Iceland became an independent country from Denmark in 1944, but has no armed forces. Iceland is however a NATO member and has currently forces from other Nordic countries serving to protect their airspace. Greenland could adopt a similar model, becoming member of NATO, not having their own military, but continuing relying on forces from the US and Nordic countries.

Iceland became an independent country in 1918. The kingdom of Iceland had the same king as the Kingdom of Denmark, but the Danish government had no authority there. Iceland became a republic in 1949.

Greenland is a full NATO member with its own NATO representative separate to Denmark. The US also already has a base in Greenland and contributes to its defence along with Denmark. Giving Greenland full independence isn’t going to suddenly make them vulnerable to attack or influence from other countries. They know their own value and deserve to handle negotiations and decisions themselves

@Zaydan Alfariz Even with less than half a million people, Brunei has almost 10 times the population of Greenland (which sits around 56.000 without much growth) and an army of over 7000 active duty soldiers. If you want a Greenlandic military of even, for the sake of argument, a third of Brunei's number of soldiers, you will need to put more than 4% of the entire population of the country in uniform. Not impossible... but certainly very unlikely. In practice, Nato membership is likely to be enough of a guarantee for Greenland in most matters due to how important the US considers the island to be. This is fortunate, because it is likely the only security guarantee that they would have, outside some residual defence activities from the Danish military. All that said, I think Greenland should be an independent country, and however soon it happens, it would not have been soon enough in my eyes. Much love from Denmark.

The obstacle to Greelandic independence isn't really defense/military. The US would never allow e.g. Russia to take over the territory, so they'd always be protected. The issue is economic. Right now something like 50% of Greenland's budget is covered by subsidy from Denmark. If they went independent they'd be dead broke. Everything has to be imported at high expense and the settlements are spread out with no road network to connect them, making just getting around and transporting goods very expensive compared to Iceland. To overcome this they'd have to sell mineral extraction/exploration contracts, but from what I've read the people are more opposed to that than they are in favor of independence.

Somaliland, basically already a sovereign nation since 1992, just need recognition. The UN and the AU won't recognize Somaliland due to fears of ethnic tensions in other African nations becoming voices of independence if Somaliland gets recognized as an sovereign nation. I think Africa could be a continent to look for multiple new nations forming in the future.

Well the UN and the AU have a skill issue, cus they can't keep Africa in this frozen state of being permanently in the year 1950. Things have to change, and it's gonna be the Africans doing it this time. Much blood was shed after the fall of Rome to decide what Europe would look like in the future... imagine some hyperpower existed back then deciding to freeze the borders of states permanently in the year 500 AD... Europe would have been permanently stunted.

Yea. The real reason most of these autonomous regions in the video are not independent yet because they are given a huge of free money and subsidies. Basically bribing them to stay with the nation. The African independence movements are different though and a lot more prone to conflict.

The context in TNG was "examples of terrorism being an effective way to promote political change", which was a pretty irresponsible thing to be broadcasting during the (ultimately successful) peace process.

Tbf it was a fairly inflammatory and in practice honestly dangerous statement in the early 70s I know that sounds like bollocks but you had segments of two completely segregated communities consistently looking for a justification for armed action and this is that from a not particularly serious but independent observer.

Between World War II and 1986, they 🇫🇲 were part of America's *Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands* , which also included the Marshall Islands 🇲🇭, the Northern Mariana Islands 🇲🇵, and Palau 🇵🇼-but not Guam 🇬🇺 (American since 1898) or American Samoa and Swain's Island 🇦🇸 (since 1918). Micronesia and the Marshall Islands broke away peacefully, but the Northern Mariana Islands asked to remain American, in the (extremely faint) hope of one day achieving statehood. Considering how important the Pacific Ocean has now become with China's ascension, is it too far-fetched that all of those insular areas could one day become a state-or perhaps part of Hawaii? Or is there too much ethnic bad blood?

@@TheEightfoldWay There is the case of the future Chuuk State referendum on Micronesia, the Micronesian government has postponed it time and again(third delays truly) and is particularly relevant cause they are the most populous state on the Federation and given the Compact of Free Association was going to be adjusted on 2023 it all crashes together. But really the Chuuk really had an awful position on Micronesia(really strange that none of these KZfaqrs have made videos about the movement,campaign etc pretty underrated), where a majority of their population is unemployed, their cultural identity hanging on the balance as well as the always contentious matter of distribution of funding within the FSM.

@@grantorino2325 man the US should have made them real territories. The reason they broke away unlike the US’s other territories the US only minimally supported and developed them. But instead by becoming free associated the Us basically gets everything they could ever want from they with none of the responsibilities to support them or try improve them. So they are half the quality of life compared to the US’s territories, which are in turn of the average of US states.

Greenland will struggle. Denmark currently loses money by having greenland due it Denmark paying greenland a grant every year, and is not able to exploit Greenlands resources, which only greenland is allowed to do. As a dane, I think that if Greenland wants to he independent, let them, we will save money, however i worry that Greenland would be open to exploitation by China, Russia or even the US. If Greenland wants to stay as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, thats cool too, and probably best until they can be more self sufficient

Greenland is 100% dead weight for Denmark. The Danes pay for everything, and Greenland wants to keep any money for themselves. It's a lot of money to give away on a population that will leave the second it suits them.

If French Polynesia gains independence, i think the difference between Tahitians and Marquesans may make two different countries. Both groups were colonized by the French, but they are two different groups of Polynesians.

I'm Irish (south of Ireland). I support unification although I care immensely about peace, so while I want it to happen I would much rather it happen in 30-40 years from now rather than, in say 10-15 years. Waiting until later in the century would give better chances of a smoother and more peaceful transition to a united Ireland.

I think the "shared island" approach the Republic's government is working on is a good start. It'll make things much smoother and shows Northern Irish people the benefit of a united country. Especially has they are pretty much ignored by Westminster...

As a Dane I welcome Greenland independence, I mean they are more or less in many aspects but before it can Happen I believe Greenland needs to be in a far better position where it can defend its own borders or be able to withstand preassures from the US, Russia and China. They wan’t those sweet resources and right now I don’t feel comfortable for greenland to have self rule.

Haha, the comments kind of prove your point already. I think the proposed structure where Denmark is still involved with the country's defence would be best, so that they can make their own decisions without the threat of military pressure from said countries.

General knowledge does this sort of thing frequently and there is no shortage of places where you can find a group who want to talk about independence. Like, for example, Scania in Sweden. But boundaries don't like to change, although they will if they're more trouble than ther're worth.

@@gavasiarobinssson5108unnily enough Skaane (including Halland and Blekinge) is the only part of Imperial Sweden that the Swedes haven't transferred back to the original owners (although Denmark actually conquered it twice, first time in the Scanian War in 1679, second time in the Great Northern War in 1720 - but England didn't want Denmark to own both sides of the Sound).

@@wdmc2012 it came very close, and it was always an extremely serious movement. After the narrow referendum loss in 1995, the separatist movement has been slowly losing stream ever since.

@@wdmc2012 Quebec independence movement is several orders of magnitude more serious than any Texan claims to statehood. There's almost zero serious desire for independence in Texas while something like half of Quebecers want independence. That said, speaking purely pragmatically, current situation is probably best possible situation for both Quebec and Canada where Quebec gets to be their own unique society passing whatever laws they want regardless of what the rest of Canada thinks of them or if they would even be legal in the rest of Canada while still benefitting from Canada's market, budget, stability, size, defense etc. In turn, Canada gets to keep the country intact, gets to pretend Quebec is just like the rest of Canada and Canada isn't awkwardly split in two by an independent Quebec.

My impression is that the desire for Quebec independence is not as strong as in 1995. But I've always thought Quebec could develop more soft power in Canada by being and advocate other minorities in Canada, especially natives. Perhaps it could coach the Inuit provinces on protecting their own distinct cultures, or help the large francophone populations in Ontario and New Brunswick assert their identities.

It is evident that they do, hence they are doing it slow. Greenland is well aware that they are likely going to be the centre of an international mining boom in the second half of the century as the ice melts. Numerous mining companies have already started exploration and mining operations in anticipation. They know they have to get it right if they are going to handle the huge influx of money properly.

In the short term Bouganille would probably do well economically as it has 1 of the largest copper reserves in the world. The mine was very profitable but was forced to close in 1989 due to the conflict. There are also substantial deposits of gold , estimated at the least 12 million ounces. Long term viability would depend on management or they might end up like Nauru.

Hopefully Kurdistan, Nagorno-Karabakh, & Taiwan, and it would be nice to see Western Sahara, Tibet, Xingiang, Somaliland, Somali, Tigray, Buryatia, Chechnya, Circassia, Tartarstan, and honestly Hawaii & Inner Mongolia. Maybe some of the Burmese secessionists ethnic regions too since they have fought for it so long.

That is not true, Scottish Independence in Scotland is still strong even with SNP and they would view SNP's latest shenanigans as nothing more than a road bump. In fact, Scottish independence isn't shrinking but in fact it *GROWING* As there are more young people in Scotland who want independence and in the decade or so there will be more than enough for Scots to desire to leave the UK. Just last week in a poll there are still more than 45% of Scotland wanted to leave

If DRC ever stabilised sufficiently, the two Congos would make sense as one nation. Another one is Republika Srpska in Bosnia.. lessers there periodically threaten to hold an independence vote, which would likely mean joining Serbia. It’s borders are a complete mess though so could (re)open a whole can of worms

Moldavia reunification with Romania seems the most feasible in medium term. Then Irish unification and finally Congo one, the latter is the most complicated due to the lack of stability in the DRC.

There are political movements in South Africa trying to get independence for the Western Cape and any province willing to follow. Probably not very soon, or ever...but never know what might happen after the next election

The ANC will win the next elections. The suggestion that it might not is the local media's latest selling/click baiting strategy (which is a global trend), but do we really believe our fellow South Africans in Transkei and Natal will start voting differently next year? Also the whole Cape independence thing is already being labelled "racist" so when it comes to asking the international community for recognition it would be a tough question for the West, who are very sensitive to that word. And the Chinese and Russians would certainly pick the ANC's side. But hey, maybe, someday, Cape Town can be free to do its own thing. It could seriously be a little Singapore in Africa. If only they'd let us.

Things like that tend to only happen after a major disaster or war. Which could always happen especially with how corrupt politics in South Africa tend to be. The Zulu and the Xhosa would probably get their own countries as a result.

In the event of Irish unification AND Scottish independence, wouldn't England (or England and Wales, if they choose to be called that) be considered a "new country" as well? After all, they couldn't really call themselves the United Kingdom, or even Great Britain, anymore.

It was never even a unified entity, but a collection of smaller principalities occasionally under the overlordship of a single prince, but never a kingdom in and of itself. This is why I think "England and Wales" in the style of "Bosnia and Herzegovina" or "Antigua and Barbuda" would be the most likely name.

Just got back from French Polynesia, and personally I think independence would be a mistake. After Hawaii they're pretty much the second most visited place in the Pacific, and the reason for that is because they're part of France so people view it as a safe bet.

An independence wont happen and youre right it would be a mistake because the coyntry doesnt make any profit by itself: tourism isnt sustainable since its very expensive and both europeans and americans could go to other places and pay less (maldives, carribeans etc...) There are also no industry that could sustain the way of life of the polynesians (the wellfare system is already collapsing even though france is contributing to it so imagine without any help)

Based solely off the redrawing of the map, feels like this video failed a little bit. There’s a whole host of places that want independence, yet are unlikely to achieve it. I was personally hoping this video would cover countries which are independent yet not on your standard western map, like Somaliland and Taiwan. Perhaps some of the most probably causes of countries in places which are still trying to find their exact borders like much of Africa with the insurgencys in Mali and Cameroon (The two that I can remember off the top of my head)

The Faroe Islands are very culturally close to Denmark. To the point most young people leave the island because they can’t afford to live their. Most of them also go to college in Denmark.

The Faroese would generally fare a lot better as an independent country than Greenland. Greenland are still very dependant on Danish aid via block grants to run basic services. As a Dane, i wouldn't mind Greenlandic independence. They are kind of a deadweight

well according to the PROC's government and Taiwan(or rather the ROC)'s government and treatise between them China exist and is either Taiwan or the PROC. Therefore according to both of them neither of them are independent of eachother and instead are just in a civil war.

Depending on how things go in Ukraine, it is possible that some parts of Russia, particularly it's Republics, might break off as independent states, or in more regional confederations. Chechnya is one particular place considering numerous Chechen volunteers in the Ukrainian Army. The difficulty is of course being that Russia would (and does) violently stop any separatist movement, and any attempted beak away would for sure lead to the expansion of an already bloody conflict.

With Northern Ireland, it is worth STRONGLY to note that a large Independence Party doesn't necessarily mean the ones who voted for them want merger with RoI. As it is heavily infuenced from Swing Votes due to the DuP's fanatical stance over UK-EU treaties

Regardless of what the people of northern Ireland do or don't want changing in the status of the six counties from the UK to the ROI would need both governments to actually want that to happen and just avoiding the issue entirely seems to be the popular political stance in Dublin and Westminster.

Or even if UK let Scotland go first, would means UK should let NI reunited with ROI. Either option is like do it and you'll be struck to death by lighting, not doing it and you will be killed by volcano.

I think that you can probably push Scotland quite a bit further back following last year's (2022) UK Supreme Court ruling in London where Scotland failed to gain the support it was looking for to conduct a 2nd Independence referendum following the 2014 result which some people had trouble accepting. To add to their problems Nicola Sturgeon has left her position as First Minister and SNP leader to pass it on to Humza Yusef who doesn't really enjoy the same sort of support as Sturgeon or her predecessors once did, plus the rise of the Labour party across the UK once again is making things awkward for those who quite literally hate England.

The "supreme" court ruling was essentially that the Holyrood parliament is not sovereign so it has no constitutional powers THEREFORE it cannot organise an Independence referendum. The people of Scotland however ARE sovereign. By definition, this means there must be a mechanism for them to exercise this sovereignty. Given that the only other democratic mechanism for them to do so is an election to the sovereign Westminster parliament, expect the SNP to revert to its pre-devolution stance of putting the question of independence directly to the people when we next go to the polls in a Westminster election. If MPs are sovereign and are mandated by the electorate to terminate the 1707 Treaty of Union, that's what's going to go down.

As for "hating England", no. That's just a lazy way for people who don't understand the situation to dismiss it. For the record, my mother is English. That makes me half English. I don't hate my mother, myself or the rest of the English nation. Westminster and its malevolent rule? Yeah, I'll put my hand up to hating that, in common with millions of others across England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and beyond.

Somaliland should definitely be on this list. It virtually operates as it's own nation already. Others would be Bermuda, New Caledonia, and Kurdistan. I'd also expect Scotland to gain independence before Ireland became united.

Would love for all those oppressed nations that have gone through the worst under Russian rule to finally gain the freedom to walk their own paths away from the horrible Kremlin, giving how the Kremlin is taking away many of the devolved matters they gave to the ethnic republics including being able to learn their native languages on schools, hopefully Russia goes through more failures till the point it can't mess with all these ethnic groups more.
