Crystal, as a foster child when I was in college please please keep her room at home for at least a year. I know Ari is adopted and been with you for years but one of the hardest things as someone who was in foster care was going to college and then not feeling like you have a space to go home to when you need or want to. Keep her things exactly as they are when she leaves so that she can always feel she’s coming home. Xo

Yeah😅 My mom decided to do a makeover for my room when I came back from a year abroad and I acted like I loved it, because it was cute, i love my mommy and didn’t want to be ungrateful but I legit cried for like a week because it wasn’t MY ROOM, even my beloved bed was changed, the mattress, ALL OF IT. I did start loving it more with time 🫣 but could have done it with me and MY taste, and gradually.

Leave her room intact!! She will need her room when she comes home for the holidays, when she needs a place to be away from a dorm room, have her space! Definitely coordinate with roommates on what everyone is bringing so you don't have duplicates of stuff (usually everyone shares one minifridge or some campuses have rental minifridge + microwave combos, etc.), change clothes out seasonally to help save space, and lofting your bed or getting risers for additional space helps out a ton. Good luck!!! College was some of the best years of my life, you are going to have so much fun!

Tip here from a college student!! Dorm rooms really don’t have much space but when your bed is lofted you can store your dresser and other storage bins underneath so your room doesn’t look too cluttered. I personally did not want my personal belongings to be shown underneath my bed so I got a bigger comforter that would hang down and hide my extra storage. Also since you will be somewhat close to home, you can switch out your clothing based on the season (I don’t know how that works because I’m not from Arizona, but there is a drastic change in weather here in Minnesota.) Good luck Ariana- you will do great things!!

A suggestion for Arianna for college, is take what she wants within reason, communicate with her roommates to see what they are bringing, and go from there. My daughter is going into her sophomore year of college, so we have a much better idea of what to bring this coming year. Also with her being an hour away if she discovers she took something she doesn't need she can always bring it home when she has a chance, same with forgetting something. Another suggestion is, to just leave her room as is, its not like she is moving out permanently, there will be breaks from school, where she may want or need to come home plus Summer breaks, then she has her space where she can come home, rest, relax, chill and recharge her batteries, the first year is tough, my daughter is just over 2.75 hours away at school and she came home many weekends her first year for just those reasons. Having that personal space at home is such a great comfort, she will know its there waiting for her if she needs it at anytime.

I agree with letting her keep her bedroom! When I went to college, my mom decided to downsize to a two bedroom house for just her and my younger sister. At the time, I was all for it because she was moving to a cool area, so I didn’t think I would mind sharing a room with my sister for short periods of time. However, it definitely prevented me from coming home more often knowing I didn’t have my own space there. I was also sent home from college from March to September of 2020 due to COVID, so you never know if your child will randomly need a place to stay at home for prolonged periods of time haha.

Message from a college student that lives a 9hr flight away. Congratulations Arianna!! This is gonna be such a fun chapter of your life. You're gonna have to communicate with your roommates about what to bring. I would suggest getting a fridge, microwave, mirror, cleaning supplies, etc. together/split the cost as you'll not have space to have 3 of everything. You'll have to condense your wardrobe (amazon has space saver hangers that I use and love). Don't overbuy stuff because you'll move out at the end of the year, and it's gonna be a pain to pack up. It may seem daunting to move away, but you're going to be so busy with cheer, classes, and friends that it's not going to feel so bad. And you'll definitely be coming back frequently. Lots of love:) Yay Arianna!!

I went to college an hour away from home (I wasn’t doing a sport though), but I was able to come home every weekend (of course, gas wasn’t as high), at least for awhile and switch out clothes and carried a cooler back and forth to take snacks back to my mini fridge. It was definitely hard for awhile and I would cry every time I left home and went back to school, but it got better. Definitely talk and divide between the three of you because there are plenty of things you can share: fridges, microwave, mirror, hair dryer, furniture or storage units/shelves, t.v., etc.

That's what I did! I took 2 weeks of outfits and rotated it. That way I always felt like home is my 'base location' which made me less sad and stressed about "moving out" and I always had fresh clothes. also you don't need winter clothes just taking space during summer months and vis-versa. Same with shoes and heels! I also took back all coursework material after the semester was over instead of storing it in my time room.

Advice from a college senior: the first year is definitely the hardest when it comes to determining what to pack, getting used to a small room, and living with other people. After the first few months, you'll figure out what you really need at school and what you can leave at home. Packing becomes a lot easier in the next few years. Like others have mentioned, take advantage of the space underneath your bed (most beds can be raised or you can get bed risers). Mattress toppers are great for making the bed more comfortable to sleep on. Use storage bins, baskets, or small drawers to organize everything. I love using drawer dividers to organize all of my clothes. Hang pictures with command strips and have a rug to make the room feel cozier. Having a desk lamp is great for studying at night time if your roommates are sleeping. Not sure if your dorm has ac (I know mine didn't) but if it doesn't, bring a strong fan with you. Buy shower shoes and a shower caddy. Also, if you realize you forgot/don't have something, you could always get it after you move in! If Ariana is coming home often on the weekends and is staying during school breaks, I would definitely say to keep her room the way it is now until she officially moves out. Starting college and living on your own may seem daunting at first, but over time, it comes to feel like your second home!

I remember how shocked I was to share space with so many females. I was the only female living in my parents home when I left at 18. It was hard to get used to sharing everything in a small space. But the key is not to spend so much time in that small space but to go to the library and other buildings to get away and study. I found a study partner that had her own space and that was great. Having a buddy system to study is a great way to get to know other people by doing a common cause. Good luck! It is an exciting time to explore yourself in different situations.

Totally agree. The only time my roommate and I were ever in the room was at night. I thankfully had my boyfriend living on campus too so I hung out with him and a couple weeks in, I had a new group of friends and we would hang out in the Quads all the time, or study together in the library, or there are often quiet rooms on campus if you need peace. Even getting a job will ensure you aren't in your room all the time.

Crystal, I’ve read through the comments here and on FB so I won’t repeat. Instead I’ll just ask that you please heed the advice of your followers. The most important of the breaks mentioned is the mental break. There will be times when Ariana just needs to retreat to her own bed. I was fortunate like many of the parents to just leave my kids rooms in tact. At minimum please give it a year and don’t rush to change. Ariana will already be experiencing a lot of change (for the good); having the consistency at home will be good for you all. Best of luck Ariana, you got this!

As a college student who didn't have a home first semester, coming back to my own room in my own space is something that literally changed my mental health in college. First semester was SO hard (of course all the adjustment adds to that), but once I had a space to call my own to return to, it made me feel so much more secure and happy. Definitely recommend keeping the room! Check and see what your roommates are bringing! Also, you're an hour away, if you are there and realize you want something/don't need something that is taking up space, you can take a weekend trip, or ask family to if they watch a cheer competition or something! You'll adjust haha, I started with four bins and ended my last semester with one bin and a suitcase

Arianna, embrace the moment and enjoy college life! Remember to pace yourself and don't forget to focus on your school work. Bed risers are great for creating storage space and give you the extra closet space in a tight room. Most of all have fun!!!

Best of Luck to you Ariana. I will say bring tissues. When our Adult Child started College quite a while ago now. I said as our child was a bit in tears is that this was not goodbye but, see you later. Somehow those words made that transition easier. Loved that Jake joined you on the pedicure. Glad that your Mom got to do something special for herself. So glad that you have her and Bonnie helping.

You could also store things under your bed in bins, if you have space under there. You could also get a storage container that has drawers to have next to your bed and it can be used as not only storage but a nightstand. You may not have many electrical outlets so you can also get a power strip, that’s what we call them, that has several outlets on it so you’ll have more places to plug things in to.

So excited for her and hope her and all the roommates hit it off! Remember they are in the same position so really you are not alone. If something just isn't going well after some time...they (the college) usually will make accommodations if needed. They want students happy. Just know you aren't "stuck" for the whole year. I found this weird as why would you do anything with her room? She is at college, not moving out. She will be home for major holidays which are often for weeks at a time and summers. Colleges expect you to go home and you are not allowed to stay on campus during breaks. Just hold off with all that for a while. Her stuff doesn't need to go into storage either! It should still be "her" room to come home to while furthering her education. And I mean the next 4 years if needed. I would have been pretty upset and stressed if my parents talked that way when I went. Just food for thought. Bless her and hope she has a great year!!

Hannah is doing really great driving. Ariana so proud of you I know you will love college. I wish I had gone when I was younger but did not go until after I had my daughter which was very difficult at 33. Much love to all Crazy Pieces Family 😎🥤

Some advice from a college student who dormed - don’t bring a lot! A. You don’t want to take over the room yourself causing a strained relationship with your roomies and B. You can always get what you need as time goes on especially since your family is only an hour away (I moved across the country from mine) You got this Arianna!

Advice from a 'been there' mom of 3 current college students...the unlimited swipe meal plans get old real quick! It seems like such a good idea but when you analyze the swipes at the end of the semester, it's mostly wasted. I have heard this over and over from other parents. My kids preferred to have snacks and easy breakfast things in their dorms. And they darn sure didn't get up early for breakfast on the weekends. We now pick the plans with 10 or 14 swipes and supplement with groceries for the dorm.

Leaving for college was both the scariest and most exciting time of my life. I am very independent and responsible and was the type of student/kid who has always been self motivated and my parents never needed to remind me to do homework or projects so I wasn’t scared of being on my own it was more being completely independent. I went to college 3 hours from home so I was only coming home for breaks and special events. The fall semester of freshman year was the most difficult and I felt a little homesick. I met my lifelong best friends freshman year and I quickly began to love college. My sophomore year I moved off campus with my best friend and got a good job so I was almost never at home. Junior and senior year I lived on campus again and loved it (I joined a sorority freshman year which was the best decision I made but the cheer and athletic teams at college are like sororities). I would do freshman move in programs so I could move in early, I did habitat for humanity trips for spring break, and I became a nanny/sitter for multiple families and they would take me on vacations during winter break. In the summer I lived at home but was constantly traveling to other states to visit my friends. I would go back to college in a heartbeat. Best time of my life!!

I lived in a dorm room with 5 other girls. Like literally 6 girls in 1 room. The only closet that we have is so small that it only fit few of my stuff. Few things that are very important were container box where I can put under the bed. 3 container box: 1 for food stock, 1 for clothes, and 1 for toiletries. I hope you have a good time in your college life. I know you'll enjoy that. Your room may be small but trust me, you'll enjoy being with your roommates. Good luck to your future endeavours!

There are tons of small storage hacks to be found on the web! Also, I use a lot of "over the door" storage in my small space, spring loaded clothespins come in very handy, I hang outfits on one hanger to save closet space, use a storage hassock as a computer chair, underbed storage containers, S hooks to hang things off the foot of the bed, reuseable shopping bags with handles are my laundry baskets (easy to carry!). I put a sprayer in a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and that is my only cleaner. It disinfects, has no smell, and it's cheap. I don't store my blankets. I layer them on the bed and sleep on them, and get under them with temp changes.

I am so happy Ari decided to go to college. Please leave her room as is so that she will have a place to come back home to. She may have a rough week at college and cheer session and may need a weekend to just be in her space. You guys have a huge home and seem like all the kids have space so Ari's room should not be messed with. Sending love from the Bahamas.

You could get some under bed bins for your clothes, or a small dresser and put it at the end of your bed. if there is a desk in your room, you can use that for your make up. My daughter used to sit on the floor in front of a full length mirror that was hung on the door to put her makeup on. You could get one of those lap desk that people use to put their laptops on. It fits over your lap when you are in bed.

if you get storage boxes you can put them under your bed for most items or for a closet storage! it really depends on the layout of the dorm of course but a helpful and well known storage trick! plus they can be hidden by using a curtain that hangs under your bed or even a blanket!

I personally wouldn’t share a mini fridge. I’d share a microwave though. I wouldn’t worry about coordinating with colors or what everyone is bringing, that’s too much stress. Also, USE SHOWER SHOES!!! Dollar store flip flops works! I was an hour and a 1/2 away, I came home often and really enjoyed the freedom

Plastic organizing drawers are your friend. I put those in the bottom of my closets, and only hung the stuff that HAD to be hung up. That looks like a challenge to organize such a small space for three people! Hopefully the 6 of you can work out using the common space for other storage.

I think I recall one of Ariana's cheerleading buddies is going into her second year of college. She would be a good resource as to what she has room for as she plans what to take. Her life is about to change forever. Her childhood experiences are ending and her adult experiences are about to begin. Embrace them while keeping your family relationships close. College is so different than high school. You will have to plan your time since you are going to be involved in cheerleading. Make yourself proud. You will be making lifetime friends and training for a lifetime career. Have fun, but work hard. It'll be worth it.

From a college kid to another there should be a list of what to bring and what not to bring on the school website for incoming freshman you can store some of your side underneath your bed by lifting your bed up to create more space and college is a great opprotunity to make new friends and discover new things about yourself. Another thing I would say is don't worry about having a major right away you can wait till the second semester of freshman year or even wait till sophmore year as well as text or call or email your roomates on what to bring with you and what not to bring so the is no duplicates. A mini fridge is very helpful for fruit or any snack as well as any drink if you get thristy in the middle of the night.
