to survive. If you are weak like Huck ( a character with which I sympathize a lot), you need someone like Vander who protects you or you will go down...and the people in the Undercity were only loyal to Vander, not to any of their fellow citizens. This is why Silco was so easily able to change the Undercity in his version of Zaun, which is only controlled by him and his mobsters. I mean the real question is would you like to live with your family safe and comfortable restricted to society rules and laws you might not like or free from that every day in danger getting oppressed by enforcers or humiliated and robbed by criminals? This is a question you can tell everybody in our society also...Piltover society is not so far away from our western system. Would someone of us really like to live in a little village in africa togehter with friedly and open hearted neighbours, sleeping on the ground in mud huds and in danger to be killed by hostile predators or animals? I guess most of us would prefer Piltover. The real question is what you would do if you had no choice, if you live in Zaun with a guy like Silco ruling the city as he likes to and you are not one of the few strong and you have a family to care for? Maybe a question for a new and much appreciated video?😜

That's part of the reason why they have the power. And that's also why we resent them, because they have all the benefits and all the power, and they still only care about themselves... They don't have to work their arses off just to get by, and how do they use their time? Plotting and scheming for their own benefits, not helping the undercity. Jayce and Caitlyn are not like that, but they're the odd ones out... And that's why we relate to them. We live in a piltovian society (well, democratic not oligarchic, depends on where you live, I guess), but we hope we are more like them and not Mel, Cassandra Kiramman, Embessa, Heimerdinger, Marcus, etc.

@@tildaowen Think we would find the same characters in our society - that makes the storytelling of arcane so great. You can find parts of yourself in each character. It makes it so easy to feel involved in the story. Protagonists have their weknesses and that makes them human and so likeable. Look at Caitlyn and her Upper Class arogance...everyone was laughing when Vi offers her to eat "slop" and she denied, even when she denied to pretend to work at the brothel it was under her dignity to do so but it made her human and she was open minded enough to try. What makes her a hero is hugging the addicted Huck for healing the wounded Vi, reasoning to Ekko in an very empathetic and modest way to give hextech back just to stop violence and admitting that Piltover did wrong to the Undercity. On the other side you find good sides in evil characters like Silco who puts his lifelong dream of Zaun behind the protection of his beloved daughter Jinx. Arcane tells not a story of black and white but many characters somewhere between the dark and the light

Ah, I love smelling fissures in the morning. Who needs clean air when you have pollution? Also, clean air makes people snobbier (creating unknown words is a feature of pollution as well). I think I'd choose Piltover as anyone who cares about their lungs. As for the "quality of the people", hardened Undercity people probably wins over the people who got used to take their meals (among other things) with a silver platter. Hardened people solves their problems practically, but in the wrong surroundings and community, creates more problems while making the young ones like themselves, so they are always in the same situation for generations, while softened, maybe entitled people are bringing nothing to the table, just waits for someone make their "progress" for them. And while Piltie kids can still be kids, Undercity kids are just child workers, thieves, sketchy traders etc. , they are not be able to be a kid. They are already adults with relatively 'lesser in pain than the actual adults', even some of them has even more. Hence the endless cycle of problems. If you steal the opportunity of being a kid from children, you'll never find the civilization you've dreamed of when they grow up. Ekko's community trying to become the tree which the one they surrounded. If they can overcome their natural faults, which shaped both Piltover and Undercity, then they may be on to something. Looks like it is the best one, but needs more time (there's a Heimerdinger inside all of us). Well, I don't want to watch Arcane for the fourth time yet (it's too soon) so I'm on the second lap of your videos!

Piltover and the Undercity. Both broken models, one both needing and repressing the weaker. Silco wants Zaun, but Vander doesn't believe the benefit outweighs the cost, if the method of achieving this goal is violence. Silco takes over and end ups creating an Undercity Piltover. After the timeskip, we do see more wealth (relatively) in the undercity. The chem barons breathe clean air, look clean, look wealthy. They meet where there are flowers. They are the Silco Undercity council. But as Vi mentioned to Caitlyn when at the very bottom of the undercity, the poorest are far more numerous. Silco has created what he hates. Piltover itself has grown even more wealthy, through trade (both legal and otherwise), and that has pushed some wealth into the undercity, but the lion's share still falls into the chem barons' hands. Do the bridges separate, call it 'Downtown' Piltover, and the surface city of Piltover on the 'wrong' side of the river? The Pilties tend to separate themselves from the Undercity through the control of the bridges. Can we call this side of the river Zaun, which encompasses a surface city and the rifts where the undercity lies? The episode 1 basically opens with a heist in the 'University district', but the view from the building tops still looks like it might be on the wrong side of the river. Certainly when Vi and Powder are looking at night over at Piltover centre, the decay around them seems to be on the 'wrong' side, but they're up high, in the clear air. So for me, I say the aboveground portion on the wrong side of the river. The best of both worlds, really. I just don't know what to *call* it.

I didn't see anyone else comment it so i felt i would help you clarify the nature of the "Undercity". the picture you put up of Piltover on top and the undercity Zaun underneath? that's not figurative. it's literal. in the in game lore Zuan and Piltover functioned as a port trade city that could freely open and close itself to the outside world through giant golden gates called The Sun Gates. regrettably not mentioned in the scene with Jayce and Silco when standing on the border wall. but at one point in history an earthquake took place when the people planned to create a channel through their city to increase trade by blowing up a series of caverns below to open up water flow. the result went beyond expectation. sinking much of the city and releasing toxic gases from below that killed many residents. Zaun rebuilt their city on the surface as well as by digging below. on the other hand Piltover taking advantage of the Sun Gates and water restricted trade, built themselves out and upward only. A shining city of gold towering over the city of Zaun in the toxic gases and chemically polluted caverns below. forever looking down upon the undercity.
@tildaowen
@tildaowen 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clearing that up! That really adds to my understanding of the place, Zaun didn't grow out of Piltover but was an integral and equal part? But separated through a disaster. I wonder why this isn't touched upon in the show? Either because it would influence the topsiders even more negatively? Or because it was irrelevant or too long to include?

@@tildaowen As it stands the story hasn't been completely true to the game and Riot hasn't announced if it will be the new true story or just be considered alternate universe version. For example originally Vi got her gauntlets when a band of thieves she worked with went and robbed a mining crew. their antics caused a collapse and her crew left. Vi stayed behind, ripped parts off of an Atlas digging rig to make her gauntlets, and helped the miners free. from there she went to Piltover to help protect people instead of being a thief. having her gauntlets being remade in hextech. In the show not only does that not happen, but now she has Vander. and the show introduces that her name is Violet and not just Vi. something never mentioned before in the 6+ years of her release. there are many subtle changes in the show compared to the original background of the game. Zaun was also one city before the collapse (and it also had a different name). Piltover was formed when they wealthy grew out of Zaun and built up while the poor dug down. instead of Zaun being formed from Piltover in the show. but the nature of Zaun and Piltover are the same if not their origins. one above, and one below.

@@steffanhymer1285 Thanks for your insight! The more I hear about league, the more I think that the writers of the series were given relative freedom to write the story as they saw fit. They've made an extremely well-structured plot and even better character arcs that all fit together beautifully! They had to make some changes to make that happen. Rather early on, I decided to interpret based on what I saw in the show and not what the game is about. Mostly because I have no desire to play the game, but also because of the above reasons, it would only muddy the waters... But the comparison is still rather interesting to hear, so thanks for that 😊👍
