There was a lot of homophobia in US government post 1940, and these police crackdowns on gay clubs happened often throughout the 1960s - another notable one being the Fun Lounge police raid in 1964, but the Stonewall police raid was essentially the last straw for the gay community. The people who were raided saw it as an authoritarian government's attack on their untraditional sexuality, and formed activist groups. The idea was to show the world that they (gays and lesbians) are not the fringe minority that they are perceived to be. I may be wrong but I think the Bs and the Ts were added as a sort of formality, having been under the same umbrella as the gays and lesbians. That is essentially how LGBT began. But it also inadvertently opened the flood gates to other new groups like Queer/Questioning, Asexual (i don't know why that even deserves a name tbh), the "2-spirit" people, and who knows what else now. So it started as a sort of social revolt against authoritarianism, but then it morphed into a movement for anti-traditionalism and basically an attack on pretty much all traditional values, all in the name of Human Rights and equality.
