We stayed at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington DC Capitol - Navy Yard in March 2022. Extremely convenient. Our hotel room had small kitchenette with microwave and fridge. Entrance to the Navy Yard Metro Station was literally across the street. It was walking distance to Starbucks and to Whole Foods and a Harris Teeter grocery store and what seemed like a million restaurants. I thought the area was clean and safe. We are coming back in late May and will stay there again.

I visited DC for the first time last week and had a blast. Thanks for all your helpful tips you provide on this channel. We stayed at the Yotel Hotel and thought it was great for first time travelers to DC. It’s right next the Capital and a short walk to Union Station and the metro. Next time I will try the Wharf area.

@@TripHacksDC I left the kids at home and went with a friend. It would be fine for kids. The decor was very interesting. I told my friend that it reminded me of what people from 1984 would imagine the future would look like. They refer to the front desk as “mission control.” 🙄. Overall I had no complaints and it was definitely a memorable experience-I felt like I was staying in the space station.

If you're coming to the city as a tourist rather than on business, I think Rosslyn makes a lot of sense. Close to Arlington National Cemetary, a quick ride over to Georgetown, and Metro-accessible to anywhere downtown. They also have very good food options now, unles a lot of areas downtown which can be food deserts if you don't pick right.

I was in DC for about a month from March to late April. Stayed in several hotels 1. Hyatt The Wharf area:The free shuttle was great for sightseeing on the national mall. It’s also close to the Tidal Basin. Free breakfast saved money.2. Thompson DC and Courtyard in Navy Yards: Metro to and from national mall. Nice area next to ballpark, plenty of places to eat. 3. Silver Spring Downtown, DoubleTree: Had to come up here because hotel prices were getting crazy. Downtown area is nice to get some decent eats. Next to the metro so could still take it to do the last few sights we wanted to see in DC.

I am leaning towards booking a hotel the wharf; it looks super. My second consideration is Downtown, but it seems to have dropped a bit in your rankings in 2022 due to the Pandemic fallout. We used to stay at the Holiday Inn @ Rosslyn, it was a quick walk to the Rosslyn Metro Station, I believe it has been demolished now though. We've also stayed at both Intercontinental hotels, The Willard was my fave of those, with the right room you'd get an amazing view of the Washington Monument at sunset. It can be a traffic nightmare outside with drivers just laying on the car horns (a good sign of a busy city... 🤣 ) The Wharf was ok, hotel was great, and the staff were amazing. The helicopters going up and down the Potomac were great photo opportunities, but it would get very loud with the nightlife (again another good sign of a busy city... ) Can't forget the Water Taxi at The Wharf either, while not the quickest, it's a good way to get up and down the river, and if the weather is nice offers some great spots to photograph. Now we stay at Holiday Inn Capitol - Natl Mall, it's a few minutes walk to L'Enfant Metro, and super close to the Air & Space Museum.

I was just there last week. I know its not on your list but I stayed in Bethesda at the Hyatt and I loved it. It was almost half the price of many of the hotels in the 11 areas (hotels are expensive right now, guess they're trying to recoup lost revenue) and it was literally steps from the metro. 20 minutes into downtown on the red line or a $17 uber (not much if you split it between 2-3 people). To try and save some $$ I used to stay outside of DC, and ended up always being a short drive of either end of the Orange line. Hotels were cheaper, sometimes by $60/night or more for the price ranges I was looking at. However, I was always buying day passes $15/day per person x 4 people) for the Metro as for my family of 4, I calculated that with the ride into and out of downtown, one additional ride or so it about paid for itself, plus we didn’t fully understand the metro costs as well the first few trips. However, in recent years, I’ve found some good deals at hotels around the White House that although more than some of the outlying areas, I don’t have to pay for 4 people to take the metro in/out of downtown often during peak hours plus parking at the outlying Metro station. Since we generally walk almost everywhere downtown, metro costs are minimal and for us, we have sometimes actually spent less money per day by paying more for a hotel near the White House. We don’t have to sit on the Metro for 30+ minutes twice a day and having a hotel near where we spend most of our time is nice in case someone wants to go rest for a little bit.

I used the Bus/Metrorail every day and paid per trip. Over 7 days, I used about $25, pay per ride. We took the time to get a Senior SmarTrip card for my spouse and her cost was half. We rode the DC Circulator one day, but it was too slow. CapitalBikeshare was more convenient but obviously has limitations, like one has to be 16yo; I paid for a monthly CaBi pass and only used a half dozen rides for 120mins... that said $20/pass as a very small part of my overall trip cost, and the phone-app convenience was nice.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Old Town Alexandria over Thanksgiving weekend 2021 because it was right across from the King St. metro station. Parking was not free, but I'm starting to see that there is no free hotel parking in or near major cities these days. My husband also did not like the safety factor relying on the metro and having our family walk everywhere on foot as it is dark by 5:00 p.m. in late fall, but it was suggested we not try to drive to all our destinations. But we found that there were people everywhere still at night and plenty of lighting throughout the city anywhere we were going. As far as the hotel, it was ok. I would prefer something a little more luxurious next time.

The Wharf was very nice, convenient and safe. We used buses 74 and 52 on 7th to get us near Circulator stops. Visited Mall, Capitol, Georgetown, U street from there. If you are attending a concert at Anthem, you can’t beat it. With that said, I would prefer the Portrait Gallery area on another trip.
