Where is Your Accent From? The Subtle Aggression of Accent Guessing | Mirela Setkic | TEDxUSFSP

Accents are often met with negative bias and perceived as less prestigious. People who speak with a foreign accent don't have the luxury of living their life without being put under a microscope by complete strangers. Mirela Setkic, an immigrant and entrepreneur who speaks with a "less prestigious" accent, teaches us how one's accent can be an unexpected asset to succeed in life and connect with other people. Mirela Setkic, an immigrant and refugee of the Bosnian War, is now a successful entrepreneur, marketer, and speaker. Mirela only knew a few words of English when she arrived in St. Pete in 1996. Her parents brought her and her two younger sisters to the United States in hopes of better economic and educational opportunities. Mirela’s immigrant experience has not been easy, but it has changed her life in many positive ways.
Mirela is a founder and Chief Marketing Officer at Kapok Marketing, a digital marketing agency in St. Pete. She is also the co-host of Kickin’ it with Kapok, a podcast about business stories and marketing advice. Mirela has 10+ years of experience working in both marketing and business operations. She has an undergraduate degree in Management/Marketing and an MBA from the University of South Florida. Mirela believes each person is unique but has the same goal in life - to survive. This is the basis for how Mirela builds and helps others build long-lasting relationships in business and in life. Being an immigrant myself, am always proud of my origins and I have a unique accent. Whenever I am asked, I tell them my origins and end it up with something like "It is pretty interesting that I can speak your language and you can't speak mine." It is pretty ridiculous to be ashamed of your own origins! No need to make a big fuss about it. There ARE accents that are impossible to understand. And it is NOT always a negative indicator, On many occasions, I've been asked about my accent as a compliment.

When people ask just tell them "oh Im from Oregon" and if they persist say "east Oregon".

I had a lady at a gas station randomly tell me I have an accent. I asked her if she liked it. She asked me where it was from. I told her American. I don’t care who people think they are, no one is above me.

I agree but I am very very good at accents ...I can copy one after about 3-5 minutes. I have found, we are judged on accents, particulary the Brits ... though is sort of changing. Trouble is, when newbies are learning English, so to speak!, they just do not get it! Try accents all over Bristol for example!

Everyone has an accent, and we are curious animals. We ask natives as well, as we're curious about regions. I come from a migrant family (many countries and different continents), so that's that. Your reaction is your problem.

It’s rude to ask that question in an academic arena. The research you cite is interesting but you shouldn’t make a value judgement about it. It’s a fact. You were onto something with the 99.9% genetic similarity between humans that’s how to beat the racists, then you lost me with ‘immigrants are special’ nonsense. You’re hot people want to get to know you by asking about something interesting and different about you. Get a grip don’t take offence and stop moaning about people being interested in you. You won’t like it when that stops.

People so squishy these days. Easy to take offense and devastated by simplest things. This chick’s parents escaped genocide in Bosnia and she’s complaining about perceived microagressions in the grocery checkout lines in the form of simplest question regarding her accent ?? Girl, get it together.

I also lived and survived the war you're referring to, so I find your "Girl, get it together" comment very offensive for more than one reason.

I get your point, but what you are essentially saying is that since she had to escape from war, she now doesn't have the right to complain about anything in her life ever again, because it isn't as bad as war... Being questioned about your accent of course is nothing like having your survival threatened, but it does get very annoying and intrusive when you are forced to tell compete strangers your life story over and over. When I was young and just came to Canada and still had noticeable accent it would sometimes get EXHAUSTING, always the same series of questions: "Where are you from?" -- I'm from Russia. "So, where in Russia are you from?" -- The Ural Mountains, you know, the middle of the country... (A blank look from them at that point) "Oh, ok... So when did you come to Canada?" ... I think if you are a European-looking person it is worse, because there aren't too many white people with accents, so everyone always wants to know what's up if you speak differently. And where I live in Canada it isn't even as bad because there's a sizable number of French-Canadians, so at least some people just assume you are one too. But in the US where English is the only language it is probably even worse. Now that my accent isn't too noticeable it got much easier. But my mom still goes through this kind of questioning every few days... It's like everyone else is allowed to go about their life while you constantly have to account for your past to complete strangers. I'm sure all these people aren't trying to offend, they just don't realize how frustrating it gets. And that's why this talk is important.
