Every great journey has a beginning. We talk to our panel of artists about the road they took to become the artists they are today. Their stories are often hilarious, occasionally cringe-inducing and always inspiring. Whether they got their start working out of a dorm room at a college they didn’t attend or by going up against the local laws and customs, all of these artists have an intriguing origin story to tell.
Tattooers, let us know how you got your start in the comments below.
Inked has rounded up all of your favorite tattooers for another season of Tattoo Artists React. This season we’ll be asking them about the first tattoo that they ever did, what they think about name tattoos and we’ll find out if they can identify celebrities by their tattoos. You’ll watch them rip into some of the worst tattoos on Earth and laugh until your sides out as they tell us about the worst clients they’ve ever had to deal with. It’s going to be a season filled with excitement, hilarity and even the occasional tear. New episodes will be posted every Friday.

In some asian countries it was and still is illegal to get or give a tattoo because its so connected to the Yakuza (sorry if i misspelled that) which, for simplicity, is the asian mafia. Bath houses and other public places can and have thrown people out for having tattoos. Its changing but slowly. The history is very interesting.
@erickdiaz1606
@erickdiaz1606 4 жыл бұрын
You’re almost right. Yakuza is mainly Japanese. Triads are from China. Your concept is right as people think if you’re tattooed that you’re gang affiliated. But the Yakuza is pretty much only in Japan.

If you look down a couple comments, you’ll see a few from a Japanese artist living in Japan. He or she says that although there is a law that you can’t tattoo without a medical license, it’s not so strictly enforced, & they had no problem opening up their tattoo shop.

I appreciate Poch's story so much, looking at him he must've been through so much to finally get to where he is. Real definition of black excellence, studied nursing so he could learn about the human body, went through a predominantly white career path and still came out a success, love him for this
@roseadjei-bempah688

@FoxRcng708 I was referring to tattooing being a predominantly white profession not nursing. I'm not quite sure what you thought you were doing, but if you were educated you'd understand simple english. This is probably an individual problem, as over 200 people understood my comment. Do you need recommendations on basic english online courses? Or would you like to continue being ignorant? Do lemme know!

Hi, Julie! This is Horiten, and I am a female tattoo artist here in Japan. While it is true that the law against tattooing without a medical license exists in Japan, it is not so strictly enforced. The individual city governments and police departments mostly use the law at random times and mostly in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka, as an excuse to harass the clients more than the artists. Here in Nara, Japan (near Osaka and Kyoto) I have never had an issue with openly operating my gallery, shop, or tattoo bar, and never been harassed by the police.
@julieghim7846

Kansai Fixer Thanks for your reply! The reason why I said it was disappointing to know that there are legal restrictions for tattooing in Japan/Korea is because I one day hope to work/live as a tattoo artist in Japan (after my apprenticeship is over and I gain some experience) but I’m worried that as a foreigner the consequences for being caught by authorities will be more severe, and getting a visa in the first place may be more difficult as I wouldn’t be able to apply for one to work as a “legitimate” member of society. I really love tattooing, and it’s the only thing I can see myself doing lifelong. May I message you for some further insight?
@Kansaifixer
@Kansaifixer 4 жыл бұрын
@@julieghim7846 Yes, you can message me. However, I won't post my email here because I don't need the spam. Over on Kansai Fixer, at the end of the video, there is a contact email address posted on the screen for me at Kansai Fixer, along with my Instagram. Please use the Kansai Fixer email, as they are my contacts for English/Chinese communication. CHEERS! Horiten

Kansai Fixer that issue reminds me A LOT of New York where it was illegal until 1997! It wasn’t really enforced and you could still find shops but it could be an issue when cops decided they wanted it to be one. Not really adding anything here just thought the parallels were interesting, hopefully one day they’ll become more lax and allow it openly like New York did :) some laws are just there because no ones gone through the process of getting rid of them and it’s annoying

My 11 year old is in love with art and draws 24/7. She mentioned today doing tattoos would be really cool but the tattoo pen scares her and she doesn't think she can learn the gun. A local woman who tattoos was talking to her while I was getting my tongue pierced. Girl stopped what she was doing and was just drawing with her. Now shes hooked on drawing tattoos for people. My Moms friend has bought 2 drawings from her and had someone tattoo them. She thinks its so cool to see her art on a person. Not sure its the profession I envisioned for her but hey I love tattoos and she promised them for free XD

Kelly c'mon! I wish I was your friend! You're like one of the coolest people I've ever seen literally. Mad respect for the guy pursuing his dream after loosing his arm. That's really inspiring. Also is inspiring how Poch made it in an industry dominated by white people. I'm so happy to see how many poc artists there are nowadays, that's amazing. Lastly, I hope Asian countries to stop demonizing tattoos, is kinda sad how Minji is considered a "gangster" by some of his relatives just because he desided to be a tattoo artist.
