Find out which castle you should go to when visiting this part of Romania! These are two of Romania's most famous castles, but after reading mixed reviews, we decided to head out there and see it for ourselves!
BRAN OR PELES CASTLE?
This might upset some people, but the way we look at it... we want you to have the BEST experience in Romania, so we had to be honest! It's better if you go back home telling everyone about how amazing your time in Romania was and recommend it, instead of feeling like you visited a tourist trap!
If you have any questions, let us know. We are always happy to help :)
Thanks so much for watching and for supporting our channel. We will see you on Sunday with a new video.
XO,
Aimara & Gordon

Thank you so much for watching our videos! Also, keep in mind that a lot of locals recommend visiting Corvin's Castle as well :) So, one more thing to do in Romania 🇷🇴 PS: we messed up the location of Peles Castle, since it's not in the Transylvania region as we said it in the intro. It's actually in the Muntenia region but easily reachable if you are in Transylvania as it is close to the border between the 2 regions :)

Guys, you're fun and nice. 🙂Loved watching your trek through our country. Couple of things, Peles can't be the prettiest castle in Transylvania, because... it's not in Transylvania. 😁Corvin Castle might be though, if you do get around to visit it. Also, Vlad's moniker "Dracul" does not stand for "the Devil". His family line was called the House of Drăculești. His father was Vlad II "Dracul", meaning Vlad the Second - the Dragon. Vlad the Impaler's name was Vlad III Drăculea, meaning Son of the Dragon. This is because his father was a member of a medieval chivalric order called the Order of the Dragon (or Societas Draconistarum), founded by Sigismund of Luxembourg, king of Hungary and Croatia, who later became the Holy Roman Emperor. 🙂

Yes, our bad :( We changed the tittle of the video but we can't change how we said it so we just clarified it in a comment that we pinned to the top so people can see it and not be confused :) And yes, we heard about Corvin after, but didn't get a chance to visit, but for sure will visit on our next Romania trip! And about Dracul we learned this later too, but too late because the video was already filmed and it was hard to fix it in the edit as it is sort of long to explain lol - but so confusing because we read the info online and then you use Google translate and it literally translates to 'the devil' hahaha 🙈 but anyways, nice to learn with you guys too ❤ Thanks so much for the kind words! We still have quite the few videos to share about your incredible country!

@@waysoftheworld_ It's tricky indeed, "drac/dracul" nowadays means the devil, indeed, but 500 years ago it meant the dragon, it's one of those words that changed it's meaning with time...
@m.dewylde5287

But Dracul stands exactly for "the devil". Sf. Arhanghel Mihail sfasaie Dragonul, este o poveste faimosa din biblie. Dragonul biblic este insusi dracul. Drago-Drac-Dracul. Therefore: Vlad Dracul = Vlad the Devil. q.u.e.d.
@costinhalaicu2746
@costinhalaicu2746 Жыл бұрын
@@m.dewylde5287 Draco literally meant "Dragon", not "Devil" in Latin. Keep in mind we are talking about people from the 1400s and before, not modern day people. They also adopted that title because they were dubbed members of the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order founded by Sigismund of Luxembourg, which in Latin was called... Societas Draconistarum. And yes, it mattered how it was named in Latin at the time, because it was the ecclesiastical language in Catholic Europe, and chivalric orders and the church had a lot of connections. His name had nothing to do with the Devil, but with the Dragon. Not synonyms. Don't be simplistic.

Great video! We did so many of the same things you did when we were there last month! We were lucky to visit Bran Castle on a not so busy day (Friday, Sept 2) and I enjoyed it quite a lot, actually. The setting on the hill is really dramatic. And at the top of the very narrow stairs at 2:55 there was music on the day we visited. I was really glad we went, and I liked the market a lot at the bottom of the hill. Once Rasnov reopens again in 2023, visitors can see a castle & hilltop fortress in close proximity to each other on the same day. Visiting Bran and Peles in the same day is pretty ambitious, especially if there are traffic problems on the E60 roadway, which occur frequently. Peles, to me at least, seems more like Biltmore House here in the US, than other European castles I've seen. They were built at roughly the same time so the similarities make sense. Like you say, every room at Peles is stunning. That dining room is just amazing! If I remember correctly, third floor was mostly apartments for the King's visitors, etc. so I don't think you missed very much. Thank you for the video, and so glad you enjoyed Romania (my grandfather's homeland).

Nice video, thank you! Although many people say that Peleș Castle is in Transylvania, this is false. Peleș Castle is in Wallachia (Muntenia), another region of Romania. Peleș Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathian Mountains, near Sinaia, in Prahova County, Romania, It was constructed (between 1873 and 1914) for King Carol I, who was the King of Romania (before the union of (small) Romania with Transylvania (1918).

As a turist yes Peles is more beautiful and if somene only has time or money for one to visit definetly Peles is the right choice but is not fair to compare in reality . Bran Castle is a fortress at origin . It was placed at the border do defend it and to colect border tax. Once you see it from this point of view it makes more sense . It was in a bad shape like 100 years ago and the town gave it to the royal family . The Queen made it a residence and was renovated to be more like a house than a military fortress . Peleș on the other hand is technicaly a palace . It may not be the biggest palace but it was build as a royal residence so it has all the beauty and the luxury . It even had a vacuum cleaning system . Next to it is Pelisor Castle . Is small and more like a home but it has a room covered in gold . For anyone going to Sinaia dont miss the monastery . Is at the begining of the road to the castle , is beautiful and free to see. Corvin Castel is the perfect medieval castle. It looks exactly as people expect , a true fantasy come true. Is unfortunately quite empty inside but it does worth a stop .

If you get to Sibiu and then you want to drive to Alba Iulia, there's a great scenic road you can choose, instead of the highway: through Slimnic (which has an amazing citadel on a hill), Mandra, Pauca all the way to Teius, a bit north of Alba Iulia. It's very little known and in great shape (at least up to Alba county line). Farther away, if you get to Northern Transylvania, Bistrita-Nasaud county's mountains are impressive (try Colibita lake) and from there you get get to Moldavia (Suceava county) where there are some beautiful medieval monasteries built by Stephen the Great. They stand out by being painted woth images on the outside too and for the architecture (Moldovita, Sucevita, Voronet are the most famous ones, also in beautiful mountain sorroundings). Btw, for a more Western Europe medieval feel, north of Sibiu there are a lot of medieval fortified churches (in Biertan, Viscri- new king Charles III owns properties in the village, Saschiz, some of the more famous ones)

Only Romanians can understand how the Ottomans were for us and what we had to do to keep them from invading. For most Romanians, Vlad is a hero. Also, don't judge actions from the 15th century to today's standards. I'm sure western countries or kingdoms were not that great either with respecting human rights and all of that. I mean, the USA still has the capital punishment to this day. Granted, they don't impale them, but the outcome is still the same. No offense. I like you guys. I really do. But don't judge something you know very little about. PS: I don't like violence either and looking forward to your next videos.

@@zerefcifer agreed. But again just our opinion and how we see things. No one is saying the US is great here... and I'm not American, I'm Venezuelan, my country is not great either.. we are not comparing. Of course we respect Romanians and how you feel about Vlad, but we are not Romanian, we didn't live in the 15th century and we are who we are now. That's how we see things. At any moment we are trying to know better than locals, that's impossible. But it is also impossible for us to look at things the same as we have different backgrounds. We are on your side here believe or not, spending our money and working really hard to make decent videos so more tourists can visit your beautiful country. We share what we learn in museums, historic walking tours and what we read. We try to educate ourselves to provide basic information to foreigners who maybe don't know much about Romania. And we are allowed to have opinions and share them.

@@waysoftheworld_ His acts of bravery are much more resounding than the impaling of enemies, who in turn punished the populations of countries that did not obey or conquered territories. Those were the times, they were all barbarians. However, Vlad is not only the hero of the Romanians, he is also a defender of Christianity in these areas of Europe... together with Stephen the Great of Moldavia and János Hunyadi, the regents of Hungary opposed the Ottoman expansion in western Europe... we cannot know , but probably without "these sadistic barbarians" today most of Europe was Muslim...so EVIL can become GOOD in centuries.

Vlad Dracul was a hero. Vlad the Dragon. The impalement was something the ottoman turks used for capital punishment. Since he was a hostage of Ottoman Empire, he learned just about anything. So he used their tactics against them when time had come. He didn't kill his own people unless they crossed the line with the crimes. The forest of impaled people were turks not vallachians. That stuff with the blood bread and women impaled with their babies is just bs. Everyone around Romania had to make him a bad guy and a monster because he didn't want to bow to no one. Austro-Hungarian Empire and those Ottoman Turks didn't like that. Politics now and forever.

I choose Peleș Castlle any time off the day and in every season. I love both but Peleș Castlle for me is the best! 🥰 You don' t know what otomans did, they force us to believe and pray to Allah not God , they raped our womens, they did horiblle thinks ,so Vlad only wanted to defend Romania and punish they re war crimes. He was cruell but he had a reason for beeing so cruel. And Vlad punished also like that the ppl hwo stole or did bad thinks, his method was unortodox but paied off🥰. We still have a saying in România when someone does a really bad think or a mass off ppl :" Unde ești tu Țepeș doamne" - " God where are you Țepeș" 😁

The way you painted Vlad Tepes as an evil dude who killed for pleasure is just wrong. Those were medieval times. Vlad used torturing methods, yes. But times were as such. Other rulers around the world used beheadings, burning people at the stake, etc. It's not like he was the only one. The people who he executed were definitely not nice guys. They were murderers, r.p.ers, and invading soldiers. It's fine to have an opinion, but don't insult a national hero in the process, especially since I bet you only did 5 minutes of research on the topic. It's like me saying The Lord of the Rings is bad after reading only the synopsis on imdb. Don't judge a book by its covers. And don't insult people, especially historical figures of other people's countries. ;)

That's just I wanted to say. Those were the medieval times and all the rulers of that time used the same barbaric methods of killing and torturing the enemies or criminals. Also Vlad was a victim of the Austro Hungarian empire fake propaganda because he often didn't please their demands.

Hey Peter - thanks for the comment. We first learned about Vlad III on a historic walking tour in Bucharest, where they described how he dealt with his enemies and common criminals. And then we did our own research. We missed on fully understanding the extent that he is considered a national hero by many in Romania. And we apologize for that. Based on the sources out there, he did kill a lot more people beyond just invading Ottoman soldiers. Including women and children... in very cruel ways. And our opinion is that 'those were the times' or 'he was not the only one' does not forgive people for cruelty (I'm not talking about what he did in the context of war). It is possible to be two things at the same time: 1) someone who protected what is now Romania and the rest of Europe from invaders & 2) someone who had extreme ways of eliminating his enemies - which, again, based on information available to us, included many more than just invading soldiers. We're happy to learn more about this if you have better/more accurate information than what we could find about him.

6:55 imagine how inaccessible it is for the locals if foreigners (which usually come from 1st world countries like USA, UK, Canada, Germany, etc) find this expensive. And yes, I do agree with you that it's bloody expensive. We, Romanians, need to get our shit together on many things, and one of those things is greed. For decades nobody's visited this Castle and we survived just fine and now, when there are millions of visitors each year, instead of making it affordable to everyone so that everyone can win, we drool at the sight of money and make it inaccessible to most people. Such dumb, stupid, idiotic, typical Romanian greed and retardness... I swear on my life that sometimes I hate that I'm Romanian :(

1:15 why do all foreigners consider Vlad the Impaler to be evil *SMH* ... Vlad is a national hero, lady! He had brought law and order to these forsaken lands filled with crime at that time. Yes, the method he used to punish the criminals had been inhumane by today's standards, but during those times it was necessary because there was no fix for the high thievery and murdering rates that ruled our lands. Besides, he learned the method of impaling people from the Ottomans to whom Vlad had been kept captive after being stolen from his parents (the Ottoamsn abducted our kids each year to turn them into homosexuals and Janisarries for the empire's army). Why does Vlad get so much negative publicity when he's a real hero in reality? That's just not fair :(
