Which Coloured Pencils to Use When Drawing a Golden Retriever | Colour Recipe

A quick, one-off video for you all. I really love Golden Retrievers (who doesn’t?), but I do find them quite challenging to draw. The colours and tones in their fur can often be a little difficult to get right, so I wanted to share a quick colour recipe for you all, introducing you to the colours I decided to use for this drawing, in hopes that it will help you if you decide to draw a Golden Retriever or an animal with golden fur.
I hope you enjoy and find this useful! Apologies for the background noise. My dogs like to get involved!

Caran D’Ache Luminance: Buff Titanium, Brown Ochre 10%, Dark Flesh 5%, Burnt Sienna 10%, Sepia 10%, Naples Ochre, Raw Umber

Goldens are so difficult to get right-they have such an identifiable expression on their face, never mind the subtlety of the colors. You really nailed it! Gorgeous!

It is strange to me how challenging is to draw a golden. I have two dogs - one of no clear origin and one golden. My golden princes is by far more difficult to get right. I am drawing again after 15 years, and the idea of trying color pencils is becoming verry aluring while waching your videos. Thanks for sharing your work! The colours in this one is the colours of my golden girl and I really like how you embrace the not very sharp photo and run with it! The softness of this drawing is very golden retriever like. 😍

Very goood . Very helpful. I love the soft pinks. They give a nice rest for the eyes and I love how you’ve gone so sparingly on the yellows. Those hints of lemon sneaking through the lovely creams and warm pinks are just so pretty. My eyes keep seeking them out and as they wander searching, it all comes together and the most honest blonde is revealed. It really shows how restraint can do the heavy lifting. Thanks Bonny. I’ve really got a clear plan now for my next light animal.

Beautiful- lovely to see how much realism can be achieved without drawing every hair. It still appears detailed but with a lovely natural softness. I love my derwent drawing pencils

Very soft and beautiful! It seems to me that the Derwent drawing pencil line has some very similar ones in the Lightfast group. I find it easy to get wax bloom with the first ones but am enjoying the mixture of the different ones and it certainly is a great idea when the photo is a bit blurred. Another beauty! I debated about how much really the difference is between the 10% brown ochre, the new flesh tone that is really light, the Naples and the wheat from the Lightfast. Those lights really help. I ordered some from Holbein for the same reason. Your painting is just really sweet.

You are amazing with colored pencils, Bonny! Have you ever painted a German short-haired pointer? I have one and have been having a ton of trouble painting the ticking of his liver and white coat and making it look natural. I hope with practice and determination I can master the colored pencil just as you have. Thanks for all you share on here.

I noticed the dog reference. I had one for over 15 years and she literally brought dinner to the back door. This is funny but I too have one in my to do pile. I have considered doing the liver spotting underneath because of those short white hairs on top. I definitely will be practicing with my exacto and maybe trying it out on drafting film. I would love to see both of your ideas too. And their sheen can be a bit tricky. Nothing like a good challenge to hone in the craft.

@@jenniefrench1338 I was able to get a decent replication of him on suede mat board a year or so ago, but that was before I knew about using exacto or slice knives. Thanks for the ideas. GSPs are a lot of fun. They're so intelligent and loyal and just the right amount of crazy! lol

@@adamjohns5278 oh for sure lol!! Not so sure about the intelligence factor I think that their whole brain was for the hunt. My German Shepherd was her director and babysitter. Little did I know that they had plans every day and worked out their plans. I could tell so many stories about their devices and how they took out a huge clan of coyotes that were attacking the herd. Crazy dogs!

damn aparently there is no a "polychromos version" of "brown ochre 10 percent". it looks very lovely, is like "skin" color but a bit of yellow

Yeah polys don’t have those lovely earthy colours. You could try a bit of cream and cinnamon 🥰

beautiful tutorial as always, I’ve very recently started drawing realistic animals with coloured pencils (arteza/ polychromos on canson 1557 paper) having watched various tutorials I am unable to produce fine lines without them disappearing/ blending to form a new colour for the fur effect I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to create them?
