That Japanese one is specifically for earthquakes. There are a bunch of other ones too for tsunamis, missiles, flooding, etc. I'd say the missile one is the scary sounding, but the earthquake one that gets automatically played from your phone at full volume when one happens is really annoying and catches you off guard (it's a different sound from the one in the video).

I'm surpised how you reacted towards Japan's earthquake alert. I'm from Japan and this sound is borderline traumatic. It's meant to alert people through music theory: the combination of tri-tone and half-step is supposed to grab your attention and take immediate action. This is crucial as people literally have to make split-second decisions to save their lives. I've been woken up to these sounds multiple times and it is honestly terrifying.

i'm not from japan, btu i find people's reactions to that alarm very...........? well, kind of dismissive of japan LOL like "oh it's just cutesy and kawaii like japan haha!" and it's like, no, it has a very obvious urgent sound to it. it's not meant to panic people.. i can imagine it being very effective. but i'm sorry you've had to hear it. :(

I'm sure it's all up to associating the sound with bad experiences. I'm not from Japan but have lived here many years and hearing that sound I feel nothing. However hearing the sound from my home country makes me nauseous because I just associate it with something BAD

I’m not from Japan, but I’ve always been a bit bothered when people dismiss the alarm as “the ice cream truck of doom”. Like, I get that it isn’t as immediately startling as, say, the US or Greece, but it still sounds urgent. And frankly, I think it accomplishes its job well-it keeps people calm but alert, which is vital for a densely-populated place that gets so many earthquakes and tsunamis. Wishing you the best from America!

We usually hear it for Amber Alerts but from time to time you'll get a tornado warning on it too. If you hear it as a tornado warning, you run to shelter, because they don't like using it unless they're very sure. Amber alerts are free game though, and can sometimes go off 4 times for the same kid. Ie, once for French and English and then when the child was found, in French and English. Also sometimes you get a provincial alert and then a city alert. Thing is that boomers hate it so much they tie up 911 trying to complain that their phone went off. 😂

I actually like the USA EAS alarm not because its kinda scary (grew up in texas I affiliate it with tornados and severe thunderstorm warnings) but because the way it works is actually really interesting it is the SAME Header alert system, and it works by turning on automatically and broadcasting. The first 3 Beeps are data dumps which give out a set of letters when unpacked. These letters are codes which when decoded give commands to 1. start the broadcast 2. what is being broadcasted 3. what counties or areas are being broadcasted 4. who sent out the broadcast (the government, EAS participant for testings, civil authorities like mayors, police, and fire department.) 5. purge time which is intervals when the broadcast is being broadcast like 15 minute broadcast intervals through an hour and then after that hour the broadcast is purged. 6. time of broadcast being sent out along with day since start of the year. this is repeated 3 times hence the 3 beeps the ending is called the tail which is the short 3 beeps at the thend which each send out 3 ns like NNN which signify the end of the broadcast and repeated 3 times so radios can automatically turn off and return to normal broadcasting. (the starting 3 beep meanings are not in ones are not in order cause I forgot)

For context Canadian alarms will force full volume on every single phone with a SIM card and power (the SIM doesn’t need to be in service just intact and in the phone). It happens frequently for things like amber alters and severe weather. It also often triggers in the middle of the night or very early in the morning. I don’t really think the recording of the Canadian alarm actually did it justice it felt a bit flat when it’s incredibly piercing. Despite hearing it almost once a month for my entire adult life I’m not used to it; It still strikes fear into me.

I love how arrhythmic the ones that have a rhythm to them can be, like they are causing you musical discomfort, just like the extreme dissonance in some of the sirens (which Norway nails). They make the notes or rhythms uncomfortable to listen to, because your brain wants harmony and rhythm. The German one repeats the last 2 notes too many times and made me notice that.

I gotta say my school's lockdown alert is pretty chilling "Attention staff and students. A hard lockdown has been put in place. Please move to a safe area" and then a minute of silence before that voice repeats the message. We did drills before and it never scared me. Then about two months ago we had a hard lockdown (not a drill) and seeing the panic in my teachers face... I'll never forget that. The alarm ended up being false, as some staff members have buttons on their lanyards and when both are pressed at the same time, it triggers the alarm. Turns out a teacher accidentally bumped theirs. Still scary when we didn't know it was an accident!

The thing is, I'm from Greece and I don't think I've heard this alarm before. It's usually a very much scarier you're gonna die in 3 2 1 kinda sound, 10/10 super effective

@@irenem7410 btw what you’re talking about is the civil protection alarm. The EAS i think is for much worse situations, like… an air raid or smth. Covid alarms aren’t EAS alarms

as a canadian, ours is just so unsettling that i’ve always gotten so much anxiety from hearing it. they use it mainly for amber alerts when there is kidnapping or children missing.

I grew up in germany and I've never heard an alarm in my life, a couple months ago I moved to the netherlands and I nearly got a heart attack when I heard their alarm for the first time, turns out they just test it every first sunday of the month 💀

I needed the TV to sleep as a kid so when the American alarm went off id wake up in a panic, curl up in a ball, shut my eyes, plugged my ears rlly hard, and just sat there in irritated fear. Then I'd just be up all night. Def S tier imo or one lower

The one from Japan is not to make people panic more then they have to. Japan is the most tectonically active country so they endure a lot of natural disasters and hazards so it has to be something not to scary so they don’t add to the fear. Also the ones that aren’t as scary become scarier when the message plays that something bad is about to happen, for instance; if there is a tsunami you hear the alarm then a person will give an announcement about what it is for and tell u to get to high land

Brazil's might not be scary, but just like Japan's,it is the SITUATION,Brazil is extremely safe on natural disasters so hearing one emergency broadcast is signifying something big is gonna happen.

The emergency earthquake alert sound was produced by NHK. Its concept was to create a sound that prompts vigilance against shaking, alerts to danger, and prompts immediate action, while being easily audible to people of all ages and those with hearing impairments. After various field experiments in places like train platforms and busy streets, this sound was chosen from around 20 sample sounds.
