I ended up figuring out a while ago that I am secretly a Boros player. My first three commander decks were Jeskai, Naya, and then Mardu. It is the most common color combination in any of my 2- or 3-color decks (though Azorius is tied at the moment).

@@eewweeppkkEhh, not sure I’d go that far. Maybe the best +1/+1 counter color combo if you don’t want to break the bank, but an optimized Vorinclex, MR deck will perform as well or a bit better IMO. Outside of Vorinclex exclusively, though, I’d give it up to Selesnya for having more diverse options and a bit deeper toolbox. Who’s your #1 Selesnya pick for +1/+1? I would really, really like to see both Mono Green and Selesnya get some more Commanders that really pack a punch. I kinda see it as a design misstep on WotC’s part to ignore a number of two-color identities in favor of doing many of one or two three-color identities. I know they do it for greed’s sake to keep people chasing cut-rate dual lands, but c’mon. Several of these two-color identities are slipping in the rankings for the same reason. Lack of new Commanders/Commanders as strong or stronger than preexisting ones in the identity.

There's pretty clearly been a BIG focus from Wizards to give white and red and boros a ton of support for commander. I pointed this out to my cousin just barely. We've gotten 13 Naya commanders just in the last 6 months, and 22 BOROS commanders too! And this shouldn't be too surprising, since the majority of recent pre-cons have been 3-color, and lots have included white and red together!

Wizards completely overhauling boros colors to be actually viable (ie adding card draw and good finishers and legends) is probably the best decision they’ve made in the past decade imo. So, to finish this off (as of 5/10/2024): #27: Witch-Maw (50,685) Notworthy commanders: Atraxa, Praetors' Voice (32,287 decks) Atraxa, Grand Unifier (10,725 decks) Thrasios, Triton Hero & Tynma the Weaver (4,408 decks) #28: Ink-Traders (37,156) Noteworthy commanders: Omnath, Locus of Creation (13,165 decks) Aragorn, the Uniter (11,632 decks) Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis (6,902 decks) #29: Colorless (34,984) Noteworthy commanders: Zhulodok, Void Gorger (10,256 decks) Kozilek, the Great Distortion (6,793 decks) #30: Yore-Tiller (23,741) Noteworthy commanders: Breya, Etherium Shaper (12,371 decks) Kraum, Ludevic's Opus & Tymna the Weaver (5056 decks) #31: Glint-Eye (12,100) Noteworthy commander: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder (6,342 decks) And last and certainly least, the least popular color is: #32: Dune-Brood (8606) Noteworthy commander: Saska the Unyielding (5,375) It's fascinating to note, in contrast to Multicolored's 186,765 decks, Four-color identities have NOT been getting ANY love. These color combinations are dominated by a handful of commanders which often make up over half of the decks they are representing.

> Izzet To avoid Izzet spellslinger? Easy, there's partner combinations and Background combinations. Try Karlach//Charlatan with combat damage triggers and high power creatures, giving it the occasional support of other good attack trigger creatures. Even Livaan//Sailor has ways to facilitate non-sorcery, non-instant methods of taking advantage of her ability. > Lathril and Miirym Being able to **facilitate** certain colors with certain tribes, then combining such with the lure of power... well, those two are definitely going to be extremely enticing. Lathril having access to black removal and Golgari value helps to 'do the thing,' so it's THAT much easier to have fun 'doing the thing.' Miirym facilitates copying legendary dragons, and having busted torrents of value is going to be quite the siren's call. It is quite the rush to play with heaps of high power. My alternatives are Skanos//Acolyte and Viconia//Giants, because I like the idea of flying under the radar until I can stomp like crazy. I'm looking forward to another Tarkir set next year, and I may eventually finally get enough pieces to make Golgari elves fun for me. Of course, the 98 of the former has Old Gnawbone, and the 98 of the latter has Lathril, so there's some considerable power in both builds.
@Yourbeautiful666
@Yourbeautiful666 24 күн бұрын
The funny thing is about these most popular decks is that they’re basically all the same deck. Usually if you’ve seen it once, you’ve seen the rest, as they are rarely built differently apart from doing “the thing”. Feather for example, you play spells that target feather, then you do the same thing the following turn. And all feather decks do that, because it’s “the thing” in feather. So it’s makes it really easy to counter these decks, because you already know the game plan before it happens. Only rarely you get someone mixing up a deck by running something different like Prosper, Tome Bound as a Rakdos control deck with land destruction value. Or Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer as red 1 drop tribal with aggressive red creatures.
@Controlqueen31
@Controlqueen31 19 күн бұрын
While I agree that some decks are easy to stop, you need to have the cards to do so. A good Feather player will never play her without at least one protection spell, or even two if the table has color combinations with a lot of removal spells. It is clear that the vast majority of commanders go for what they were are made for, except for those that are good cards themselves (like Kenrith) or can generate several possible strategies because they generate value themselves (Prosper). And within this world, there are strategies that are very easy to protect with the right cards. I have a Jeska/Ishai deck that is not cEDH, but high level casual. Between Cavern of Souls, the amount of counters, draw spells and removals I have, my strategy is very simple because it depends on my opponents playing the game, which is a must for them. Once Ishai is ready, I triple her damage and kill the most problematic opponent. And so on with the other two on the next two turns.
@Yourbeautiful666
@Yourbeautiful666 19 күн бұрын
@@Controlqueen31 That’s what I mean though. You expect the feather player to cast feather when it makes sense to cast feather, like with protection or when everyone is out of resources. So you just gotta do what you can to not give them the opportunity, otherwise they’re just going to loop the same turn over and over again, cus that’s all feather does. Same thing with Jeska/Ishai, we kind of already know the strategy is to swing with big bird. Yes you need the cards to deal with these things, or just cards to outrun them, but my point is mostly that when you see these decks at a table, you more or less already know what your game plan should be to go against them. You just have to play well and hope that plan works out. The decks just aren’t typically unique, so the answers to go against them have been solved already. I have a Meren of Clan Nel Toth deck that plans on reanimating things from the graveyard and to eventually win through Protean Hulk lines, or other combos on the end step. Pretty typical of a Meren deck. I have an Azami, Lady of Scrolls deck which plans to draw cards into extra turns or a Thassa’s Oracle/Laboratory Maniac combo. Also pretty typical for an Azami deck. But I have an Archangel Avacyn deck that people assume is a weenie token deck that will swarm the board with creatures, but it’s a Boros control/land destruction deck that plans to get ahead on resources, and deny others theirs by making treasures, and blowing up lands while protecting my own. Or my Tymna/Kraum deck that people assume is a blue farm deck, but it’s just a Nekusar wheels deck that splashes white for smothering tithe and a few other cards to assemble a terrible combo.

@@totakekeslider3835 I get it but all decks are becoming good stuff. Especially the closer they get to optimal. I look at it as a journey through collection and concept until one maxes out the threshold of 100 cards. Then a new journey to build another begins. I have about 15 decks but my 5c gets the most love, contemplation and play. Because the other decks are so concentrated that playing them doesn't seem interesting. Very linear and predictable. I seldom see surprise off-theme variants in the restricted colors. Like a monoblue voltron Goldberry deck for example. Everyone is just using goodsuff commanders. Ive been working on an equipment based recursive ability deck. As an example look at most of the new precon commanders- they are mostly doing something every turn while they are on board. I put something together that just protects them so they stay on the field as long as possible. It's funny because most of them are mixed pip mana values and jegantha can be a companion. This works with mose of the newer precon secondary commanders as well. WotC is always printing across the color and typal spectrum. It's only a matter of time until the print something you truly adore and it's best, funnest and most interesting pieces and synergies pull you into 5c. I personally don't intend on building 50 Kenrith decks but in the end I realize that I can use just one Kenrith to play in 50 themes of the years and it will give me peace of mind when I build for each theme. It's why I sleeved all my cards the same so I can always change my mind and nothing is ever stuck in a dusty deckbox storage deathtrap. Plus I spend less time and expense on storage, sleeves, time and gain more freedom with imagination. I guess if you're wondering why I would want to build a 5c ability recursion deck the answer is simple- Most players just want to do a bunch of good stuff on their turns.
@Badassest
@Badassest 27 күн бұрын
@@totakekeslider3835 one caveat to the way I deck build is there is no real synergy. Its meant quite specifically to something different every game. There are almost zero related support cards for any particular theme so it may actually never be linear or predictable and each time an opponent plays against it they will never feel like they are playing against the same deck unless they think about it in generalized terms. Each game in a session is quite personal. I would like to think if the average win rate is around 25% one fourth of any game in a pod of four (which is probably mathematically actually 12.5%) then I would rather play with and look at the cards I find most interesting in the most accessible way possible. Gonna be bored 87.5% of the time other people are doing their crazy idea of good stuff lol.

When the new Rowan came out, I was happy because I thought that another Rakdos commander will get almost as many decks as Prosper giving the right amount of time, cause she is powerful and something "new" (there is another loose life Rakdos legend but I can't remember his name and, compared to Rowan, he is not that powerful). I say this because, when you speak about the difference in numbers between Sythis decks and Arabo's, is very important to note that the top commander of each color/color combination is very powerful, maybe not to reach cEDH, but powerful in casual tables, like Sythis. Also, this commanders build themselves cause they are so simple, their strategy is so powerful or they are just plainly good, or even a combination of the three. PD: When we reach three color combinations is when I feel bad for some of them, like Jund. There are a lot of funny and fairly good Jund commanders, but the two most used are Windgrace and Korvold, and that's all. There are no other Jund commanders that reach the level of playability or power of those two. And that's why I think Wizards needs to try and create more powerful commanders with other strategies. The Jund legend that mana burns your opponets is fun and some fresh air, but is so bad compared to those two.

I think 5 color is so popular because everyone of the commanders is wildly different in olay style from the last with a few exceptions. They are always super narrow like dragons, slivers, legendary typal. It also seems a lot of old commanders that have broader build paths have fallen to very streamlined commanders, commanders that tell you what to focus on in deck building.

I play a lot of Jeskai: Eowyn, Commodore Guff, and I just took my Kykar deck apart to built the new Narset. Very different play styles between all three. A friend of mine built Hinata and never plays it anymore. I think the deck looks very cool but in fact is pretty linear both to build and play. Do people see Hinata decks at tables? If you have one, do you play it much? As for Bant, I think only Bernard has been very interesting recently. I have a feeling we’ll see a lot of Kellan, the Kid decks boosting the numbers a little. Abzan got tons of attention with new ideas, none of them quite grabbed me. Anikthea is cool. I’m still thinking of building Wernog and Othelm (Will and Mike from Stranger Things) but keep building other things instead that I can do more cheaply and easily with increased confidence that they’ll work.

I love my Liesa, Shroud of Dusk deck. She’s a sneaky control commander who’s also a big beat stick that you’ll always have mana to recast and finish the game with. It’s one of my highest win rate decks and I’m not surprised people enjoy it. I also play Henzie, it’s not nearly as powerful as Korvold but it’s a fun deck and I get to run big Timmy creatures that don’t fit in my others and do some graveyard shenanigans. I just built Stella Lee as my first Izzet deck and one of my spikiest. When Kykar was my spellslinger deck I didn’t want an Izzet one, but Stella and Narset are different enough for me to enjoy both decks. I play Kinnan but rarely pull him out, don’t want to build him competitive and the casual version still swings a little hard for many tables. I bought the Hakbal precon to play with a friend who was learning on his own precons and I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I really don’t get what’s confusing you about Miirym. People love dragons, they’re iconic fantasy creatures that do impressive things on the table. People also love copying stuff, commanders that multiply permanents or triggers are popular all over (hence Lucea Kane, who I can confirm is tons of fun). You don’t have to combo out or do big brain plays to win with Miirym, just ramp and play your favorite creatures out. You don’t have to build a five color mana base like you do with Ur Dragon, either. I think the format has more Timmies (or at least players who love to indulge that side of themselves with one silly dragon deck) than you assume. I’ve still never built a Grixis deck. Sauron, the Dark Lord appeals to me but much less so given that I’m not willing to buy 9 Nazgul to run. Eventually I’ll proxy the 6 I still need and build him. I don’t think Sauron ever catches Nekusar, who works great as a spicy casual commander and is also fine for cEDH.

My friend who’s just started playing immediately bought 3 Naya precons (Pantlaza, Rin and Seri secret lair, Dogmeat). The combo is getting tons of attention lately and people love dinosaurs. I’m not surprised Pantlaza is popular, the other good dinosaurs are “drop when it’s time to end the game” types, whereas Pantlaza shows up earlier and adds value. Ishin is another “Demo doesn’t understand how much people love doubling stuff” commander. He’s also much nastier in practice than I even expected by reading him. He’s so good that he edges out a lot of other Mardu attacking-based commanders. I built Caesar as the swingy token deck I’ve always wanted and threw Ishin in the 99. The new treasure guy from OTC is gonna be popular too. People have been itching to use their treasure stuff in more decks than Prosper.

Played against Hinata a few times and I think the problem is its power, it's always quite boring because either you kill Hinata right away (on the hinata player turn), or they just win. So the games this deck creates are not really interesting. Hinata seems fine in very high power though, if everything is a threat that needs to be answered then maybe it survives a turn.
@Wojtek36762
@Wojtek36762 24 күн бұрын
@@nicolasperrin4518 yeah that’s more or less what I’ve seen, and it would fit with a deck a bunch of people built but rarely play. EDHRec tracks decks modified in the past 2 years, and we’re about 2 years out from KND’s release. If Hinata takes a big dive over the next year, it’ll indicate that a lot of people who built the deck shelved it almost immediately.

ThalRog & The Hobbits in particular was massive for Abzan, but it's clear wizards saw how down Abzan & Jeskai were considering how many precons they made for them. ThalRog was my commander of the year last year, and I predicted it'd not only top Abzan, but be top 5 overall for 2023. (Almost got it, top 6) Whilst Jeskai did get a ton of support last year, most of the strategies & commanders had a hard time working out properly for the color combination. Interesting ideas, but not enough to really execute on. I'm an azorius player at heart, so I really want to like both Bant & Jeskai, but every Jeskai deck I've built just doesn't feel right or always feels like it's missing something to really be fun to play, meanwhile Azorius just feels more concise and the commanders more appealing, even the less popular ones. I do have Galea which is fun, but zero interest in Bant outside of that.

Relatively few new Bant and Simic Commanders, and some of the few we did get were very scattered in their functionality, so there are other options to do what they do better. For example: Galadriel, Light of Valinor looks great at a glance. Until you ask yourself what kind of deck do you want her to helm? Scry & Draw is better in Simic, +1/+1 Counters better in a number of more stable base-green or just Mono Green (Vorinclex, MR, my #1). Chulane does it differently, but I think he fills the role she was aimed at in a categorically better manner.

I’m surprised at how surprised you are that miirym is the third most popular commander. I would argue that dragons, humans, elves, and goblins are the most popular tribes in magic. And I don’t think goblins, elves, or humans have a commander that just give you a free copy for casting another creature of the same tribe. So it’s a perfect storm really: incredibly busted ability for an incredibly popular tribe Edit to add: same thing with Lathrill. Popular tribe meets crazy ability. Tapping 10 elves in an elf all deck is not hard at all. The hard part is keeping Lathrill around through all the removal she’ll be facing

both those commanders to me are again products of people just not running enough boardwipes. the fact that you think getting 10 creatures in play is no problem at all really speaks to that.

@dreyfus37_65 27 күн бұрын
@@edhdeckbuilding that’s a fair point. I don’t think it’s easy for any deck or any tribe to get 10 creatures out. I think goblins and elves are by far the easiest tribes to do it in. Both are really good at spitting out tokens of that tribe. You just look at the goblin player funny and they make 20 1/1 goblins. I also think, by and large, removal in general has taken a dip in casual commander. Board wipes and single targeted removal.

Unfortunately, when I first started playing, I played green and anything but Boros, but when I kept hearing that Boros was terrible--I got sick of it. I challenged myself to prove them wrong and now (eight years later) I have 7 very different Boros decks that range from "5" to "9" and they are not even the most popular options Boros offers. Players still scoff to this day when I bring any one of the 7 out to rumble, but they are either corrected, or warned, by another player who knows my decks well or are eating their words after I've won. After all that, the reality still rings true: a deck (or color in this instance) is only as good as the player.
