I was diagnosed at 46 and have never even consumed one alcoholic drink in my life. I’ve tasted it and hate it so never drank it. I know three other people also with breast cancer who only very occasionally drank alcohol. Also, not overweight, fit and active. I think it just happens regardless of what we do/don’t do.

If you compare women who drink and don't drink, more drinkers (like me) get breast cancer. But that doesn't mean that no tee-totallers get it. The biggest risk factors are age & being a woman, but because those are things we cannot change, we can only focus on the things we can change.

Thank you for this video! I drank heavily for 18 years till my BC diagnosis 16 months ago, so, worked very hard to get it. Never touching it ever again and will continue to celebrate my life every day without it. I am very happy i finally gave it up, it had to get to cancer to do it. Instead of promoting drinking since early age, the society should rather educate young people on effects of ethanol on all organs and body systems and what terrible damage it does to physical and mental health.

Excellent and very helpful information - especially with the holiday parties and get togethers which almost always involve alcohol choices to make. Looking forward to video on alcohol and recurrence risk. Right now doesn't make sense to me why would increase chance of a first breast cancer but not a recurrence. Thanks for the videos !!!

In my case, irony is the word of the day. I used to drink 5oz of wine with dinner, 3-4 times a month. I quit drinking 2 years ago. The irony is that I quit drinking and developed er positive breast cancer. My mother used to call me Contrary Jane and of course, I still am.

Could you please make a video on fasting for autophagy and if it is a good tool to prevent reoccurence?

There is no evidence to show that fasting has any impact on cancer outcome

The evidence is conflicting. There’s a study that showed the cancer cells got stronger with fasting into autophagy. Fasting 24-hours before chemo helped me avoid nausea, though.

@@ToowokeforFlorida I´ve seen that too, fasting can cause other issues. I try to not eat until lunch time and not after 8pm at night as my oncologist is obsessed with keeping weight low and exercise since my recurrance even though I was always slim so I try night fasting and morning exercise then I eat. Who knows so much conflicting info out there.

I gave up smoking many years ago, and according to many people, I can't enjoy the occasional drink. We all have to die of something, and not drinking won't make you live forever.

I have family that drink a lot and no breast cancer and those that didn´t drink much or never got breast cancer and passed. Also all the family members that smoked got breast cancer and ones that didn´t didn´t get it.. even though they say smoking isn´t really a risk factor.

Hi Dr Liz. thank you for doing these videos. How does alcohol affect recurrence with lobular breast cancer? Also, have a brca2 mutation. My breast cancer was found during a prophylactic double mastectomy. It was 8mm, hormone positive her2-, low oncotype, low ki97, .no nodes, on Anastrazole, Post menapausal. I am very anxious and red wine helped me unwind. I love the taste of it as well. My Mom died at was diagnosed with BC at 40 and died at 46 when it came back in her other breast after a single mastectomy. She would occasionally have a drink. Lots of breast cancer on my Moms side. Her mother died of it at 86 but her sister died at 60, tea totler but smoked. All from Ireland. Suspect all had brca2 mutation. There was also a sister who died of pancreatic cancer at 50. So sad.

When I got breast cancer at the age of 36 years I was a total teetotaler. So at age of 62 years my breast cancer came back stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Before I was diagnosed I was drinking red wine every night when my husband died and I just couldn't cope and this was just before Covid and the shut down didn't help. And now I don't have any desire for wine or any alcohol. And I am living with my son and his family and being around family is the best medicine. I have visceral metastasis in lung, liver, right adrenal gland and mass near left ovary. ER+, Her2 negative with luminal A and luminal B. No genes for any types of cancer, I had genetic testing.

Hello,I was diagnosed at 40,and seldom drank.I don't have the Braca gene either.I always ate healthy but had a lot of stress prior to being diagnosed.I read a book 30 yrs.ago that stated when you've been treated with chemo & radiation for b.cancer 30% of ppl get a metastasis decades later.My Dr.thinks I am high risk for that happening.It is a difficult thing to go through.

I'm not a drinker either. Had 4 pregnancies and breast fed my boys. With that I should of be breast cancer proof. But none the less I too have breast. cancer. It's like every product you might enjoy. Its going to cause you cancer. I think we have a case of medical gaslighting going on. In orher words if you enjoy something it positively gives you breast cancer. Another thing was a study on our FDA. shutting down the work of certain resear hers on the brim of cancer treatments. Hear about anti Neoplastins Dr Brazimski. Laatril? Or the absolute uselessness of our favorite cancer drug Tamaafen causing secondary cancers. Astro Zennaca owns cancer is making a fortune of making sure there is never a cure. All about the$$$$$$

@DrLizORiordan Once upon a time i weighed 130kg (and fought, and fought with it until I found keto). I remember being told lots of risk factors: family history, alcohol, smoking (? they associated it with everything), diabetes, early menarche but I was NEVER told of the strong association with obesity. I've checked the resources I have (some going back 25 years, some more recent) but NONE draw attention to obesity.

I gave up alcohol as it did not react well with my AI treatment, just finishing up 5 yrs on AI and have no plans to ever drink again, I socialise more and enjoy myself more than when I drank, it is also a lot cheaper to go out. Once you stop and realise what a waste of money alcohol is and how damaging it can be on your body you start to wonder why you ever drank. Thankfully it is way more acceptable now (even in Ireland) to not drink and lots of great mocktails/zero alcohol options are available when you do go out.

Why didn’t I know this before? I used to have a glass of red wine a night - I thought it was supposed to be good for your heart. I’m in my 40’s and had otherwise been very health conscious. I grew up reading that a glass of red wine was good for you. I was diagnosed with ER+ and will have a mastectomy on Saturday I wish I had seen something like this before. I was having the wine because I thought it was good

What is the relation between Tamoxifen and alcohol? I feel I get drunk easier and my hangovers -even after small amounts of alcohol- last longer with Tamoxifen.
@DrLizORiordan
@DrLizORiordan 8 ай бұрын
I’m the same! It could be that tamoxifen and alcohol are broken down in the body by the same enzymes so that’s why the effects of alcohol are stronger
