In this episode, we have a quick discussion with John Eberhart about hunting scrapes throughout the season.
John has killed at least 50% of his Pope and Young Book Bucks in an area where there was an active scrape.
We discuss:
- Where John's ideal scrape is
- How John preps his tree locations to hunt scrapes
- When he sees scraping activity at it's peak
- Out of state hunting strategies
- and much more!

IKR!!! I grew up with the motto you sit in the same stand all year long and a buck will come by eventually. If I had half the knowledge that i have now I would have had way more mature bucks harvested.

I killed a nice 8pt in a spot I saw several bucks in last year. They always followed a low point, for lack of better words, into the spot I hunted. I wanted to post season scout last year in that laurel but never got the chance. After killing a buck there this year I decided to go inside what I thought was bedding during the rifle season. There were trails beaten into the ground, poop everywhere and scrapes in several spots. Not a bedding area but likely a staging area. I'm going to find a nice quiet way in there next year for sure!

In the thumb 2 years ago, on Halloween, I had 5 different shooters come in within an hour. 3 of them were chasing a doe single file. I shot 3x that night and hit branches every time. First time at the spot. Public land.

You never know where a deer is bedding or eating ( 100%) because they constantly change . Bedding, maybe you can nail that down to an extent . Feeding changes hour to hour , day to day and depending on food source availability timing

@chadsyl23
@chadsyl23 3 жыл бұрын
All the terminology can definitely make it confusing! On the simplest of terms the "rut" happens every November throughout the Midwest and at other times pending the location in the US. The "rut" is always preluded by the pre-rut or what some call the signing phase. Scrape week is a part of pre-rut/signing phase.

So the wind is out of the NW and your location is SE of the scrape will I want to position my platform on the SE side of the tree or on the NW side of tree? RH shooter.
@p90xercise
@p90xercise 2 жыл бұрын
NW side, to the left or right of the scrape depending on which hand is your dominant. Parallel to the trail you expect him to come up. Example- r handed shooter should put that stand on the R side of the scrape (East side) facing NW parallel to the scrape so he can shoot at the buck at the scrape to the left. Clear as mud? Haha

@SMSCHA
@SMSCHA 3 жыл бұрын
It's not his farm, it is a farm he can hunt. Why would you say these bucks arent a reality? I was hunting public land in Lake county Mi last year and again this year and I have seen P&Y bucks both years but I just haven't put my myself close enough to get a shot yet. This guy shoots big bucks on land that is not managed. The Drury's shoot great bucks but their land is strictly managed. I just don't have the time to be in my stand like these guys, I think they hunt everyday of the whole damn season
